Its Original formula is non-clumping, and the finer Scoop Clumping formula can form soft clumps that break during scooping. Cats.com’s testing found practical tradeoffs in both; which, if either, works for your home depends partly on your cat’s comfort with the texture and the cleanup routine you prefer.
What Cats.com tested
Cats.com’s review, last updated September 19, 2025, says its team purchased three Feline Pine litters and tested them for a few weeks with several cats. The site says it did not receive the products in exchange for a favorable review. The observations and ratings below are Cats.com’s findings, not independent testing by Animalso. The review describes Feline Pine as made from reclaimed pine lumber and covers two formulas: Original, with larger granules and no clumping, and Scoop Clumping, a finer, sawdust-like formula with clumping agents and mineral oil for dust control. Product specifications can change, so check the current packaging for the formula you are considering.

Does Feline Pine clump?
Only Scoop Clumping is intended to clump. Original is non-clumping: its pellets absorb liquid, then break down when wet. That is a different cleanup process from scooping intact urine clumps out of a clay litter.
#1 Best Overall
- NO HARSH CHEMICALS, NO ADDED FRAGRANCE—this non-clumping cat litter is an effective odor eliminator that’s made simple with plant-based ingredients like natural pine shavings, plus the absorbent power of ARM & HAMMER Baking Soda.
- BEST NATURAL ODOR CONTROL WITH NO ADDED FRAGRANCES + BAKING SODA. Eliminate the toughest odors with plant-based ingredients instead of harsh chemicals or synthetic perfumes.
- HIGHLY ABSORBENT PINE LOCKS AWAY ODORS. The pine shavings in this lightweight non-clumping cat litter directly bind to odors like thousands of tiny sponges to soak up liquid and lock away ammonia odors to keep the litter box fresh and dry.
- LIGHTWEIGHT so changing and refilling the cat litter box is fast and easy. That’s because this absorbent non-clumping kitty litter is natural and less than half the weight of clay litter and leaves no messy cloud of dust.
- A NATURAL CAT LITTER CHOICE. No new trees are cut down to make the pine shavings in feline pine. This cat litter comes from kiln dried shavings reclaimed from lumber production, so it’s a kitty litter that respects our precious natural resources.
Original: absorbent pellets, not clumps
Cats.com reported that Original absorbed liquid quickly and produced little dust when poured. It also found reasonable urine-odor control in its testing. However, wet pellets broke down and could stick to the litter box. The formula did not form clumps, so owners should not expect to remove urine as a neat scoopable mass. Cats in the review used it for urine but preferred clay for solid waste.
Scoop Clumping: clumps that may crumble
Cats.com found that Scoop Clumping absorbed liquid and formed defined clumps, but those clumps remained soft and could break apart during scooping. The litter sometimes stuck to the bottom of the box, and the reviewer found that odor control did not last as long as with clay litter.
Rank #2

- No harsh chemicals or synthetic perfumes.
- Highly Absorbent, binds directly to ammonia odors and locks them away.
- Sawdust shavings are gentle on kitty's paws.
- Lightweight

Will your cat accept the pellets?
Texture is a key uncertainty. Cats.com reports that some cats disliked Original’s large pellets, and its test cats preferred traditional clay for solid waste. A cat accustomed to fine-grained litter may not readily accept larger pellets; individual preferences vary. If you try Original, watch whether your cat uses the box consistently rather than assuming a change in litter will suit every cat.

What cleanup is like
With Original, expect a non-clumping routine: liquid-wet pellets break down, so removing soiled material is not the same as lifting intact clumps. Cats.com’s pine-litter comparison guide notes that a sifting box can let broken-down sawdust fall through while leaving usable pellets above. This is an optional approach for pellet formats, not a requirement or a guarantee of easier cleaning. See Cats.com’s pine-litter comparison guide.
With Scoop Clumping, the intended routine is to scoop clumps, but the reviewer’s observation that they can crumble means scooping may be less tidy than with firmer clumping litter. In either case, check the box for material sticking to the bottom.

- Vet-Developed Pine Reduces Infection Risk
- Safe, All-Natural, Kiln-Dried Pine
- Environmentally Friendly, Sustainable Litter

How Feline Pine fits among pine litters
Cats.com’s comparison guide covers several pine products, including Nature’s Logic, Small Pet Select, and Dr. Elsey’s, and calls Feline Pine its budget pick. That designation is the publisher’s judgment, not a universal ranking. The guide does not establish a current price comparison here, and prices, bag sizes, stock, and retailer listings can change; compare current local listings before choosing.
When comparing pine litters, focus on the differences that affect daily use: whether the formula clumps, how large or fine the particles are, whether your cat accepts the texture, how it handles urine and solid-waste odor, and how much dust or tracking you observe at home. A lower-cost option may not be a better fit if its format makes cleanup or acceptance difficult for your cat.

Is Feline Pine cat litter a good choice?
It may suit households looking for a pine-based litter that absorbs urine and, in Cats.com’s testing of Original, generated little dust when poured. It is a less natural fit for someone who expects firm, easy-to-scoop urine clumps: Original does not clump, while Scoop Clumping’s soft clumps could break apart. The Cats.com review rated Original 2.75/5 and Scoop Clumping 3/5 overall, reflecting the tradeoffs its reviewers observed.
Cats.com’s review also warns against using the litter for small pets such as rabbits and guinea pigs, citing possible respiratory irritation, and says to use it only in a cat litter box. That is the review’s warning; it is not independently confirmed here by a veterinary or manufacturer source. Follow product-label directions and consult a veterinarian if you have a safety concern.
