Yes, tuna contains omega-3 fatty acids—mainly EPA and DHA. But whether tuna is an appropriate source of omega-3 for a dog or cat is a separate question. The amount varies by species, product, serving size, and preparation, and tuna should not automatically be treated as a substitute for a pet-formulated omega-3 supplement or a complete, balanced diet.

For people, canned light tuna in water provides roughly 190 milligrams of combined EPA and DHA in a 3-ounce serving according to an NIH reference value. A pet’s portion is usually much smaller, and the nutritional value of a particular can can differ substantially. If you are considering tuna for your pet, check with your veterinarian—especially if your pet would eat it regularly, has a medical condition, or is already taking an omega-3 supplement.

What kind of omega-3 is in tuna?

There are three principal omega-3 fatty acids:

  • ALA (alpha-linolenic acid): found mainly in plant oils and some seeds.
  • EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid): a marine omega-3 found in fish and seafood.
  • DHA (docosahexaenoic acid): another marine omega-3 found in fish and seafood.

Tuna’s relevant omega-3 contribution is primarily EPA and DHA, not ALA. That is why tuna is sometimes discussed as a dietary source of marine omega-3s.

For pets, however, the important practical question is not simply whether a food contains EPA and DHA. It is whether the amount, preparation, and feeding frequency are appropriate for that individual animal. The available nutrition figures for tuna are generally reported for human foods and should not be interpreted as a recommended serving size for a dog or cat.

How much omega-3 does tuna contain?

The amount is not fixed. It can vary according to:

  • the tuna species;
  • whether it is light tuna or white/albacore tuna;
  • whether it is canned or fresh;
  • whether it is packed in water or oil;
  • the drained serving weight; and
  • the specific product and nutrient database used.

As a reference, the U.S. National Institutes of Health lists approximately 0.17 grams of DHA and 0.02 grams of EPA—about 190 milligrams combined EPA plus DHA—for 3 ounces of light tuna canned in water and drained [C002]. That is a reference-food value, not a guarantee for every can.

Product labels can show different numbers. For example, one StarKist chunk-light tuna in water product reports 160 milligrams of EPA plus DHA per 3-ounce serving, while its 5-ounce can reports 180 milligrams per serving [C003]. The label on the exact product is therefore more useful than assuming that all tuna has the same omega-3 content.

Is canned tuna a source of omega-3?

Yes. Canned light tuna in water contains EPA and DHA. “Light tuna” commonly uses smaller tuna species, most often skipjack, while “white tuna” generally means albacore. These categories should not be treated as nutritionally identical [C002][C004].

USDA legacy nutrient tables illustrate the variation. They list approximately 0.040 grams of EPA per 3 ounces for light tuna canned in water without salt, 0.198 grams for white tuna canned in water, and 0.056 grams for white tuna canned in oil [C005]. These are representative database entries—not universal specifications for every brand or can.

For a pet owner, this means a spoonful of tuna may contain some marine omega-3, but the precise amount is difficult to estimate without knowing the product, drained weight, and portion. Tuna is not a predictable way to deliver a veterinarian-selected EPA or DHA dose.

Is albacore tuna better than light tuna?

Not necessarily. Some commonly cited nutrient databases show more omega-3 in white or albacore tuna than in light tuna, but the difference depends on the product and serving. A higher database value does not by itself make albacore the better choice for a pet.

The more consistent distinction is mercury exposure. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says albacore, also called white tuna, typically contains about three times more mercury than canned light tuna [C004]. FDA guidance places canned light tuna in the “Best Choices” category, while albacore/white tuna and yellowfin tuna are in the “Good Choices” category. Bigeye tuna is in the “Choices to Avoid” category for people covered by that advice, including pregnant or breastfeeding people and children ages 1 through 11 [C004][C006].

Those FDA/EPA categories are human food guidance, not a pet-feeding chart. Still, they are an important reason not to choose albacore for a dog or cat merely because a nutrient table may show more EPA or DHA. If tuna is offered at all, ask your veterinarian about the species, product, portion, and frequency.

Is tuna a good omega-3 source for dogs and cats?

Tuna does provide marine omega-3s, but ordinary canned tuna is usually not the most controlled or concentrated way to supplement a pet’s diet.

There are several reasons:

  • Human nutrition labels do not establish a pet dose. A label may provide EPA and DHA for a human serving, but it does not tell you how much your individual pet needs.
  • The content varies among products. Light, white, fresh, water-packed, and oil-packed tuna can have different nutrient values.
  • Mercury exposure matters when feeding fish repeatedly. Tuna type affects the human mercury guidance, and frequent feeding should not be assumed to be harmless for every pet.
  • Tuna is not automatically complete and balanced for pets. Even when a food supplies a desirable nutrient, it does not replace the nutritional requirements of the animal’s regular diet.
  • Supplementing can be inappropriate for some animals. Pets with health conditions, dietary restrictions, or medications may need individualized advice before receiving extra fish or omega-3 products.

For these reasons, occasional tuna and a veterinarian-directed omega-3 supplement are not interchangeable decisions. If your goal is to provide EPA and DHA for a specific reason, ask your veterinarian which source and dose are appropriate rather than trying to calculate a dose from a human tuna label.

