Do Rabbits Like Cold Weather? Winter Temperature Facts and Safe-Care Guide

Rabbits can handle cool conditions only when they are healthy, acclimated and protected from damp, wind and temperature extremes. Here is how to house and monitor them safely in winter.

Rabbits can cope with cool weather, but “liking” the cold is not the right safety test. A healthy, acclimated rabbit may remain comfortable when its enclosure is dry, sheltered, draught-free and well ventilated. Cold combined with damp bedding, wind, frozen water or sudden temperature changes can become dangerous.

The RSPCA gives 10–20°C as an ideal environmental range for domestic rabbits and advises considering a protected indoor location as temperatures reach freezing. That is welfare guidance, not a universal cold threshold: the rabbit’s age, health, coat, acclimation and housing all change the risk.

What “liking cold weather” means for a rabbit

Rabbits do not choose weather in the way people choose a season. Their comfort depends on whether they can stay dry, avoid persistent draughts, regulate body heat and continue normal eating, movement and social behaviour. A rabbit living outdoors through gradually cooling weather can develop a thicker winter coat and acclimate to the conditions. The same temperature may be unsafe for an indoor rabbit that has not developed that coat, or for an animal that is thin, elderly, young or ill.

Cool, dry air is therefore different from cold, wet exposure. Rain, sleet, snow that blows into the sleeping area and damp bedding remove insulation and chill the body. Wind increases heat loss even when a thermometer reading does not look extreme. Merck Veterinary Manual cautions that outdoor rabbits can be vulnerable to frostbite during temperature extremes.

Rabbits also do not hibernate. They should continue their ordinary routine of eating, exercising, receiving health checks and interacting with companions. The RSPCA summarises this directly: “Rabbits don’t hibernate, so will need to stick to their usual routines of daily exercise, regular food times, clean housing, frequent checkups and socialisation.”

How temperature, shelter and acclimation change the answer

Situation What it means for comfort and risk Action
Cool weather, dry shelter and a healthy acclimated adult Often manageable when the rabbit can retreat to a protected sleeping area and remains active and eating. Maintain dry bedding, hay, water, ventilation and daily checks.
Cold with rain, snow, sleet or wet bedding Moisture destroys the insulating value of bedding and can freeze; draughts add heat loss. Move the sleeping area out of prevailing weather, replace wet material promptly and block direct draughts without sealing ventilation.
Temperatures approaching freezing The RSPCA advises considering a protected indoor location. Individual tolerance still varies. Plan a sheltered space before freezing conditions arrive and ask a vet about vulnerable rabbits.
Extreme cold Frostbite and cold stress become more likely, particularly outdoors. Use a genuinely protected, dry, ventilated building and obtain veterinary advice for any rabbit that is not thriving.
Indoor rabbit placed outside in very cold weather An indoor rabbit may not have grown a sufficiently thick winter coat and may not be acclimated. Do not make a sudden move outdoors; discuss a gradual, safe plan with a rabbit-experienced vet.
Young, thin, older, sick or incompletely acclimated rabbit Less body reserve or reduced ability to regulate temperature increases concern. Provide extra monitoring and veterinary advice rather than relying on a thermometer alone.

Winter housing: build a dry, protected microclimate

Outdoor accommodation should be secure, waterproof, dry, sheltered from prevailing wind and designed to allow fresh air. Ventilation matters because a closed, damp hutch can produce condensation and respiratory problems; protection from draughts means preventing a continuous blast at the rabbit’s resting place, not blocking every air opening.

Position the sleeping area

Place the enclosed sleeping compartment away from the direction of rain, snow and wind. Check it after bad weather rather than assuming the roof or cover kept it dry. A hutch cover can help shield the structure, but it is not a substitute for ventilation or inspection. The run should remain secure and large enough for normal movement, with a dry route between exercise and sleeping areas.

Use hay and bedding safely

Provide plentiful dry hay for eating and for nesting or sleeping. Hay that becomes damp or mouldy should be discarded, not dried and returned. Remove wet bedding as soon as you find it because it can freeze and leave the rabbit lying against a cold surface. Replace it with clean, dry, rabbit-safe material.

Do not put a loose blanket in a rabbit’s enclosure. A rabbit that chews fabric can swallow fibres, and the RSPCA warns this may cause an intestinal blockage. If additional insulation is needed, improve the building and sleeping compartment from outside the rabbit’s reach.

Protect food and water

Check drinking water frequently during freezing weather. A bottle cover is an optional aid mentioned by the RSPCA, but it does not eliminate the need to test the water and drinking mechanism. Ice can form inside a bottle or bowl even when the outside appears usable. Replace frozen water promptly and make sure food is not frozen or frosty.

A daily cold-weather care routine

Winter care works best as a repeatable inspection rather than a one-time preparation. Use this sequence whenever temperatures are low or severe weather is forecast:

  1. Check the rabbit first. Confirm that it is alert, moving normally, eating and producing its usual droppings. Look for wet fur, especially around the body and feet.
  2. Inspect the sleeping compartment. Feel the bedding and floor for dampness, look for leaks and check that wind-driven precipitation has not entered.
  3. Replace compromised bedding and hay. Remove anything wet, frozen or mouldy and refill with dry material.
  4. Test water physically. Confirm that water flows from a bottle or is free of ice in a bowl; do not rely on an external temperature reading.
  5. Offer the usual diet. Do not withhold food because it is cold. Keep the normal feeding schedule and ensure hay remains available.
  6. Provide exercise and companionship. Preserve the rabbit’s normal opportunity to move and interact with compatible companions. Cold weather does not remove these needs.
  7. Recheck after precipitation or a temperature drop. A dry enclosure at breakfast can become wet or frozen later in the day.

