Dog Breeds That Shed the Most: What to Avoid If You Hate Loose Hair

Dense double-coated breeds can leave substantial loose hair, especially during seasonal coat changes. See which examples to research, how lower-shedding coats trade hair for grooming, and how to manage shedding safely.

If loose dog hair is a dealbreaker, start by looking for coat structure rather than a supposed “worst shedder” ranking. Breeds with dense double coats—such as Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Corgis, Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, Newfoundlands, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Great Pyrenees, Saint Bernards, Pomeranians, Samoyeds, American Eskimo Dogs, and Alaskan Malamutes—are likely to put more undercoat around your home, especially when they shed seasonally. They are examples to investigate, not a scientifically measured order from most to least hair.

Lower-shedding breeds including Poodles, Bichon Frises, Maltese, and Yorkshire Terriers may leave less loose hair on floors and furniture, but their hair keeps growing and can mat without regular brushing and professional grooming. No breed is guaranteed to be allergy-free. The right choice depends on the amount of hair you can tolerate, the grooming work you can do, your climate, and the individual dog’s coat.

What shedding actually tells you

Shedding is the normal replacement of old or damaged hairs. Breed, coat structure, undercoat density, season, hormones, health, nutrition, and the individual dog all affect how much hair comes out and where it accumulates. The American Kennel Club’s guidance on shedding and double-coated dogs explains that a thick undercoat commonly produces more visible loose hair, with heavier “blowouts” when a dog changes from one seasonal coat to another.

Visible hair is not a perfect measure of total shedding. A long, pale hair may be easy to spot on dark clothing, while short hairs can work into upholstery and carpets. Some curly coats hold shed hairs until brushing removes them, so a home may look cleaner even though the dog still releases hair every day. Coat length alone therefore cannot predict the amount of hair in your house.

The available guidance does not establish a comparable numeric shedding scale for breeds. Treat breed lists as a starting point for questions to ask breeders, rescues, groomers, and veterinarians—not as a laboratory ranking.

Double-coated breeds to research carefully

A double coat has a softer, usually dense undercoat beneath a tougher outer coat. The undercoat insulates the dog and is the main source of seasonal loose hair. The following groups, described in American Kennel Club coat guidance, are useful examples of dogs that can challenge a hair-averse household.

Short-coated double coats

Labrador Retrievers and Corgis have relatively short outer hair, but both carry an undercoat. Their hair can appear in concentrated patches on bedding, rugs, and car seats because short undercoat hairs are released in quantity and are harder to see until they collect. A short coat does not mean a low-shedding coat.

Medium-coated double coats

Border Collies and Australian Shepherds combine a medium outer coat with an undercoat. Their active lifestyles can spread loose hair through several rooms, and feathering around the legs, tail, and neck can trap tangles if brushing is irregular.

Long-coated double coats

Newfoundlands, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Great Pyrenees, and Saint Bernards have more coat volume to maintain. Individual dogs vary, but when a large dog releases its undercoat, the absolute amount of hair can be conspicuous simply because there is more coat to replace. Long furnishings also collect dirt and form mats if they are not combed through to the skin.

Arctic and spitz-type coats

Pomeranians, Samoyeds, American Eskimo Dogs, and Alaskan Malamutes are examples of dense Arctic-style double coats. Their plush undercoats can shed heavily during seasonal changes. A compact dog is not automatically easier to live with: a small spitz can still produce a surprising volume of fine hair.

Golden Retrievers

The Golden Retriever is specifically described by the American Kennel Club as a double-coated breed that sheds year-round. Its feathered outer coat makes loose hair easy to notice, while the undercoat adds seasonal surges. Plan for regular brushing and frequent cleaning rather than assuming a single weekly session will contain the hair.

Why a double coat can mean more hair at home

The two layers perform different jobs. Guard hairs help repel moisture and debris; the undercoat provides insulation. As daylight and temperature change, many dogs replace portions of that undercoat. Indoor heating and a stable indoor climate can also make shedding less neatly seasonal, so some dogs release hair throughout the year.

Two dogs of the same breed can shed differently. Age, sex, sterilization status, local climate, indoor temperature, stress, and medical conditions all influence coat cycles. Ask to meet adult relatives of a puppy when possible and ask exactly when the line tends to “blow” its coat. A rescue dog’s current coat may also reflect its previous nutrition and environment, so allow time for an adjustment period before judging its normal pattern.

Lower-shedding choices—and the work they trade for less hair

If your priority is less loose hair on surfaces, the American Kennel Club discusses Poodles, Bichon Frises, Maltese, and Yorkshire Terriers as lower-shedding options. Their hairs tend to remain in the coat until they are removed by brushing or clipping. That can make the floor look cleaner, but it moves the work onto the owner’s grooming routine.

Breed example What owners may notice Maintenance implication
Poodle Less loose hair released into the home than a typical dense double coat Frequent brushing and scheduled clipping to prevent mats
Bichon Frise Curly coat tends to hold shed hairs Regular combing through the coat and professional trims
Maltese Long, fine hair can be less visible as loose floor hair Daily or near-daily brushing when kept long; attention to tangles
Yorkshire Terrier Hair-like coat generally leaves less loose hair than heavy undercoat breeds Routine brushing and trimming; mats can form close to the skin

“Low shedding” is not the same as “maintenance free.” If a dog is not brushed, retained hair can tighten into mats that pull the skin, hide irritation, and make grooming painful. A short trim reduces daily brushing for some owners but does not eliminate the need for skin checks and repeat appointments.

