Does Cod Fish Have Worms? What to Know About Codworms and Safe Cooking

Cod can occasionally contain natural parasitic roundworms called codworms or sealworms. They do not automatically mean the fish is spoiled, but raw or undercooked cod can cause anisakiasis. Learn how cooking, validated freezing, safe handling, and symptom awareness reduce the risk.

Yes—cod can occasionally contain naturally occurring parasitic roundworms commonly called codworms or sealworms. Finding one does not automatically mean the fish is rotten or was mishandled. The important safety issue is whether the cod is eaten raw or undercooked: infected marine fish can transmit anisakiasis, a parasitic illness.

For cod prepared at home, cook the fish until its thickest part reaches 145°F (63°C), measured with a food thermometer. Do not rely on trimming out a visible worm, color, or flaking alone to make raw or undercooked cod safe.

What are the worms found in cod?

“Codworm” and “sealworm” are everyday names for anisakid nematodes—marine roundworms that can include species from groups such as Anisakis, Pseudoterranova, and Contracaecum.

These parasites have a natural marine life cycle involving marine mammals, smaller aquatic animals, and fish. Cod can acquire the larvae by eating infected prey. In other words, the presence of a worm usually reflects the fish’s natural food chain rather than poor sanitation after harvest.

Is it normal to find a worm in cod?

It can happen, although that does not mean every cod contains worms. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency describes small, round worms—ranging from creamy white to dark brown—as occasionally occurring in fish, particularly cod. It also says their presence is not an indication that the fish was mishandled or spoiled.

Commercial processing is designed to reduce the chance that consumers will encounter them. For example, cod fillets may be inspected over an illuminated glass table, where transmitted light can help reveal worms in the flesh. This screening lowers the risk but is not perfect, so an affected fillet can still reach the market.

Does a worm mean the cod is spoiled?

No. A visible parasite and bacterial spoilage are separate problems. A worm may be present in otherwise fresh cod, while spoiled cod may contain no visible worm at all.

Check the fish for ordinary signs of spoilage as well. Do not eat seafood with a sour, rancid, strongly fishy, or ammonia-like odor. If the fish smells spoiled, discard it rather than trying to solve the problem by removing a worm or cooking it longer.

Can you eat cod if you see a worm?

Do not eat visibly affected cod raw or undercooked. At home, the safest practical option is to remove the visibly affected portion, prevent the raw fish and its juices from touching ready-to-eat food, and cook the remaining fish thoroughly.

Removing the worm or trimming the flesh is not, by itself, a reliable safety treatment. A visible worm may not be the only parasite present, and trimming does not make raw or undercooked fish safe. Thorough cooking is the key control.

How to cook cod safely

  1. Place the thermometer in the thickest part of the fillet. Avoid touching the pan, tray, or a bone, because that can give a misleading reading.
  2. Cook until the internal temperature reaches 145°F (63°C).
  3. Check more than one thick piece if the fillets vary substantially in size.
  4. Clean the thermometer, cutting board, knife, counter, and your hands after they contact raw fish.

The flesh should usually look opaque and separate easily with a fork, but appearance is less dependable than temperature. An instant-read food thermometer is useful here because it verifies whether the cod has reached the recommended cooking temperature; it does not detect parasites or make undercooked fish safe.

Does cooking kill codworms?

Yes. Normal thorough cooking temperatures destroy sealworms. Reaching 145°F (63°C) in the fish’s interior provides a practical household target for fin fish and is safer than judging doneness only by appearance.

Does freezing kill worms in cod?

Validated freezing procedures can kill seafood parasites. The control conditions cited by the CDC include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • -4°F (-20°C) or colder for seven days; or
  • colder commercial time-and-temperature combinations, such as -31°F (-35°C) until solid, followed by the specified holding period.

These are precise time-and-temperature controls, not a general instruction to put fish in a household freezer “for a while.” A domestic freezer may not maintain the required temperature consistently, and the fish may not freeze uniformly. Unless validated parasite-control conditions are known to have been met, cooking remains the safest general choice.

Freezing also has limits: it can control parasites under appropriate conditions but does not eliminate every harmful germ. Freezing should therefore not be treated as a universal sterilization method.

