Before taking your dog camping, confirm that the campground and park allow dogs where you plan to go, then make sure your dog can handle the trip. Pack familiar food, enough drinking water, restraint and ID, waste bags, bedding, towels and basic first aid. Rules and needs vary by site, route, season and dog, so verify local requirements and adjust your plan before leaving.
Before you go: check the rules and your dog’s readiness
Confirm where dogs are allowed
Check the specific campground and managing park for rules covering campsites, trails, facilities, boardwalks, waterways and backcountry areas. A dog-friendly campground may still have dog-free trails or other restricted places. Verify leash length, tether use, waste disposal and food-storage requirements rather than assuming one policy applies everywhere. The National Park Service notes that some parks require a six-foot leash; that is not a universal standard. See the NPS guidance on camping with pets and Recreation.gov’s tips for camping with a dog, then check current rules for your destination.
Match the trip to the dog
Consider your dog’s health, fitness, temperament, the trip’s duration and the route’s difficulty. Think through activities that do not permit pets and whether your itinerary would leave the dog unattended for long stretches. If the dog cannot safely manage the route or the plan depends on leaving them alone, choose a different trip or make other arrangements. Ask your veterinarian which vaccinations and flea, tick and heartworm protection are appropriate for the destination.
Prepare for the specific site and season
Check the forecast, trail and campsite conditions, water availability, local hazards, fire restrictions and emergency information. Find out how food—including pet food—must be stored. Keep a backup plan in case weather, access or your dog’s response makes the itinerary unsafe. The NPS pre-trip camping guidance recommends considering the setting, season, difficulty, duration, hazards and emergency preparation.

For tent camping, try a night in the tent at home or in the backyard. It gives you a chance to see whether your dog can settle and whether there is room for everyone’s sleeping arrangements. Check that collar identification is secure and current; microchip registration can provide an additional way to reunite you if your dog gets lost. Trim nails beforehand if that suits your dog and the trip.
Dog camping packing checklist
- Food and water: Pack your dog’s usual food and enough drinking water for the dog and planned route. Bring extra food if exertion or trip length calls for it. There is no single water quantity that fits every dog and outing, so plan for the conditions and access to refill water.
- Bowls: Bring food and water bowls. Lightweight or collapsible bowls save space, especially on hike-in trips.
- Leash, collar and ID: Bring a leash and a well-fitting collar with current identification; include a rabies tag where relevant. Check local leash rules before choosing a leash or tether for camp.
- Campsite restraint: If site rules allow, pack a suitable tether and ground stake. Do not assume you can tie a tether to a tree, or that a stake or tether is permitted.
- Waste bags: Bring enough bags to pick up and pack out dog waste. Recreation.gov cautions that pet waste can contaminate drinking water.
- First aid: Pack a basic kit for minor scrapes. Ask your veterinarian what dog-specific medical supplies, if any, make sense for your pet and destination.
- Towels and bedding: Towels can dry your dog or protect the car and tent. Familiar bedding or a blanket may help your dog settle.
- For hikes: A portable water dispenser can make water easier to offer on the trail.
Adjust the checklist to the trip
| Trip type | What to prioritize |
|---|---|
| Car camping | Space can make it practical to bring heavier bowls, extra towels and additional food. Still plan for drinking water, restraint, supervision and the site’s storage rules. |
| Hike-in or backcountry camping | Pay close attention to pack weight, water carried, route demands, pet access and how far you may be from veterinary care. Confirm dogs are allowed on the route and at the destination before setting out. |
For either trip, compare destinations by dog access, leash and tether rules, water availability, waste disposal, wildlife risks, trail access and current conditions. A particular bowl design or leash length is not right for every dog or destination.

At camp and on the trail: keep your dog safe
- Restrain and supervise: Keep your dog leashed or otherwise restrained as local rules require, and keep them under supervision. Recreation.gov advises against leaving a dog unattended at the campsite. Never leave a dog in a closed vehicle.
- Watch for ticks and distress: Check your dog for ticks and keep an eye on comfort as weather changes. If conditions or your dog’s response make the plan unsafe, use your backup plan.
- Manage waste and food: Pick up and pack out waste. Store pet food as the campground requires and do not feed wildlife.
- Respect wildlife and restricted areas: Keep dogs out of dog-free areas and away from wildlife. In bear country, the NPS warns that dogs can attract bears and that interactions may lead to conflict.
- Be considerate: Keep barking and other disturbance under control so nearby campers can enjoy their sites.
For additional guidance on restraint, tick checks, vehicles and bear-country risks, see the NPS camping safety guidance for your stay.
