Often, yes—but not automatically. Maine Coon cats have a well-known reputation for curiosity about water. An individual may scoop water with a paw, dunk a toy, chase a faucet stream, or even follow a person into the shower. That reputation describes a tendency, not a guarantee: some Maine Coons avoid getting wet, and a cat that enjoys playing with water may still dislike a bath or have no interest in swimming.

The useful question is not whether the breed is supposed to like water. It is what your cat chooses to do, how much contact it accepts, and whether it remains relaxed. Let that voluntary behavior guide you instead of testing the cat by placing it in a tub, pool, or shower.

What veterinary and breed sources actually say

VCA Animal Hospitals describes Maine Coons as cats that may scoop food and water with their paws, dunk toys in their bowls, and sometimes join a person in the shower. Those are breed-description observations, not a count of how many Maine Coons behave that way.

The International Cat Association (TICA) says Maine Coons commonly like water and describes their coat as water-resistant. A water-resistant coat can help droplets run off or slow soaking; it does not mean every cat enjoys immersion, bathing, or swimming.

PetMD’s article Are There Actually Cats That Like Water?, published October 22, 2018 and reviewed by Katie Grzyb, DVM, quotes certified cat behavior consultant Ingrid Johnson: “Johnson says that Maine Coons are especially known to like water, but she says it really depends on the cat.” Johnson and another behavior consultant connect a cat’s comfort with curiosity, past experiences, and gradual positive exposure.

No Maine Coon-specific study in these sources measures the percentage of cats that like water. Treat the breed reputation as a reported tendency and expert observation, not as a population statistic or a promise about your own pet.

Water interest comes in different forms

Owners often use likes water to describe several unrelated behaviors. Separating them prevents a playful cat from being pushed into an experience it does not want.

What you observe What it may mean Reasonable response
Watching, batting at, or pawing a moving stream Interest in movement, sound, or novelty; the cat may keep its body dry Offer a stable, shallow source and allow the cat to approach or leave
Scooping from a bowl or splashing the surface A familiar form of water play or a preferred way to drink Use a sturdy bowl on a washable mat and keep fresh water available
Dunking toys in the bowl Exploration or play; it does not prove the cat wants a bath Remove soaked or dirty toys and refresh the water
Stepping into or joining a shower voluntarily A high level of curiosity or comfort in that particular setting Keep the cat away from hot water, slippery footing, and strong spray
Being held under water or placed in a tub Handling imposed by a person, not evidence of water enjoyment Do not use forced immersion as a test

The same Maine Coon can show more than one pattern, and the pattern can change with the water source, noise, temperature, footing, and the cat’s previous experiences.

Why one Maine Coon may love water and another may avoid it

Temperament

Maine Coons are often described as curious, but curiosity is an individual trait. One cat may investigate every dripping tap while a littermate watches from a dry floor. A breed label cannot predict whether a particular cat will tolerate wet paws or a soaked coat.

Experience and learning

Behavior consultants cited by PetMD emphasize that experience matters. A cat that has encountered water gradually and without frightening handling may remain curious. A cat that was chased, restrained, startled by a spray, or slipped on a wet surface may learn to avoid it. You cannot reliably infer the earlier experience from the cat’s pedigree.

The setting

Moving water can be more interesting than still water, while a deep basin can feel threatening. A shower combines noise, spray, heat, and slick surfaces. A bowl on the floor presents a different set of sensations. If your cat likes one context, do not assume it will accept another.

The coat is not a behavioral guarantee

TICA’s description of a water-resistant coat explains why the breed is often associated with water, but coat structure and preference are separate issues. A cat may tolerate droplets on its outer fur yet object strongly when its body is submerged or its undercoat becomes heavy.

Do Maine Coon cats like baths?

Some may tolerate or investigate a bath, but the breed’s reputation does not establish that baths are enjoyable. Playing with a faucet, pawing a bowl, and accepting a full-body wash require different levels of contact. A bath also involves restraint, unfamiliar surfaces, and water reaching areas the cat cannot monitor.

If cleaning is medically necessary, follow your veterinarian’s instructions rather than using a voluntary water-play session as a substitute. The sources describe a general approach of gradual, positive exposure; they do not provide a Maine Coon-specific bathing protocol. Never hold a reluctant cat in water to see whether it will eventually accept the experience.

Do Maine Coon cats swim?