Keep written notes if a rabbit is recovering from illness or surgery. Changes in appetite, activity or droppings are easier to spot when compared with that animal’s normal pattern.

Moving rabbits during severe weather

If snow, freezing conditions or a damaged hutch make the usual location unsafe, the RSPCA identifies a shed, outhouse or unused garage as possible protected spaces. The area must still be dry, secure and well ventilated, with no exposure to vehicle fumes, chemicals or predators. Avoid greenhouses: they can become dangerously hot when sunlight returns, even after a cold night.

Keep rabbits away from direct heat sources and electrical wires. Portable heaters can burn a rabbit, dry the air unevenly or create a fire and chewing hazard. Improve insulation and eliminate draughts instead of placing the animal directly beside a heater.

Moving an outdoor rabbit into a heated home for only a short spell can create a difficult temperature transition. If a move indoors is necessary, choose a stable, suitable room and ask a veterinarian how to manage the change. Do not repeatedly shuttle the rabbit between a warm house and freezing outdoor conditions.

Which rabbits need extra protection?

Indoor rabbits

An indoor rabbit is not automatically safer outside in winter. RSPCA guidance specifically cautions against putting an indoor rabbit outdoors when it is very cold because its winter coat may not be as thick. Indoor housing should remain comfortable and free from cold draughts; outdoor time should be considered only when the rabbit is appropriately acclimated and conditions are suitable.

Young, thin and older rabbits

These rabbits may have less body reserve or less ability to maintain temperature. Inspect them more often and discuss shelter, bedding and acceptable temperature changes with a vet. A thin rabbit may also have an underlying health problem, so adding insulation should not replace a medical assessment.

Unwell rabbits and rabbits after surgery

Illness, medication and recovery can change how a rabbit handles cold. For an animal receiving treatment or recovering from surgery, ask the treating veterinarian whether indoor housing, a particular temperature range or restricted exercise is appropriate. Do not make a housing change based only on a general winter checklist.

Cold stress is not hibernation

A rabbit that is unusually quiet may be sick rather than sleepy because of the weather. The RSPCA states that a rabbit appearing “lethargic, sleepy or limp” may have an illness or emergency and that you should contact a vet immediately. Treat those signs as urgent, especially when accompanied by refusal to eat, abnormal breathing, collapse, a very cold body, wet fur or a sudden change in droppings.

Do not wait for a rabbit to “warm up” if it is limp or unresponsive, and do not force food or water into a weak animal. Place it somewhere safe while contacting a veterinarian and follow the clinic’s instructions about transport and warming. A rabbit that is alert but has a persistent change in appetite or behaviour also needs prompt veterinary advice.

Products that can help—and what they cannot do

Some supplies make winter maintenance easier, but none guarantees safety in extreme weather. Suitable categories include:

  • Rabbit hay for winter bedding: keep enough dry hay available for eating and resting; discard any that is damp or mouldy.
  • A weatherproof hutch cover: use it to reduce exposure to rain and wind while leaving adequate ventilation.
  • Rabbit-safe bedding: choose clean, dry material that the rabbit cannot easily ingest in dangerous quantities, and replace it when wet.
  • A water-bottle cover: this may slow freezing, but water still needs regular physical checks.

Inspect every item for chewing damage and keep products away from electrical cables. The enclosure’s design, daily care and the rabbit’s condition matter more than any single accessory.

A practical decision framework for cold days

Use the following questions before leaving a rabbit outdoors:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Is the rabbit healthy, eating, active and already acclimated to the current outdoor conditions?
  • Is the sleeping area dry after recent rain or snow?
  • Can the rabbit escape prevailing wind while still receiving fresh air?
  • Are hay and bedding dry, and is drinking water definitely liquid?
  • Can the rabbit exercise and maintain social contact as usual?
  • Is the forecast approaching freezing or an unusually severe temperature?
  • Is the rabbit indoor-only, young, thin, elderly, ill or recovering from surgery?

If the answer to the housing questions is no, correct the enclosure before exposure continues. If the concern is the rabbit’s health, age, acclimation or treatment, call a veterinarian. The RSPCA’s 10–20°C ideal range is a useful welfare reference, but it should not be treated as permission to keep every rabbit outside below or above a particular number.

What the veterinary guidance establishes

The RSPCA’s winter-care guidance supplies the 10–20°C ideal environmental range, recommends considering protected indoor housing as temperatures reach freezing, and sets out practical requirements for dry bedding, hay, water, exercise and socialisation. The Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund likewise emphasises the importance of suitable outdoor housing and companion care. Merck Veterinary Manual’s housing references describe climate-dependent housing and ventilation and warn about frostbite risk during temperature extremes; its “Providing a Home for a Rabbit” review was updated in July 2026.

These sources do not establish a single temperature at which every rabbit becomes unsafe, nor do they provide a population statistic for cold tolerance. That is why the safest answer combines the thermometer reading with shelter quality, acclimation and the individual rabbit’s health.
