Do mares make better polo ponies? What the evidence and buyers should consider

Mares are popular in polo, but research has not shown a general performance advantage. This guide explains the evidence and gives buyers a practical, welfare-focused way to evaluate any polo horse.

No. There is no reliable evidence that mares are better polo ponies than geldings or stallions as a group. Some breeders and players prefer mares because they believe mares are more agile or easier to train, but the 2024 review Health of Polo Horses describes that as a preference without scientific support. A sound choice comes from evaluating the individual horse’s speed, agility, courage, responsiveness, training, fitness, soundness and welfare—not using sex as a shortcut.

What “better” would have to mean in polo

A polo pony must perform repeated accelerations, abrupt turns, stops and changes of direction while staying responsive in close proximity to other horses, riders, mallets and a moving ball. The traditional word “pony” describes the sport horse rather than proving a particular height or sex advantage. Eligibility and administrative requirements can vary under national governing-body rules; the Federation of International Polo publishes international rules and procedures, while member associations apply their own regulations.

The Museum of Polo and Hall of Fame identifies speed, agility, courage, temperament and intelligence as qualities of an ideal polo pony. Those are performance attributes. Sex is not listed as a deciding quality, and no named statistic establishes that a particular sex wins more chukkas, reaches higher handicaps or remains sound longer.

What the polo-specific evidence actually says

The 2024 health review

Health of Polo Horses, a 2024 review available through PubMed Central, notes that some polo breeding and playing circles favor mares. The stated reasons are perceived trainability and agility. The review’s conclusion is explicit: “Although some sources emphasize the benefits of female horses in polo, there is no scientific evidence to support this.” That is a statement about the evidence base, not a claim that mares lack ability.

The review also warns against importing conclusions from other equestrian sports. Eventing, racing, dressage and polo impose different physical and behavioral demands, so a sex effect reported in one discipline cannot automatically be transferred to polo.

What broader equine behavior research contributes

A 2019 PLOS ONE paper, It’s all about the sex, or is it? Humans, horses and temperament, describes published research on equine sex and trainability as limited. Most studies it discusses found no difference in learning ability or training outcomes among mares, geldings and stallions, although results varied with the task and study design. This is useful context for resisting simple stereotypes, but it is not a direct comparison of polo-match performance.

A 2020 paper in Animals, Mares and Geldings: Sex-Related Stereotypes in Equestrianism, reports that mares are widely valued in professional polo circles while emphasizing that these preferences are largely anecdotal. It also cautions that sex-based expectations can change how a handler interprets and manages behavior. Calling a mare “difficult” or a gelding “reliable” before observing the individual can affect training decisions and the opportunities each horse receives.

What the workload study does—and does not—show

A 2021 study of a 16-goal tournament measured pony speeds, distances and movement patterns alongside players’ heart-rate responses. It documents how demanding high-level polo is, but it does not compare mares with geldings or stallions. Its numerical workload findings therefore cannot be used as evidence of a mare advantage.

Why the mare preference persists

Preferences can be real within a community without being proven performance rules. A breeder may have produced several successful mares, a player may have learned on one particularly responsive mare, or a stable’s management system may suit certain individuals. Those experiences can create a persuasive local tradition even when controlled comparisons are absent.

Historical writing shows how long such beliefs have circulated. The book record for Polo past and present includes the opinion, “Mares and fillies are better than geldings.” It is a historical assertion, not a measured comparison, and should be read as evidence of an old preference rather than a current finding.

Another reason the belief is hard to test is that polo horses are not a uniform population. They differ in breeding, previous work, age, conformation, conditioning, rider, training methods, playing position and level of competition. If a stable’s mares happen to be younger, better conditioned or more carefully selected than its geldings, the apparent sex effect may actually be a management or selection effect.

Selection area What to observe Questions to record
Speed and acceleration Willingness to move off the leg, gain speed promptly and repeat efforts without losing control Does the horse accelerate when asked and recover between efforts?
Agility and balance Controlled turns, stops, lateral movement and balance when the rider changes position Can it change direction under pressure without falling through a shoulder or rushing?
Courage Confidence near traffic, the ball, mallets, boards and sudden movement Does the horse stay attentive rather than freeze, bolt or crowd another horse?
Responsiveness and temperament Immediate, proportional reactions to aids, with enough composure for a busy field Can the rider slow or redirect the horse after an exciting play?
Intelligence and training Ability to learn patterns, retain lessons and generalize skills to new settings Does the horse improve with clear, consistent training?
Conditioning and workload fit Fitness appropriate to chukkas, tournament intensity, travel and recovery demands Can the horse meet the planned workload without persistent fatigue or soreness?
Health and welfare Soundness, veterinary status, appropriate tack, rest, nutrition and monitoring Is there a documented plan to prevent, identify and treat work-related problems?

