There is no reliable “never with cats” breed list. Terriers, sighthounds and herding dogs deserve closer screening because their historical work can make chasing, pursuing or controlling a moving cat more likely. But breed is only one clue. The individual dog’s behavior, socialization, training and history with cats—and the cat’s confidence and escape options—matter more than a label.
If you already have a cat, choose a dog by demonstrated behavior and plan a slow, supervised introduction. A small dog is not automatically safer: even toy breeds may chase. The goal is not to predict compatibility from a pedigree, but to prevent rehearsal of dangerous chasing while both animals learn that sharing a home is calm and predictable.

Which dog breeds are good with cats?
The best answer is an individual dog that can notice a cat without fixating, responds to cues around movement, and has a history of calm interactions with cats or other small animals. The American Kennel Club (AKC) describes breed-group tendencies as generalizations, not guarantees. A dog from a traditionally cat-friendly group can still have intense chase behavior, while a terrier, sighthound or herding dog may live peacefully with cats after careful matching and training.

| What to assess | Questions to ask or behaviors to observe |
|---|---|
| Response to cats and small animals | Does the dog glance and disengage, or stare, lunge, bark and pull toward them? |
| Living history | Has this specific dog lived safely with cats? For how long, and under what supervision? |
| Movement-triggered arousal | What happens when a cat runs, jumps or disappears behind furniture? |
| Responsiveness to cues | Can the dog reliably respond to “sit,” “stay” or “leave it” when excited? |
| Temperament and energy | Can the household meet the dog’s exercise and enrichment needs without making the cat the outlet? |
| Cat’s comfort and exits | Can the cat reach a permanent dog-free room and elevated escape spaces? |
The reviewed AKC guidance does not provide standardized breed scores, a probability of safe cohabitation or a statistic showing that one breed is inherently compatible. Treat any numerical-sounding guarantee as a warning sign. A shelter, rescue, breeder or qualified behavior professional who knows the particular dog can provide more useful information than a breed chart.
Terriers: purpose-bred to hunt vermin
Many terriers were developed to locate, pursue and dispatch small quarry. That history can produce fast visual tracking, persistence and a strong response to squeaking or darting animals. A cat that bolts across a room may therefore trigger a chase sequence. The concern is not that every terrier will attack a cat; it is that some individuals may find disengaging unusually difficult once aroused.
If you are considering a terrier, ask to see the dog around calm cats and around movement. A dog that can take food, look away and follow a handler’s cue is a different risk profile from one that stiffens, silently stalks or repeatedly slams into a barrier.

Sighthounds: chase is central to the job
Sighthounds were selected to detect and pursue rapidly moving prey. Their visual response can be triggered by a sprinting cat, a fleeing outdoor cat seen through a window or even a fast game indoors. Some sighthounds live contentedly with resident cats, particularly when introduced carefully; others may never be safe off leash with a small animal.
Do not test this by allowing a cat to run past an unleashed dog. Use physical separation, a leash and professional guidance while you learn how the individual dog reacts.
Herding dogs: controlling movement can become chasing or crowding
Herding breeds were developed to influence where animals move. Staring, circling, blocking, heel-nipping or repeatedly pursuing a cat can be an expression of that movement-control pattern, even when the dog is not trying to injure the cat. From the cat’s perspective, persistent crowding is still stressful and can provoke a defensive scratch or bite.

A herding dog may be a workable match if it can disengage, settle and follow cues. Provide alternative outlets—structured training, scent work, appropriate exercise and calm enrichment—so the cat is not treated as a moving job.

Size does not eliminate prey behavior. AKC notes that small or toy dogs may chase cats too. A small dog can injure a cat, and a cat can seriously injure a small dog with a defensive strike. Evaluate arousal and impulse control rather than assuming that a smaller body means a lower risk.
Why does my dog chase my cat?
Chasing can be prey-related behavior rather than “hatred.” A moving cat may activate a sequence of orienting, stalking, pursuit and grabbing. Other dogs chase because movement is exciting, because herding behavior is being rehearsed, or because the cat’s retreat has become a rewarding game. The motivation can be difficult to identify in the moment, so manage the behavior as a safety issue regardless of the dog’s intention.

