Northern resident killer whales off Vancouver Island repeatedly traveled and dived with Pacific white-sided dolphins while foraging for Chinook salmon. The observations support a striking possibility: orcas may listen to dolphins’ echolocation to help locate salmon. But the study did not show that dolphins deliberately scout for whales, or that either species gains a measurable net benefit.
What researchers observed
The field observations took place in August 2020 in the north island waters of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The animals were northern resident killer whales (Orcinus orca), Pacific white-sided dolphins (Lagenorhynchus obliquidens) and adult Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha). The study was published in Scientific Reports in December 2025. The study and UBC’s account describe the work.
Researchers combined drone footage from the Hakai Institute with temporary suction-cup biologging tags attached to killer whales. UBC reported that nine whales were tagged. The devices recorded video, sound and movement, including dives and feeding-related activity, and later detached. Comparing underwater records with aerial views helped the team relate animals’ positions to what was happening below the surface.
UBC reported 258 unique events in which dolphins traveled near the head of tagged killer whales. The whales were engaged in foraging-related behavior, including searching for, killing and eating salmon. Researchers saw whales orient toward dolphins and follow them to depth. A separate account by Science News counted 25 instances of killer whales following dolphins on deep dives over four observation days. That is a record of observed events during a short study, not a population-wide frequency or proof that every follow was a coordinated hunt.

How dolphins could help orcas find salmon
Dolphins use echolocation: they emit clicks and interpret returning echoes to detect objects around them. The authors propose that killer whales may listen to those signals and use them as cues while searching for Chinook salmon at depth. The paper also reports that killer whales reduced their own echolocation and rolled in the presence of dolphins—behaviors the authors interpret as consistent with listening to dolphin cues and scanning a broader area.
Calling dolphins “radar” scouts is a metaphor for this proposed acoustic mechanism, not a literal description. The evidence shows close association and whales following dolphins on dives; it does not establish that dolphins intentionally search for salmon on the whales’ behalf. The salmon in these observations were too large for dolphins to capture and swallow whole, while the killer whales caught and processed them.

What may benefit each species—and what remains uncertain
Video showed killer whales breaking salmon into pieces to share with other whales. Dolphins were present, and researchers observed them scavenging leftovers on one occasion. UBC also raised the possibility that staying near fish-eating resident killer whales could offer dolphins some protection from mammal-eating killer whales.
These observations suggest possible advantages, but they do not measure whether dolphins received more food or protection, or whether killer whales found more salmon, saved energy or improved their catch success. Senior author Andrew Trites described energy conservation and increased chances of finding salmon as a proposed benefit; it was not a measured result. The study therefore supports a hypothesis of cooperative foraging, not a demonstrated mutual-benefit arrangement.

How far the discovery can be generalized
The field record concerns one population, one location and an observation period in August 2020. UBC described the footage as the researchers’ first documented video evidence of this behavior for this population; that qualification does not establish that such interactions have never happened elsewhere. The authors call for more work to determine how widespread and consistent the behavior is.
For now, the most accurate answer to “Do orcas use dolphins to find salmon?” is: they may use dolphin echolocation cues, and researchers documented behavior consistent with that explanation. Whether dolphins are actively scouting, and whether the association reliably improves either species’ feeding or survival, remains unknown.