Water curiosity is not proof of swimming ability, safety, or willingness. The cited breed and behavior sources do not establish that Maine Coons are reliable swimmers, nor do they show that a cat that enters a shower would cope with a pool, pond, or open water. Treat every deep-water situation as a drowning risk and prevent unsupervised access.

Do not place a Maine Coon in a pool or other body of water for entertainment or breed testing. Even a calm cat can panic, become exhausted, or struggle to find an exit. A cat that chooses to wet its paws in a shallow, controlled area is expressing a preference for that moment—not granting permission for deeper water.

How to offer safe, voluntary water exploration

The safest approach is controlled choice. PetMD’s behavior guidance recommends allowing a cat to attempt the experience on its own and using gradual, positive exposure.

  1. Start with observation. Notice whether your cat approaches a bowl, faucet, or damp surface voluntarily. Do not carry the cat to the water or block its route away.
  2. Use a shallow, stable source. A low container that cannot tip gives the cat an option to touch the surface without committing its body. Place it on a non-slip, washable area.
  3. Keep the session quiet. Avoid loud spray, sudden movements, hot water, and crowded spaces. Let the cat control distance and duration.
  4. Stop at the first clear discomfort. If the cat retreats, resists, or tries to escape, end the interaction. Do not coax, restrain, or punish avoidance.
  5. Return control to the cat. Leave a dry route and a familiar resting place nearby. A successful session is one in which the cat can investigate and leave without being forced.
  6. Separate play from hygiene. Water exploration should not become an improvised bath. If grooming or treatment requires washing, ask your veterinarian for handling and product instructions.

This process is enrichment, not training for swimming. The goal is a calm choice, not a particular behavior.

Would a water fountain help?

A cat water fountain is optional enrichment, not a breed requirement. PetMD discusses fountains as a way to provide water-oriented play, and Cornell University’s Feline Health Center notes that some cats drink more from fountains while emphasizing that preferences vary.

Introduce a fountain as an additional choice rather than removing the bowl immediately. Keep it clean according to the manufacturer’s instructions, position it where the cat already feels secure, and watch whether the cat actually uses it. A fountain that produces noise, vibration, or a narrow stream may appeal to one cat and deter another. It cannot make a reluctant cat enjoy bathing, and it is not a treatment for dehydration.

Water play is different from hydration

A cat can splash constantly and still fail to drink enough, while another can ignore fountains and remain well hydrated. Cornell gives general guidance of about 4 ounces of water per 5 pounds of lean body weight per day. That is a general feline reference, not a Maine Coon-specific target, and wet food contributes water, so the amount a cat drinks from a bowl will vary with diet.

Monitor your cat’s overall intake and condition rather than judging hydration by playfulness around a tap. Cornell lists lethargy, weakness, poor appetite, dry mucous membranes, and, in more severe cases, sunken eyes as possible signs of dehydration. If you are concerned that your cat is dehydrated, you should contact a veterinarian promptly. A sudden change in drinking, urination, appetite, or energy also warrants veterinary advice, especially when several signs occur together.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the breed stereotype is a promise: reported water affinity does not predict every Maine Coon.
  • Equating pawing with bathing: a dry-paw game and full immersion are different experiences.
  • Forcing a demonstration: placing a cat in a tub, shower, pool, or pond can create fear and carries safety risks.
  • Using a fountain as a cure-all: some cats drink more from fountains, but individual preferences determine whether one helps.
  • Ignoring a health change: unusual thirst, reduced intake, lethargy, weakness, or poor appetite should be treated as a health question, not a personality quirk.

How to read your own cat’s answer

Look for a consistent pattern of voluntary approach, relaxed body language, and the ability to leave. A cat that repeatedly returns to a shallow stream, bowl, or fountain may be enjoying sensory enrichment. A cat that only tolerates water while being held is not demonstrating the same preference.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Record the context if you are unsure: which water source was present, whether the cat touched it or only watched, and whether the cat returned later without prompting. This observation helps you choose suitable enrichment without turning a harmless curiosity into a stressful handling exercise.

Maine Coons are legitimately associated with unusual interest in water, as described by VCA, TICA, and behavior experts quoted by PetMD. The individual cat remains the deciding factor. Offer safe choices, respect refusal, and contact a veterinarian when the issue is drinking or possible dehydration rather than simple play.
