Research on spider monkeys and chimpanzees supports dietary exposure; a separate captive experiment found that spider monkeys can detect and sometimes prefer low-ethanol options. None of these findings proves the “drunken monkey hypothesis” that alcohol-seeking explains human drinking.
What the wild spider-monkey study confirmed
A 2022 field study of free-ranging black-handed spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) on Barro Colorado Island, Panama, found naturally occurring ethanol in fruit the monkeys ate and alcohol metabolites in their urine. The researchers described this as the first demonstration of natural fruit-associated ethanol ingestion in a frugivorous primate. The study, published in Royal Society Open Science, establishes exposure—not intoxication or a preference for alcohol.
Researchers also tested pulp from fruit that monkeys had partly eaten and dropped. Ethanol was typically around 1–2% in those samples, but its concentration was not significantly related to how much fruit had been eaten. That result does not show the monkeys selected fruit because it contained ethanol. UC Berkeley’s account of the study likewise cautions that the finding is one piece of evidence, not a settled evolutionary explanation.
Can monkeys taste or prefer ethanol?
A different study addressed taste, not wild foraging. In 2019, researchers ran short two-bottle preference trials with eight captive spider monkeys. The monkeys could detect ethanol at concentrations as low as 0.5% and preferred tested concentrations up to 3% over water. In comparisons with sugar solutions or fruit purée, they sometimes chose ethanol-spiked options over equal-sugar alternatives. But when an ethanol-free option was sweeter and supplied more sugar, they preferred it—even when the ethanol mixture contained three times as many calories. Linköping University’s summary of the experiment reports that sweetness mattered alongside ethanol taste; the results do not show that monkeys seek alcohol for its calories or establish why humans drink.

What chimpanzee fruit measurements suggest
A 2025 study reported by UC Berkeley measured ethanol in 21 fruit species sampled at chimpanzee study sites in Ngogo, Uganda, and Taï, Côte d’Ivoire. The sampled fruits averaged 0.26% ethanol by weight overall. Weighted by the estimated share of each species in chimpanzees’ diets, the averages were 0.32% at Ngogo and 0.31% at Taï. UC Berkeley’s report on the study explains that the researchers combined fruit measurements with an estimate that chimpanzees eat about 4.5 kilograms of fruit per day.
On that basis, the researchers estimated that chimpanzees consume about 14 grams of ethanol a day—roughly one U.S. standard drink by absolute ethanol amount, or nearly two drinks after adjusting for chimpanzee versus human body mass. This is a modeled dietary estimate, not a direct measurement of each chimpanzee’s daily intake. The study did not establish that chimpanzees choose fruit for its ethanol. Berkeley’s account says the animals show no overt signs of intoxication during this distributed feeding.

Does eating fallen fruit explain the hypothesis?
A 2025 BioScience paper uses “scrumping” for gathering, or sometimes stealing, windfallen fruit. Its review of dietary observations found regular ground-level fruit feeding among African apes; orangutans did not show the same pattern in the reviewed data. The authors suggest that the ability to metabolize ethanol may have helped African apes use fallen ripe fruit, but they note that ethanol exposure from scrumped fruit remains largely unknown and needs direct measurement. The paper links a plausible evolutionary idea to a question still awaiting direct evidence.

The hypothesis proposes that attraction to ripe fruit, and the ability to use fruit with naturally occurring ethanol, may have shaped primate evolution and help explain human interest in alcohol. The available findings support parts of that picture: some wild primates ingest ethanol in fruit, spider monkeys respond to ethanol taste in a captive test, and chimpanzees’ estimated fruit diets expose them to measurable amounts.

Those findings do not demonstrate that primates deliberately seek ethanol, become drunk from fruit, or that natural selection for fermented-fruit consumption caused human drinking or alcohol misuse. Exposure, taste preference, intoxication, and evolutionary causation are separate claims; the studies have not established the latter two. As UC Berkeley’s 2025 report notes, chimpanzees could reach the modeled average even if they sample ripe fruit without an ethanol preference.
