Do Tortoises Need Water? How to Set Up Drinking and Soaking Safely

Tortoises need regular access to fresh water. Set up a shallow, stable dish no deeper than chin height, clean it daily, and treat soaking as species- and age-specific husbandry—not a replacement for drinking water or veterinary care.

Yes. Tortoises need regular access to fresh drinking water. Keep a shallow, stable dish where the tortoise can reach it, and replace the water with fresh water every day. The same dish can often provide a place to soak, but soaking is an additional husbandry option—not a universal substitute for drinking or a treatment for illness. The correct routine depends on species, age, enclosure conditions and individual health.

What “regular access” means in practice

A tortoise may drink in captivity as well as in the wild. Tortoise Trust’s basic-care guidance recommends offering fresh water daily and warns against assuming that food alone supplies everything the animal needs. A practical setup is a dish that remains available in the enclosure during the animal’s normal active period, with the water changed at least daily and whenever it becomes soiled.

There is no single volume of water that fits every tortoise. Body size, species, age, temperature, humidity, diet and enclosure design all affect use. Instead of trying to measure a quota, make water easy to find and physically safe to use, then monitor the dish and the animal’s routine. Species-specific veterinary or specialist advice should take priority over a generic schedule.

Why a tortoise needs both drinking water and a safe soaking option

Drinking is a normal behavior

Captive tortoises still drink. Fresh water should therefore be part of the enclosure’s routine care, not an occasional extra offered only when the tortoise looks thirsty. A tortoise that eats moisture-containing foods may still need a separate drinking source; do not use food as a reason to remove the dish.

Soaking can offer another opportunity

A shallow dish can be large enough for a tortoise to climb into and soak while remaining shallow enough to avoid drowning. This gives the animal an opportunity to use water in a way that is separate from drinking. It does not prove that the tortoise has consumed enough water, and it does not replace a clean drinking supply.

Dehydration needs professional attention

Tortoise Trust’s dehydration guidance recommends fresh drinking water as prevention and prompt veterinary treatment when dehydration is suspected. General soaking instructions are not an illness-treatment plan. A reptile-experienced veterinarian can assess the animal and decide whether fluid therapy, testing or other treatment is needed; delaying care can allow serious secondary renal damage.

Choosing a water dish

The International Turtle & Tortoise Authority describes a suitable dish as shallow and sturdy: deep enough to drink from and large enough to climb into and soak, but not deep enough to drown in. It specifies that the waterline should be no higher than the tortoise’s chin when the animal is standing. Apply that measurement to the individual tortoise, not to a label such as “juvenile” or “adult,” because body proportions and dish design vary.

Selection criterion What to check Why it matters
Water depth With the tortoise standing normally, keep the water no higher than chin level. Allows drinking and shallow soaking while limiting drowning risk.
Stability Use a broad, heavy dish that does not tip when the tortoise steps on its rim. A tipped dish can remove access to water and wet or destabilize the enclosure.
Entry and exit Choose a low, gently sloped entry that the tortoise can negotiate without scrambling. The animal must be able to reach the water and leave it independently.
Cleaning Select a smooth, accessible surface that can be emptied and scrubbed every day. Daily cleaning is easier when residue and debris cannot collect in crevices.
Location Place it where the tortoise can find it and where it will not be buried by substrate; desert-tortoise guidance specifies shade. Stable placement preserves access and helps keep the water usable.
Species fit Check the enclosure and dish against species-specific care instructions. General guidance does not establish one design for every tortoise.

How to set up drinking water step by step

  1. Identify the tortoise’s standing height. Observe the animal standing normally, then set the maximum waterline at or below chin height. Recheck after changing the dish or as the tortoise grows.
  2. Prepare a shallow, sturdy container. It should resist tipping and have an entry and exit the tortoise can use without assistance. Avoid a container whose sides are too steep for the animal to climb out.
  3. Position it on a firm surface. Keep the dish level and accessible. If loose substrate repeatedly falls into it, move it to a firmer area or use a stable base that does not raise the waterline unsafely.
  4. Fill with clean water. Provide enough for drinking and, where appropriate, a shallow soak, while maintaining the chin-height limit. Do not add medication, vitamins, soap or disinfectant to the drinking water unless a veterinarian has specifically prescribed it.
  5. Make it easy to locate. Keep the dish in the enclosure where the tortoise can reach it during its normal activity. Do not hide it behind an object or place it where heat, traffic or enclosure furnishings make access difficult.
  6. Refresh it every day. Empty, clean and refill the dish daily. Replace the water sooner if it contains substrate, feces, food or other debris.
  7. Reassess after any enclosure change. A new substrate, hide, basking arrangement or larger tortoise can alter access. Confirm that the dish remains level, stable and within the safe depth.

Soaking: useful, but not one-size-fits-all

Soaking recommendations differ by source, species and age. Tortoise Trust’s FAQ presents age-based schedules and specifies lukewarm, shallow water. The International Turtle & Tortoise Authority separately recommends regular warm, shallow soaks for hatchlings and juveniles. These statements support offering appropriate opportunities, not imposing one precise timetable on every tortoise.