Sex can be recorded as background information, but it should not replace any of these observations. A mare with poor balance is not a better choice because she is a mare; a gelding with excellent responses is not a poorer choice because he is a gelding.

A practical evaluation process for buyers and players

1. Define the job before viewing horses

Write down the level and format you actually play, the number and length of chukkas expected, travel requirements, playing position and the rider’s experience. A horse suited to a beginner’s controlled schooling sessions may not be prepared for a fast 16-goal tournament. Conversely, buying an extremely sharp horse for a novice can create a safety problem even if the horse is talented.

2. Gather a complete history

Ask for age, breeding, previous discipline, polo experience, current workload, injuries, medication, competition record and reason for sale. Request veterinary records rather than relying on a label such as “quiet mare” or “bombproof gelding.” The evidence on sex and trainability is too limited to justify those labels without observing the horse.

3. Watch the horse in its normal environment

Observe handling, tacking up, mounting, warm-up and recovery. Note whether behavior changes with a different rider, in a group or near the arena and field. Ask the current rider to demonstrate transitions, stops, turns and work near other horses before you ride.

4. Test polo-specific skills progressively

  1. Start in a quiet area and confirm basic steering, stopping and yielding to the aids.
  2. Add acceleration and deceleration, checking that the horse returns to a controllable pace.
  3. Introduce turns around markers and changes of direction on both reins.
  4. School near other horses at a safe distance, then gradually add normal polo traffic.
  5. Use a ball and mallet only when the horse remains attentive to the rider and surroundings.
  6. Repeat the evaluation on another day, ideally with the horse’s intended rider.

A single impressive run can hide poor recovery, anxiety or inconsistent responses. Repeated observations reveal whether the performance is a stable trait or a moment produced by a particular rider, environment or level of excitement.

5. Arrange an independent veterinary examination

Use a veterinarian who is not financially involved in the sale. The examination should be matched to the intended workload and include a discussion of previous injuries, current soundness, conditioning and any follow-up diagnostics the veterinarian considers appropriate. A purchase decision is also a welfare decision: the horse must be capable of the proposed work without avoidable pain or excessive fatigue.

6. Score evidence, not impressions

Create a simple record for each candidate. Rate the horse’s speed, agility, courage, responses, learning, fitness and soundness separately, and write the observation supporting each rating. If two horses are otherwise comparable, choose the one whose documented ability and welfare outlook best fit the job. Do not award extra points merely because one is a mare.

Managing expectations about mares, geldings and stallions

There is no scientifically established rule that mares are easier to train, geldings are calmer or stallions are more competitive in polo. Those descriptions may match an individual’s history, but they are not dependable substitutes for assessment. The 2019 and 2020 equine behavior literature is particularly relevant here: limited research, mixed findings and human stereotypes make broad predictions risky.

Handling plans should therefore be built around the horse in front of you. Use consistent cues, allow an appropriate conditioning progression and monitor changes in appetite, behavior, movement, recovery and willingness to work. If a horse becomes unusually reactive or reluctant, investigate pain, fatigue, tack, training and environment rather than attributing the change automatically to sex.

Welfare is part of performance selection

Polo’s rapid efforts and repeated matches make workload management essential. The 2021 tournament study illustrates the intensity of the activity without supplying a sex comparison. The New Zealand Polo Association states that owners remain responsible for pony welfare and describes monitoring by veterinary and welfare officials. In practice, a horse’s suitability includes the stable’s ability to provide appropriate rest, veterinary care, nutrition, transport and monitoring—not just its ability to make a fast play.

Plan recovery between sessions, keep records of workload and address soreness promptly. A horse that can produce spectacular speed for one chukka but cannot recover safely is not a better polo prospect. Selecting for sustainable work protects the animal and helps the player maintain reliable performance over a season.

Rules, terminology and local requirements

“Polo pony” is the sport’s traditional term; it does not by itself establish a sex-specific eligibility requirement. International competition operates through governing-body rules, and national or local associations may add administrative, veterinary or welfare requirements. Check the current rulebook for the association and tournament in which you plan to play before purchase, especially if the horse will cross borders or enter sanctioned competition.

Bottom line for a purchase decision

A mare can be an outstanding polo horse, but the evidence does not show that mares are better as a class. Choose the individual that demonstrates the required speed, agility, courage, responsiveness, intelligence, conditioning and soundness under fair testing, then support that ability with responsible welfare management. Treat sex as descriptive information, never as proof of performance.
