The decision involves ending a life, assessing suffering, guiding a devastated owner, and accepting responsibility for an irreversible outcome. However, veterinarians do not all react in the same way. Some may cry, some may remain composed, and some may feel relief that suffering has ended alongside sadness. A calm, professional manner is not evidence that a veterinarian does not care.
Findings from veterinary professionals and bereaved clients show that the emotional burden often comes as much from the decision conversation and the owner’s grief as from the euthanasia procedure itself. Those findings were not designed to measure feelings about cats specifically in every case, so their results should be understood as evidence about veterinary work more broadly.

Why euthanizing a cat can be emotionally difficult for a veterinarian
Euthanasia is intended to prevent further suffering, but it still requires a veterinarian to authorize and carry out an animal’s death. The American Veterinary Medical Association definition reproduced by Cornell describes euthanasia as “the act of inducing humane death in an animal.” It adds that, when an animal’s life is taken, it should be done with the highest degree of respect and with an emphasis on making death as painless and distress-free as possible.
That ethical purpose can create mixed emotions. A veterinarian may believe euthanasia is the kindest medical option and still feel sorrow about losing a patient. Fred Scott, DVM, PhD, former director of Cornell University’s Feline Health Center, described it as “both a blessing and a curse—a blessing that we can do it in order to relieve an animal’s suffering, but a curse in that we have to make the decision.”

The cat’s suffering is only one part of the situation
Veterinarians must evaluate whether treatment options are exhausted, whether an illness has reached an end stage, whether neurological problems are severe, or whether an injury is irreparable. They also have to explain likely outcomes and quality-of-life concerns in language an owner can understand. Those judgments can feel heavy because the decision cannot be reversed.
The owner’s grief is present in the room
A cat may be a person’s companion for many years. Owners can be frightened, guilty, angry, or uncertain, and the veterinarian must provide clear information while witnessing that distress. Cornell notes that veterinarians are typically sensitive to owners’ emotional needs and may accommodate extra time, the owner’s presence, and privacy after the procedure. Supporting the person while caring for the animal adds substantial emotional labor.
Is the decision harder than the procedure?
Evidence suggests that many veterinary professionals find the decision-making process particularly demanding. A qualitative study by Matte and colleagues examined experiences across 10 veterinary hospitals in Wellington County, Ontario. Participants often said that navigating the euthanasia decision and communicating with owners was a greater challenge, and a larger contributor to reduced wellbeing, than performing the procedure itself.

| Part of the appointment | Emotional demands commonly described by veterinary professionals | What this means for an owner |
|---|---|---|
| Decision and communication | Assessing suffering, discussing uncertain outcomes, answering difficult questions, and helping an owner authorize an irreversible choice. | Questions, pauses, or requests for time are normal. The veterinarian may need to revisit quality-of-life information rather than rush to a conclusion. |
| Performing euthanasia | Maintaining technical focus, protecting the cat from distress, and allowing the family to say goodbye. | A composed, procedural manner helps the team provide safe, respectful care; it does not indicate emotional indifference. |
| After the death | Managing remains, paperwork, privacy, and the owner’s immediate grief while returning to other patients. | You can ask about aftercare arrangements and request a few quiet minutes if you need them. |
The Ontario study was qualitative and involved a defined region, so it does not establish that every veterinarian has the same experience. It does show why a veterinarian might seem especially affected during the conversation before euthanasia, even when the technical part appears calm.
What veterinary wellbeing findings show
Survey of veterinarians in South Australia
Dow and colleagues surveyed veterinary surgeons registered in South Australia in 2015; 105 responded. In that responding sample, nearly half reported high to very high levels of compassion fatigue. A significant proportion also said that dealing with bereaved clients affected their mental health.

These figures are not a cat-specific rate, a worldwide estimate, or a measure of how many veterinarians cry during euthanasia. They describe one survey population and show that repeated exposure to clients’ grief can have a meaningful psychological impact.
Professional quality-of-life findings
Rohlf and colleagues analyzed predictors of professional quality of life among veterinary professionals in a 2022 Journal of Veterinary Medical Education study. In their regression models, personal factors accounted for 31.1% of the variance in compassion satisfaction, 45.3% in burnout, and 33.8% in secondary traumatic stress. Organizational factors accounted for 33.3%, 47.9%, and 32.7%, respectively.
Those percentages are model variance figures, not prevalence rates and not the proportion caused by euthanizing cats. They indicate that wellbeing is shaped by a combination of individual circumstances and workplace conditions. A veterinarian’s reaction to one appointment therefore cannot be interpreted without considering workload, support, experience, and personal life.
How a veterinarian may feel before, during, and after euthanasia
Before the appointment
The veterinarian may feel concern about whether the cat is suffering, uncertainty about the owner’s readiness, or anxiety about explaining choices clearly. They may also feel anticipatory sadness if the cat has been treated by the practice for years. If several family members disagree, the conversation can become particularly stressful.
During the decision conversation
Veterinarians often balance empathy with clinical honesty. They may need to explain what treatment could accomplish, what care would be required at home, and whether treatment is likely to improve or worsen quality of life. Cornell recommends that owners ask whether the cat is suffering, what treatments remain, what those treatments might achieve, and what home care would involve.

