Yes. Atlantic cod (*Gadus morhua*) have many small scales on their skin, according to NOAA Fisheries. That confirms the answer for Atlantic cod; it should not be taken as evidence about every fish called “cod.”
What do cod scales look and do?
NOAA describes Atlantic cod as having many small scales. They are part of the fish’s outer skin, unlike otoliths, which are hard structures inside the skull.

Are scales used to tell how old Atlantic cod are?
Generally, no. NOAA’s current Northeast age-sample table lists otoliths—not scales—as the age structure collected for Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua): NOAA Fisheries age-sample collection table.

NOAA’s cod-specific ageing account says scales have not generally provided reliable age readings, even for younger fish, and that age determinations are based on otoliths: NOAA Fisheries, Age and Growth of Cod. For groundfish more broadly, NOAA explains that growth marks on scales can crowd together near the edge, leading to underestimated ages; scales can also erode, shed, or regenerate, complicating readings: NOAA Fisheries, Age and Growth.
