Yes, dog food can expire in the practical sense that its quality declines and, if it is contaminated or mishandled, it can become unsafe. The printed date is a manufacturer’s quality marker, not a guarantee that every package is safe until midnight on that day or dangerous the next morning. The useful answer depends on whether the food is sealed or opened, dry or wet, how it was stored, and whether the package or food shows warning signs.
Use the package instructions for the exact product, keep food cool and dry, refrigerate opened wet food promptly, and discard anything that smells foul, has damaged packaging, or looks abnormal. When in doubt, contact the manufacturer with the lot number and best-by information.

What a dog-food date actually tells you
Pet-food companies choose date wording such as Best By, Use By, Use Before or Sell By. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) explains that these dates generally indicate when product quality is expected to start decreasing. They are set by the company and usually describe the food in its manufacturer-sealed package.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteA date does not replace an inspection of the food. Heat, moisture, oxygen, a broken seal, poor refrigeration or contamination can damage food before the printed date. Conversely, an unopened package stored correctly may not suddenly become hazardous when the date passes, but its freshness and nutrient quality are no longer covered by the manufacturer’s stated window. Do not treat a recently passed date as proof of safety, and do not treat the date alone as proof that a sound package is spoiled.

FDA requires animal food to be safe to eat, made under sanitary conditions, free of harmful substances and truthfully labeled under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Those requirements reduce risk, but they cannot make every individual package immune from a defect or contamination.
Sealed and opened food require different decisions
Once a package is opened, air, humidity, handling and kitchen temperatures become part of the food’s storage history. The following framework keeps the date in context.
| Food situation | What to check | Practical action |
|---|---|---|
| Unopened dry food | Best-by wording, intact seal, storage below 80°F, no tears, dampness or discoloration | Use the label as the primary guide. Do not use a package with damage or signs of moisture or pests. |
| Opened dry food | Opening date, heat and humidity exposure, odor, appearance and label directions | Keep tightly closed and use the product’s stated window. A cautious freshness target is four to six weeks; one manufacturer guide allows two to three months when properly stored. |
| Unopened canned or pouched food | Date, intact container, swelling, leaks, rust, dents affecting the seam and storage temperature | Store cool and dry. Reject a swollen or leaking container or any package with suspicious damage. |
| Opened wet food | Time at room temperature, refrigerator temperature, covering and odor or appearance | Cover and refrigerate at 40°F or below promptly, then follow the label. Purina’s general guidance is to use refrigerated leftovers within three days; another Purina page gives two to three days. |
How to store dry dog food safely
FDA’s exact instruction is: “Store dry pet food and unopened canned food in a cool and dry place.” For dry food, FDA recommends a temperature below 80°F. Excess heat or moisture can accelerate nutrient breakdown and promote mold or other deterioration. A garage, shed, car or sunny porch may exceed that limit even when the house feels comfortable.

Keep the original bag whenever possible
The original bag protects the food and carries the product name, manufacturer, UPC, lot number and best-by date. Keeping the bag inside an airtight storage bin gives you the protection of the container without losing the identifying information. Close the bag securely after each serving and keep it off a damp floor.
If you transfer kibble to another container
- Choose a container that is clean, completely dry and fitted with a snug lid.
- Keep the original bag inside the container, or record the UPC, product name, manufacturer, lot number and best-by date before pouring.
- Empty and wash the container between bags; let it dry fully before adding new food.
- Do not top off old kibble with a new bag. Residue can carry stale oils, crumbs or contamination into the fresh food.
A storage container helps control air, pests and humidity. It does not extend the labeled date or make questionable food safe.

How long opened kibble stays fresh
There is no single FDA shelf-life number for opened kibble. Manufacturer guidance can differ even within the same company. Purina gives one general recommendation to use opened dry food within four to six weeks for maximum freshness. A separate Purina guide says properly stored opened dry food may be used within two to three months. Those are general manufacturer windows, not a universal safety guarantee or an FDA-established rule.
Use the shorter four-to-six-week period as a cautious freshness target when the package does not give a more specific instruction. Count from the day the bag is opened, not from the printed best-by date. Shorten the interval if the food has been exposed to heat, humidity, repeated opening, an ill-fitting lid or a wet scoop. If the kibble develops a rancid or otherwise foul smell, visible mold, unusual moisture, insects, discoloration or a texture your dog rejects, discard it regardless of age.
How to handle opened wet food
Wet food spoils faster after opening because it contains substantially more moisture. Put unused canned or pouched food in a covered container and refrigerate it at 40°F or below as soon as the meal is finished. FDA’s general direction is to refrigerate promptly or discard unused food.
Purina recommends using refrigerated opened wet food within three days; its separate wet-food guidance describes a two-to-three-day window. Follow the exact label if it is stricter, and throw the food away sooner if it smells sour or foul, changes color or texture, dries out unusually, or has been left warm for an uncertain period. Do not rely on reheating to rescue food that has been mishandled.
How long can wet food sit out?
There is no safe universal room-temperature allowance that overrides the product label and the conditions in your home. The longer opened wet food sits out, the more opportunity bacteria have to multiply. If you cannot establish that it was promptly refrigerated, the safer choice is disposal rather than returning it to the refrigerator.