Question Why it matters
How much loose hair can you tolerate? Dense undercoats may create seasonal piles; short hair can be less visible but difficult to remove from fabric.
Can you brush on a fixed schedule? Brushing collects loose hair before it reaches the floor and prevents tangles, but it does not stop normal shedding.
Will you pay for professional grooming? Many low-shedding, continuously growing coats need regular clipping and skilled dematting.
What is your climate and indoor environment? Seasonal changes, heating, humidity, and time outdoors can alter when and how heavily a dog sheds.
Are allergies involved? Allergens come from dander, saliva, and other proteins as well as hair, so shedding quantity cannot predict a person’s reaction.
Are you choosing an individual dog? Coat density and shedding vary within a breed; an adult dog’s observed coat is useful evidence.

A practical grooming routine for shedding dogs

Grooming removes hair in a controlled place and lets you find skin problems early. American Kennel Club guidance recommends matching tools to coat length and structure. A rake or purpose-built undercoat tool can collect loose undercoat from a double coat; a wide-tooth or steel comb can find remaining loose hair and small tangles.

  1. Choose a calm, dry location. Use a nonslip surface and short sessions at first. Stop if the dog is distressed, and reward cooperation.
  2. Separate the coat in sections. Work from the skin outward rather than skimming only the top. Pay particular attention to the neck, behind the ears, armpits, trousers, and tail.
  3. Use an appropriate brush or rake gently. Follow the direction of hair growth and avoid repeated scraping over one area. A tool that catches or breaks the hair is too harsh or unsuitable for that coat.
  4. Check with a comb. A comb should pass through each section without snagging. If it stops at a dense mat, do not yank it; ask a groomer or veterinarian for help.
  5. Finish with a skin check. Look for redness, scabs, parasites, odor, tenderness, or bald spots. Clean tools after use so collected hair and debris do not spread.
  6. Increase frequency during coat changes. Seasonal shedding may require shorter, more frequent sessions and additional vacuuming rather than one long, uncomfortable session.

Tools collect hair; they do not change a breed’s normal coat cycle. Over-brushing cannot turn a heavy shedder into a low-shedding dog.

Why routine shaving is not a shedding solution for double coats

American Kennel Club double-coat guidance generally discourages shaving a double-coated dog as a routine way to cool the dog or reduce hair. The layers provide insulation and protection from sun, weather, and minor skin trauma. As certified master groomer Jennifer Bishop-Jenkins puts it, “Recognizing your dog’s coat type is so important when grooming your dog.”

Shaving can also produce uneven or delayed regrowth, expose lightly pigmented skin to sun, and leave the coat less effective at protecting the dog. Teri Becker DiMarino of the California Professional Pet Groomers Association notes, “Shaving doesn’t do anything to cool dogs off because a dog’s cooling system is different than ours.” Exceptions may be medically necessary, such as surgery, severe matting, or treatment directed by a veterinarian. Ask a qualified groomer or veterinarian before removing a double coat.

Allergies: less hair is not hypoallergenic

No dog is guaranteed to be allergy-free. The American Kennel Club’s allergy guidance explains that reactions are linked to proteins carried in dander, saliva, urine, and on the coat—not simply to the amount of hair on the floor. A lower-shedding dog may work better for one person and still trigger another.

If someone in the household has allergies, spend repeated indoor time with the specific dog before adoption, discuss symptoms with an allergy clinician, and establish cleaning and bedroom-access rules. Do not rely on a breed label as a medical guarantee.

When “normal shedding” may be a health problem

VCA Animal Hospitals notes that nutrition and overall health affect coat condition. Contact a veterinarian when hair loss is sudden, markedly heavier than the dog’s established pattern, or accompanied by bald patches, inflamed or darkened skin, persistent itching, sores, odor, weight change, lethargy, or changes in appetite and thirst. Parasites, allergies, infection, endocrine disease, pain, and nutritional problems can all affect the coat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not dismiss patchy loss as a breed trait, and do not apply human products or supplements without veterinary advice. A veterinarian can examine the skin, review diet and medications, and decide whether testing is needed.

A decision checklist before you bring a dog home

  • Identify whether the breed has a dense undercoat, a continuously growing coat, or neither.
  • Ask how often the adult dog sheds locally and during seasonal coat changes.
  • Watch an adult of the same breed being handled and inspect the coat down to the skin.
  • Budget time for brushing, cleaning, nail care, and any professional grooming appointments.
  • Confirm that everyone with allergies has tolerated contact with the individual dog.
  • Learn the signs of matting and skin disease so you can seek help promptly.
  • Plan a cleaning routine for floors, upholstery, bedding, and the car before the dog arrives.

If loose hair is your overriding concern, a lower-shedding coat may be a better starting point than a dense double coat, provided you accept the brushing and clipping it requires. If you prefer a double-coated breed, choose with realistic expectations: regular grooming can control where hair goes and keep the coat healthy, but it cannot remove shedding from the ownership equation.
