Do shrimp clean fish tanks? They can graze on algae, biofilm, and some decaying material, but they do not keep a tank clean or safe on their own. Shrimp are scavengers that contribute to nutrient cycling; aquarium owners still need to manage water quality and routine care.

What freshwater shrimp eat—and what that means for a tank

Cherry shrimp (Neocaridina davidi) are freshwater ornamental shrimp originally from Taiwan and traded for aquariums in other countries. “Cherry” refers to the red color morph; other color morphs are also known. The University of Florida IFAS Extension describes ornamental shrimp as “detritivores and opportunistic feeders” that graze on algae, biofilms, and dead plants and animals. UF/IFAS species profile

In their natural setting, cherry shrimp spend much of their time grazing on biofilms on leaf litter. By feeding on decaying vegetation, they help recycle nutrients. In an aquarium, this grazing can make them useful inhabitants, but it is not a guarantee that visible algae or other waste will disappear. The source describes feeding behavior and ecological contribution; it does not establish a particular level of algae removal in a home tank.

What shrimp grazing does not do

Grazing is not the same as water treatment. Shrimp should not be expected to consume all fish waste, prevent algae problems, correct poor water quality, or replace water changes and other routine maintenance. Waste can build up in a confined aquarium to levels that seriously harm or kill its inhabitants; a NOAA-hosted marine aquarium guide discusses this general risk and the role of bacteria and algae in natural waste processing. • Think of shrimp as contributors to grazing and scavenging, not as a cleanup crew that makes maintenance unnecessary.
  • Do not use their presence or activity as evidence that aquarium water is safe.
  • Keep feeding behavior separate from claims about controlling disease or maintaining water parameters.

Freshwater shrimp and marine “cleaner shrimp” are different

The phrase “cleaner shrimp” can refer to marine species associated with cleaning interactions or studied for parasite control. That is not the same role as a freshwater cherry shrimp grazing on algae and biofilm. The term itself is used inconsistently: a 2017 review estimated 51 cleaner shrimp species across 11 genera and six families, while noting that evidence for some cleaning interactions has been limited. Vaughan and colleagues’ 2017 review

Type Environment and described role What the evidence supports
Cherry shrimp (Neocaridina davidi) Freshwater; grazes on algae, biofilm, and decaying plant and animal material. UF/IFAS describes its feeding behavior and nutrient-recycling contribution; it does not establish a guaranteed aquarium-cleaning result. UF/IFAS species profile
Marine cleaner shrimp Saltwater; species may be scavengers or participate in cleaning interactions. Reef compatibility varies. UF/IFAS describes marine cleaner shrimp as carnivorous scavengers and cautions that not all types are reef-safe. UF/IFAS marine aquarium guide
Marine shrimp studied for parasite control Controlled aquaculture systems; researchers tested four marine shrimp species against specified fish parasites. The 2018 study reported results that depended on shrimp species and treatment time and called for further research. It is not evidence that freshwater cherry shrimp treat fish disease. What to consider before adding shrimp

First decide whether the aquarium is freshwater or marine and whether the shrimp’s documented feeding behavior suits your purpose. Do not treat marine cleaner-crew advice as a complete care guide for freshwater shrimp: the UF/IFAS guidance is for saltwater aquariums. It advises adding its marine cleaner crew only after the nitrogen cycle is complete and notes that the animals depend on food available in the aquarium. Those are useful general cautions, not freshwater setup specifications. UF/IFAS marine aquarium guide