Hatchlings and juveniles

Young tortoises are commonly given regular warm, shallow soaking opportunities in the International Turtle & Tortoise Authority’s guidance. The exact frequency and duration should come from care instructions for the species and from a veterinarian or specialist familiar with that age group. A schedule written for one species should not automatically be transferred to another.

Adults

Adult soaking needs are also species-dependent. Some care plans include periodic shallow soaks; others place more emphasis on continuous access to a safe dish and the enclosure’s environmental conditions. Follow the plan for your tortoise rather than treating an adult schedule found elsewhere as universal.

Safe soaking procedure

  1. Use a separate clean container or a dish that can be thoroughly cleaned before it returns to drinking use.
  2. Add lukewarm or warm, shallow water at a level that remains below the tortoise’s chin when standing.
  3. Place the tortoise in a stable position with an easy way to keep its head above water and an easy route out.
  4. Remain attentive throughout the soak and stop if the tortoise shows distress. Do not force the head under water or add products that were not prescribed.
  5. Afterward, return the tortoise to its correctly prepared enclosure and discard the used water. Clean and dry the container before its next use.

A soak can be a husbandry opportunity; it is not proof that drinking water is unnecessary. Conversely, a tortoise drinking from its dish does not mean every scheduled soak is appropriate. Keep those decisions separate.

Species and age differences you should not ignore

Situation Supported guidance How to apply it cautiously
General captive care Tortoise Trust recommends fresh water daily and recognizes drinking in captivity. Maintain a clean, accessible supply and do not rely on food alone.
Desert tortoise The California Turtle & Tortoise Club specifies a shallow drinking-and-soaking dish, daily cleaning and a shaded location. Keep these instructions specific to desert tortoise care; do not extend every detail automatically to other species.
Hatchling or juvenile The International Turtle & Tortoise Authority recommends regular warm, shallow soaks. Use species- and age-specific instructions for the actual frequency.
Any tortoise suspected to be dehydrated or ill Tortoise Trust advises access to fresh water and prompt veterinary treatment. Do not attempt to manage illness with a generic soaking schedule.

Daily water-dish maintenance

Water hygiene is part of providing water. A dish that is technically full but contaminated is not a dependable drinking source. Build the following checks into the enclosure routine:

  • Confirm that the dish is upright, reachable and not covered by substrate.
  • Check the waterline against the tortoise’s standing chin height after refilling.
  • Empty and clean the dish every day; the California Turtle & Tortoise Club explicitly calls for daily cleaning for desert tortoises.
  • Replace water immediately after visible contamination rather than waiting for the next scheduled change.
  • Keep a desert tortoise’s dish in shade, as specified by that care sheet.
  • Inspect the rim and base for cracks, sharp edges or instability before reuse.

Cleaning frequency and placement can be species-specific, but the practical goal is the same: water that remains accessible, shallow and clean.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Removing the dish because the tortoise does not appear to drink

Visible drinking is not a reliable reason to withhold water. Leave a safe source available and continue daily refreshes. If you are concerned about how much the tortoise is drinking, ask a reptile-experienced veterinarian rather than guessing from the dish level.

Making the dish too deep

A decorative bowl can be unsafe if its depth exceeds chin height or its sides prevent escape. Replace it with a shallow, stable design and verify the waterline while the tortoise is standing.

Using one soaking timetable for every tortoise

Schedules differ between sources and by age. Treat a timetable as part of a species-specific care plan, not as a universal rule.

Leaving a dirty dish in place

Food, feces and substrate can contaminate water. Empty and clean the dish daily, and change the water sooner whenever it becomes dirty.

Using soaking as emergency treatment

Soaking alone cannot diagnose or correct dehydration-related illness. If dehydration is suspected, contact a veterinarian experienced with reptiles promptly; Tortoise Trust notes that early treatment can help prevent serious secondary renal damage.

When to contact a veterinarian

Seek professional advice if you suspect dehydration, if the tortoise is unwell, or if you are unsure whether its species, age or enclosure requires a particular soaking routine. Choose a veterinarian experienced with reptiles. Bring details of the enclosure, water setup, recent cleaning routine and any soaking schedule so the clinician can evaluate the whole husbandry plan rather than treating water access in isolation.

Do not wait for a generic care article to resolve a possible medical problem. Fresh water is a preventive husbandry measure; suspected illness requires an individualized assessment.

A simple decision checklist

  • Can the tortoise reach water? Keep a shallow, stable dish in the enclosure.
  • Is the depth safe? Keep the waterline no higher than chin height while standing.
  • Is the water fresh? Replace it daily and sooner when contaminated.
  • Can the tortoise enter and exit? Use a low, stable design with no steep walls.
  • Does the species have special instructions? Apply desert-tortoise, Mediterranean, hatchling or juvenile guidance only where it actually fits.
  • Are you considering a soak? Use lukewarm or warm, shallow water and follow a species- and age-specific plan.
  • Could the tortoise be ill or dehydrated? Contact a reptile-experienced veterinarian instead of using soaking as a substitute for treatment.