Owner authorization is required for euthanasia. A veterinarian can recommend it, explain alternatives, and answer questions, but the owner makes the legal and personal decision. The veterinarian may feel sadness, moral weight, or frustration when options are limited, even while believing euthanasia is appropriate.
During the procedure
The team’s attention usually turns to making the cat’s final moments peaceful and respectful and to supporting the family. Professional focus can look emotionally neutral: a veterinarian may speak in a measured voice, follow familiar steps, or move efficiently. That behavior is compatible with caring deeply. Concentration is part of protecting the animal and avoiding additional distress.
Afterward
Some veterinarians feel grief immediately. Others feel relief that pain has ended, then sadness later. They may have to return to appointments, answer calls, complete records, or help another patient within minutes. Delayed emotion does not mean the cat was unimportant; it can be a way of functioning in a demanding clinical environment.
Why a veterinarian might not show visible sadness
- Professional boundaries: The veterinarian may avoid shifting emotional attention from the owner and cat to their own feelings.
- Technical concentration: Calm communication and controlled movements help keep the experience safe and predictable.
- Different coping styles: People express grief privately, verbally, physically, or not visibly at all.
- Repeated exposure: Familiarity can make the appointment look routine without making it emotionally meaningless.
- Time pressure: A veterinarian may need to care for other animals immediately afterward.
No reliable rule says that tears prove compassion or that a steady expression proves the opposite. The documented findings describe emotional demands and wellbeing risks, not a required facial expression or universal response.
What owners can ask and decide at the appointment
Good information can reduce uncertainty for both the family and the veterinary team. Cornell suggests considering the cat’s quality of life and whether treatment is likely to improve it or worsen it. Before authorizing euthanasia, you can ask:

- Is my cat suffering now, and what signs are you seeing?
- What treatments remain, and what would each one realistically accomplish?
- Would treatment improve comfort and function, or mainly prolong a difficult period?
- What care would be needed at home, and what changes should prompt an urgent call?
- Can I be present, and may other family members say goodbye?
- What options are available for the cat’s remains afterward?
Asking these questions is not challenging the veterinarian’s compassion. It gives the veterinarian the information needed to explain the medical situation and helps you make an informed decision. Fred Scott said, “I always prefer to offer owners as many options as possible.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Ways to support a veterinarian while caring for your cat
Your primary responsibility is to advocate for your cat, not to manage the veterinarian’s emotions. Still, a few practical choices can make the interaction kinder and clearer:
- Tell the team what you need, such as extra explanation, privacy, or a few minutes alone afterward.
- Be honest about your cat’s behavior, appetite, mobility, breathing, pain, and daily comfort so the quality-of-life assessment is accurate.
- Ask for clarification if a medical term or prognosis is unclear rather than agreeing because you feel pressured.
- Thank staff if you wish, but do not feel obligated to comfort them or hide your own grief.
- If you are unsure, ask whether a short pause or a second discussion is medically reasonable.
Veterinary teams are responsible for maintaining professional care even when an appointment is emotionally difficult. You are allowed to cry, ask the same question twice, or request time to say goodbye.
Grief after losing a cat
Grief can be intense because the relationship with a cat is part of daily life, routines, and identity. Cornell’s grief guidance notes that professional support may help when distress continues to impair everyday functioning. Seeking a counselor, physician, or other qualified mental-health professional is appropriate if you cannot work, sleep, eat, or care for yourself over time, or if grief feels unsafe or unmanageable.
There is no requirement to use the phrase “put to sleep.” It is common in everyday speech, but Cornell cautions that euphemisms can confuse children. Clear language such as “euthanasia” or “the veterinarian helped the cat die peacefully” can be easier for children to understand, especially when answering direct questions.

Common misconceptions
“If the vet did not cry, the vet did not care.”
False. Visible emotion varies, and professional composure may help the veterinarian protect the cat and support the family.
“Because vets perform euthanasia often, it must be easy for them.”
False. Repetition can improve technical confidence while repeated exposure to suffering and bereaved owners contributes to compassion fatigue and other wellbeing pressures.
“Feeling sad means the veterinarian thinks euthanasia was the wrong choice.”
Not necessarily. Sadness can coexist with the belief that euthanasia was the most humane option available.

“The studies prove how every veterinarian feels.”
They do not. The South Australian survey, Ontario hospital study, and professional-quality-of-life analysis involve defined populations and different methods. They provide context, not a universal emotional script.
The bottom line for owners
A veterinarian may feel genuinely sad when euthanizing a cat, even when the decision is medically justified and the procedure is handled calmly. The hardest part may be helping an owner decide, explaining what the cat is experiencing, and witnessing the family’s grief. Look for clear communication, respect for your cat, and willingness to answer questions—not a particular display of tears—as signs of compassionate care.