What fish are higher in omega-3 than tuna?

Tuna is an omega-3 source, but it is not usually the most concentrated fish choice. The American Heart Association highlights fatty fish such as salmon, sardines, herring, mackerel, and some tuna as omega-3-rich options [C007]. USDA EPA data place several seafood choices—including herring, salmon, trout, oysters, and some mackerel preparations—above the listed tuna entries [C005].

That comparison is useful when choosing seafood for people, but it should not be turned into an automatic recommendation to feed any of those foods to a pet. Fish species, preparation, bones, salt, oils, seasonings, calorie content, and the animal’s health all matter. A pet-specific product or veterinary recommendation is easier to dose consistently than table scraps.

What should pet owners check before offering tuna?

  1. Ask what problem you are trying to solve. If you simply want to share a small amount of food, that is different from trying to treat dry skin, joint disease, inflammation, or another medical concern.
  2. Identify the tuna type. The label should say whether it is light, white, albacore, or another species. Do not assume that one type has the same mercury or omega-3 profile as another.
  3. Read the ingredient and nutrition information. Check the serving size, drained weight, EPA/DHA information if provided, and whether the product contains added ingredients.
  4. Avoid calculating a pet dose from the human serving size. A 3-ounce human serving is not a recommendation for a pet of any size.
  5. Consider frequency, not just one serving. Occasional exposure and repeated fish feeding are different risk questions.
  6. Get veterinary guidance for regular use. This is particularly important for puppies, kittens, senior pets, pets with chronic disease, pets on prescription diets, or pets already receiving supplements.

How often can pets eat tuna?

There is no single tuna-feeding frequency that is appropriate for every dog or cat based on the human nutrition data summarized here. The research establishes that tuna contains EPA and DHA and that tuna products differ in mercury and omega-3 content; it does not establish a universal safe portion or schedule for pets.

Do not use the FDA’s human fish-serving recommendations as pet instructions. For human readers, FDA guidance summarizes a recommendation of at least 8 ounces of seafood per week on a 2,000-calorie diet and gives more specific advice for people who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding [C006]. Those recommendations are not designed for animals.

If your pet eats recreationally caught fish, follow local fish-consumption advisories and discuss the catch with your veterinarian. Local advisories can be more relevant than general guidance because contaminant levels vary by waterway and species.

Tuna versus a pet omega-3 supplement

Consideration Tuna Pet-formulated omega-3 product
EPA/DHA amount Can vary by species, brand, preparation, and portion Usually stated per measured dose, but verify the label
Mercury considerations Depend partly on the tuna type and feeding frequency Depends on the ingredient and manufacturing controls
Calorie contribution Counts as food and may add calories Still may add calories, depending on the formulation
Use for a medical goal Difficult to dose consistently from a human food Can be selected and dosed with veterinary guidance

This does not mean every supplement is appropriate or that a supplement should be started without advice. It means the two options serve different purposes. A veterinarian can help determine whether extra EPA or DHA is warranted and, if so, select a product and dose that fit the pet.

The practical answer

  • Does tuna have omega-3? Yes. Tuna contains the marine omega-3s EPA and DHA.
  • Does every tuna product contain the same amount? No. Values vary with species, product type, preparation, and serving size.
  • Is albacore automatically better? No. Some databases show higher omega-3 values, but albacore generally has higher mercury than canned light tuna in FDA comparisons.
  • Is tuna the best way to give a pet omega-3? Not automatically. Human tuna labels do not provide a universal pet dose, and repeated feeding raises product-selection and mercury questions.
  • What is the safest next step? If tuna is more than an occasional treat—or if you want omega-3 for a health reason—ask your veterinarian about an appropriate fish or pet-formulated supplement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can dogs eat tuna for omega-3?

Tuna contains EPA and DHA, but human tuna nutrition data do not establish a safe or useful dose for every dog. Before feeding tuna regularly or using it to address a health concern, ask your veterinarian about the product, portion, and frequency.

Can cats get omega-3 from tuna?

Yes, tuna contains marine omega-3s, but tuna should not be assumed to be a complete or balanced food for cats or a precise substitute for a cat-formulated omega-3 product. Discuss regular feeding with your veterinarian.

Which has more omega-3: light tuna or albacore?

Some nutrient databases show higher EPA values for white or albacore tuna, but the difference varies by product. Albacore also typically contains about three times more mercury than canned light tuna according to FDA information, so it should not be chosen solely for a potentially higher omega-3 value.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is salmon better than tuna for omega-3?

Salmon, sardines, herring, and mackerel are often more concentrated omega-3 choices than ordinary canned light tuna. That comparison is based on human seafood data and does not by itself determine which fish is appropriate for a particular pet.

The Bottom Line

Tuna does have omega-3—mainly EPA and DHA—but that does not make it a universal or ideal omega-3 supplement for pets. Tuna’s nutrient content varies, albacore generally carries more mercury than canned light tuna, and human serving data cannot be converted into a safe pet dose. For occasional feeding or any regular use, choose the product carefully and ask your veterinarian before making tuna part of your pet’s routine.
