Loncovilius carlsbergi is a South American rove beetle whose male reproductive organ resembles a bottle opener. The species was formally described in a taxonomic revision—not discovered opening bottles—and its name honors Carlsberg. The shape’s evolutionary purpose is unknown.
What is the bottle-opener beetle?
Loncovilius carlsbergi is one of six species newly described in a peer-reviewed revision of the South American rove beetle genus Loncovilius. The study recognized ten valid species in the genus. Researchers based the revision on examination of specimens, including museum material, rather than on observing the beetles using bottles or openers. The taxonomic paper was published online on 28 October 2023 in the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society; its journal issue is dated 2024.
The beetle’s common-news description refers to the male’s aedeagus, a reproductive organ. Its shape is useful as a visual comparison, not evidence of a known function: the researchers said they do not know why it evolved that way.
Why is it named after Carlsberg?
The species epithet carlsbergi honors Carlsberg. The University of Copenhagen’s 13 November 2023 announcement linked the choice both to the organ’s bottle-opener-like shape and to the Carlsberg Foundation’s support for independent research. The name is not a claim that the beetle has any relationship to beer or bottle-opening behavior.

In the announcement, researcher Aslak Kappel Hansen explained that insect genitalia often differ between species and can therefore help identify them. That taxonomic role—not an observed bottle-opening activity—is the scientific context for the memorable comparison.
Where was the beetle found?
The taxonomic paper records L. carlsbergi from Chile’s Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica Region, in lowland Magellanic subpolar forest ecoregions. It does not state how the specimen was collected, so a specific field encounter or collection technique should not be inferred.

The university describes Loncovilius beetles generally as about one centimetre long and occurring in Chile and Argentina. It also notes sticky bristles on their legs; the researchers proposed that these may help the beetles climb flowers and vegetation. That suggested role is a hypothesis about the genus, not confirmed behavior for L. carlsbergi.
Can you buy the bottle opener?
The University of Copenhagen reported in 2023 that researchers had a stainless-steel model made and were working to put the opener into production. That announcement does not establish that it is currently available for purchase. No retail availability is confirmed in the cited sources.
How was the species recognized?
The revision combined phylogenetic analysis with taxonomic examination to reassess the genus. It concluded that Loncovilius comprises ten valid species, six of them described as new and restricted to the southern Andean region. The Copenhagen announcement says specimens had been held for decades in the Natural History Museum of Denmark and other insect collections before the researchers studied them.
