Several tropical fish have elongated snouts, but they are not one closely related group. Look for longnose butterflyfish, forcepsfish, trumpetfish, pipefish, and copperband butterflyfish. Their snouts help them reach or capture small prey in different ways.
How to recognize fish with long snouts
A long snout is a visible body feature, not a taxonomic category. The fish below belong to different groups, and their snouts range from narrow, forceps-like jaws to tubular mouths. Shape, body form, and feeding behavior are more useful for identification than snout length alone.

Longnose butterflyfish and forcepsfish
The longnose butterflyfish (Forcipiger longirostris) and forcepsfish (Forcipiger flavissimus, also called the forceps butterflyfish) look similar, but they are distinct species. Both occur on coral reefs in the Indo-Pacific and probe coral branches and crevices for small invertebrates.

Compared with the forcepsfish, it has a longer snout, a smaller mouth gape, and 10–11 rather than 12–13 dorsal-fin spines. Rows of small black spots on its chest are another identifying feature. Their different mouth shapes suit different prey. Waikīkī Aquarium says, “The longnose butterflyfish takes its small prey, largely crustaceans, whole.” The forcepsfish’s wider gape lets it tear larger prey, including worm tentacles and sea-urchin tube feet. Trumpetfish
The trumpetfish (Aulostomus chinensis) has a long, slender body and a tubular snout with a small mouth. The Australian Museum lists a size of up to 80 cm and a range across the Indo-Pacific and eastern Pacific. It hunts small fish using stealth and camouflage, sometimes approaching vertically before sucking prey into its snout. Australian Museum species profile, updated November 24, 2018.

The Florida Museum of Natural History describes its distinctive mouth this way: “The snout is very long with a trumpet-like mouth.” It also notes that trumpetfish often swim vertically near reefs, snouts down, blending with sea fans, pipe sponges, and sea whips. Pipefish
Pipefish are seahorse relatives with long snouts and small, tube-like mouths. The group includes species found in tropical as well as temperate waters. Seattle Aquarium describes their food as including tiny crustaceans, fish, fish eggs, and zooplankton. Because “pipefish” refers to a group rather than one species, identification to species requires more than the long snout alone. Seattle Aquarium’s pipefish overview.

Copperband butterflyfish
The copperband butterflyfish (Chelmon rostratus) is a Western Pacific species with a long snout used to find and extract tiny invertebrates from narrow spaces. Georgia Aquarium reports a maximum length of 20 cm. Its profile also describes it as difficult to keep in a home aquarium, so its striking appearance should not be taken as a sign that it is an easy fish for a beginner.