What about raw cod, sushi, or ceviche?

Raw or lightly prepared cod carries more parasite risk than fully cooked cod. Do not assume that lemon juice, vinegar, salt, alcohol, smoking, or a quick sear reliably destroys anisakid larvae.

Raw fish served commercially is subject to food-safety procedures, and FDA guidance identifies freezing by the processor as the practical effective control for recognized parasite hazards in fish intended to be eaten raw. If you choose raw seafood, use a product and supplier that follow appropriate parasite-control procedures rather than relying on a home freezer or visual inspection.

What if you already ate undercooked cod?

Anisakiasis can cause symptoms such as:

  • abdominal pain or severe stomach discomfort;
  • nausea or vomiting;
  • abdominal distention;
  • diarrhea;
  • blood or mucus in the stool; and
  • a mild fever.

Allergic reactions can also occur, including rash and itching, and rarely a severe reaction such as anaphylaxis. Symptoms often begin within hours, but illness caused by larvae that travel farther into the bowel can appear later—sometimes one to two weeks after exposure.

If you become ill after eating raw or undercooked cod, contact a healthcare professional and mention the seafood exposure. Diagnosis may involve endoscopy, imaging, or, in some cases, surgery; an embedded worm may be removed endoscopically or surgically. Do not attempt to diagnose or treat anisakiasis yourself.

Seek urgent medical help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face or throat, faintness, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or blood in the stool.

Can dogs or cats eat cod with worms?

A visible worm is a reason not to feed the fish raw to a pet. The research and safety guidance on anisakid parasites applies directly to people, while an individual pet’s risks also depend on its species, health, diet, and the fish’s preparation.

If you give cod to a dog or cat, use plain, fully cooked, boneless fish with no onion, garlic, heavy seasoning, or rich sauce. Do not assume that removing a visible worm makes raw cod suitable for a pet, and ask a veterinarian about raw fish if your animal has a medical condition or a specialized diet.

Safe handling checklist

  • Cook cod to 145°F (63°C) internally.
  • Use a food thermometer instead of relying only on color or flaking.
  • Avoid raw or undercooked cod unless appropriate commercial parasite-control procedures are confirmed.
  • Keep raw seafood separate from ready-to-eat foods.
  • Wash hands and clean utensils, cutting boards, and counters after handling raw fish.
  • Do not treat trimming out a worm as a substitute for cooking.
  • Discard fish with sour, rancid, ammonia-like, or unusually strong fishy odors.
  • Remember that freezing can control parasites only under validated conditions and does not kill every harmful germ.

So, does cod fish have worms? It can occasionally—but a visible codworm does not automatically mean the fish is spoiled. Cook cod thoroughly, avoid raw or undercooked visibly affected fish, and treat symptoms after risky exposure seriously.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does finding a worm mean cod is rotten?

No. Codworms are naturally occurring marine parasites, and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency says their presence is not evidence that the fish was mishandled or spoiled. Spoilage is a separate issue, so discard cod with sour, rancid, ammonia-like, or unusually strong fishy odors.

Can I eat cod after removing the worm?

Cooking is the safest household control. Cook cod until its thickest part reaches 145°F (63°C), checked with a food thermometer. Do not assume that removing a visible worm makes raw or undercooked fish safe.

Does freezing cod kill the worms?

Validated freezing can kill seafood parasites, but the required time and temperature must actually be met. CDC-listed controls include -4°F (-20°C) for seven days or colder commercial combinations. A normal home-freezer period is not automatically equivalent, and freezing does not kill every harmful germ.

What should I do if I ate undercooked cod?

Possible symptoms include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, abdominal distention, diarrhea, blood or mucus in stool, and mild fever. Allergic reactions such as rash or itching can also occur. Contact a healthcare professional after symptoms following raw or undercooked cod and mention the seafood exposure; seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, faintness, severe pain, persistent vomiting, or blood in stool.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Cod can occasionally contain natural parasitic roundworms called codworms or sealworms. They do not automatically indicate spoilage, but raw or undercooked infected cod can cause anisakiasis. Cook cod to 145°F (63°C) with a food thermometer; do not rely on trimming, visual inspection, or an ordinary freezer as a substitute.