Each successful chase can strengthen the pattern: the dog experiences the rush of pursuit, and the cat learns that the dog is dangerous. Interrupting after the dog is already sprinting is much harder than preventing access, controlling the environment and rewarding calm observation.
- Do not punish the cat for hissing, swatting or running away. Those are distance-increasing signals.
- Do not rely on verbal control alone when the dog is highly aroused. Use doors, gates, a leash and distance.
- Record triggers such as window sightings, feeding time, narrow hallways or a cat jumping from furniture. Changing the setup may remove more risk than repeating a cue.
- Get qualified help if the dog has grabbed, injured, pinned or repeatedly cornered the cat, or cannot disengage behind a barrier.
Can dogs and cats live together?
Yes. Many households succeed, but peaceful cohabitation is built through gradual exposure and reliable management—not a single face-to-face meeting. AKC guidance recommends beginning with separation and scent work, moving to protected visual contact, then conducting short, leashed meetings. Some pets adjust to one another’s scent in a few days; reaching a point where they can be left together may take weeks or months, and there is no guaranteed timeline.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems1. Create separate territories first
- Set up a permanent cat-only area. Use a room or section the dog cannot enter, with litter, food, water, resting places and hiding options. Add elevated shelves, a cat tree or other secure escape routes so the cat never has to pass the dog to reach essentials.
- Keep the dog and cat physically apart. Closed doors let each animal adjust to unfamiliar sounds and smells without a chase. Maintain this separation whenever you cannot actively supervise.
2. Build positive associations with scent
- Exchange scent items. Move bedding or a cloth carrying each animal’s scent into the other’s area. Pair investigation with treats or another reward, and stop if either animal becomes distressed.
- Feed on opposite sides of a closed door. Begin far enough away that both animals eat normally. Gradually move bowls closer over repeated meals only while both remain relaxed. If either stops eating, increase distance again.
3. Add protected visual contact
- Use a gate or screen door. A sturdy pet gate, stacked gates or a screen can allow sight while preventing contact. The barrier must not have gaps through which a dog can push a muzzle or a cat can become trapped.
- Reward calm looking and looking away. Feed the dog for a loose body, soft eyes, sitting or turning back to you. Keep sessions brief and end before excitement escalates. A barrier helps, but it does not make an unsafe pairing safe.
4. Hold short, controlled room meetings
- Choose a neutral, uncluttered room. Keep the dog on a leash and allow the cat to choose whether to approach, remain elevated or leave. Never carry the cat toward the dog or hold it in place.
- Practice known cues. Ask for “sit,” “stay” or “leave it” at a distance where the dog can respond. Reward immediately for calm behavior. If the dog stares, stiffens, lunges, whines intensely or ignores food, increase distance and return to barrier work.
- Repeat brief sessions. Several calm sessions are safer than one long encounter. End while both animals are still coping well.
5. Increase freedom only after reliable safety
- Keep supervision continuous. Do not leave the pets alone together until the dog consistently disengages from the cat and the cat can move freely without being pursued. Use closed doors or a secure gate when you are sleeping, away or distracted.
- Keep escape options permanent. Even after progress, preserve the cat-only area and elevated routes. A cat needs the ability to retreat, eat and use the litter box without negotiating with the dog.
How to screen a dog before bringing it home
Ask a shelter, rescue or breeder for specific examples, not just “Is this dog good with cats?” Useful questions include:

- Up to 3 Month Supply - with 180 salmon oil treats per jar you keep your pet healthy while not spending a fortune on overpriced supplements. Best value.
- Is Your Dog a Picky Eater? We stick to simple formulas rich in natural flavors, that could tempt a fussy eater. No hassle with pills, powder, tablets or capsules.
- Has the dog lived with cats, and could you describe ordinary daily interactions?
- What does the dog do when a cat runs, climbs or vocalizes?
- Has the dog ever chased, pinned, mouthed or injured a small animal?
- Which cues work when the dog is excited, and who has observed that response?
- Can the dog settle behind a gate or in a crate without escalating?
- Is a controlled, staged introduction possible before adoption or placement?
Look for consistency across settings. A dog that is calm beside one stationary cat may react differently when a cat darts through a hallway. Conversely, a dog that is initially excited but quickly softens, accepts food and follows its handler may improve with structure. Ask for the animal’s full known history, while recognizing that an unknown history is uncertainty—not proof of danger or safety.
Warning signs that mean slow down
Pause progression and restore distance if the dog repeatedly fixes on the cat, stalks, trembles with arousal, lunges at a barrier, ignores high-value food, vocalizes intensely or cannot respond to familiar cues. Also pause if the cat hides continuously, stops eating, avoids the litter box, swats whenever the dog is nearby or has no route to safety. These signs indicate that the current step is too difficult.
If there has been contact involving a bite, grab, pin or injury, separate the animals and consult a qualified veterinary behaviorist or force-free behavior professional. A trainer can help with impulse control and management, but serious aggression or predatory behavior warrants specialized assessment. Do not arrange a “test” by letting the dog chase the cat to see what happens.
Common mistakes that undermine a safe match
- Using breed reputation as a guarantee. Breed history helps identify questions; it cannot predict an individual’s behavior.
- Assuming friendly behavior means safe behavior. A dog may be sociable with adult dogs yet dangerous to a fleeing cat.
- Allowing one chase. A single pursuit can frighten the cat and reinforce the dog’s behavior.
- Removing the cat’s exits. Blocking high spaces or placing food and litter in shared traffic areas leaves the cat no control.
- Advancing by calendar. Move forward because behavior is calm and reliable, not because a certain number of days has passed.
- Leaving them together too soon. Early success under supervision does not prove that an unsupervised encounter will be safe.
What a responsible decision looks like
Choose the dog whose observed behavior, training response and history fit your household—not the dog whose breed label sounds reassuring. For a chase-oriented individual, the honest question may be whether you can maintain permanent separation and enrichment rather than whether training can guarantee friendship. If the dog cannot disengage and the cat cannot live freely, do not force cohabitation.
There is no published figure that can tell you the odds of success for a particular breed or pair. A careful match, protected introduction and lifelong escape options give you the information and control needed to make a humane decision for both animals.