Warning signs that mean “discard it”
Inspect both the package and the food before serving. FDA identifies several problems that warrant stopping use:

- A swollen, bulging or leaking can or pouch.
- Foreign objects in the food.
- Tears, punctures, dampness, severe dents at a can seam or discoloration on the package.
- Visible mold, insects, unusual clumping or a marked change in color or texture.
Do not buy visibly damaged food from a store, and do not taste pet food to test it. A dog’s willingness to eat it is not a safety test; some hazards do not produce an obvious smell or appearance.
How to read dates, lot numbers and packing codes
The best-by date may appear near a lot number, but printed codes are not interchangeable. FDA notes that lot numbers can be on the bottom, side or near the top of bags and pouches. Cans often show them on the bottom and sometimes on the lid. A packing code may identify production and distribution information rather than the date consumers should use.
Before discarding a questionable package, photograph or record the product name, manufacturer, UPC, lot number and best-by date. FDA reports that less than half of the pet-food complaints it receives include a lot number, even though that detail helps identify a defective batch or connect a report to a recall. Keep the package when practical, especially if your dog became ill.
A routine that prevents most storage mistakes
- Check the package when buying. Reject tears, leaks, swelling, severe seam dents, wet cardboard or unusual discoloration.
- Write the opening date. Mark the bag, lid or storage note so an opened-food window is not guessed later.
- Store correctly. Keep dry food and unopened cans or pouches below 80°F in a cool, dry location, away from sunlight and sinks.
- Control moisture. Use a dry scoop and never put a wet utensil into kibble.
- Refrigerate wet leftovers. Cover them and keep the refrigerator at 40°F or below.
- Rotate stock. Finish older, properly stored food before opening a newer bag, while still discarding anything that shows a warning sign.
- Clean between bags. Wash and dry a transfer container completely before refilling it.
- Keep identifiers. Preserve the original bag or record the UPC, lot number, product name, manufacturer and date.
What to do if your dog ate questionable food
Stop feeding that product if it smells wrong, the package is swollen or leaking, you find a foreign object, or your dog develops illness after eating it. Provide fresh water and contact a veterinarian promptly, particularly for repeated vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, tremors, abdominal pain, trouble breathing or other severe signs. Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinary professional instructs you to do so.

Save the package and remaining food, and record when it was served and what symptoms occurred. Contact the manufacturer and report product problems to the FDA. The lot number and best-by date are especially useful for tracing the product.
How to make a date-based decision
The package is unopened and past the date
Check the seal, storage history and condition. A past date means the manufacturer’s quality period has ended; it does not establish that the food is safe or unsafe by itself. When storage was uncertain or the package is damaged, discard it. For a product-specific answer, ask the manufacturer using the lot and date information.
The package is opened but still within the date
The printed date cannot erase the effects of opening. Apply the opened-food instructions, refrigeration requirements and freshness windows, then inspect the food. A bag opened months ago is not automatically acceptable merely because its best-by date is still in the future.
You cannot remember when it was opened
Do not estimate in favor of saving food. If you cannot verify that dry food was kept clean, cool and dry, or that wet food was refrigerated promptly, replacement is the lower-risk option.
What is established—and what is not
FDA establishes handling principles: cool, dry storage; below-80°F storage for dry and unopened canned food; refrigeration at 40°F or below for unused canned or pouched food; and attention to package defects and contamination. FDA does not provide one universal number of days or months for every opened dog food.
Opened-food time limits come from individual manufacturers and may differ. Purina’s four-to-six-week maximum-freshness guidance and its separate two-to-three-month properly-stored guidance illustrate why the exact label matters. Treat those figures as product guidance, not permission to ignore odor, appearance, temperature or handling history.
If the label is missing, unreadable or unclear, contact the manufacturer rather than decoding a packing code as though it were a best-by date. Keep current recall and safety information in mind when a specific lot or illness is involved.
