Kids can turn a few household materials into a recognizable 3D turtle with a domed shell, paper legs, a head, and a tail. These ten adaptable ideas use clean plastic bottles, paper-towel or gift-wrap tubes, and—only if you have one—a washed foam egg carton. Skip cardboard egg cartons: Crayola’s Consumer Craft Safety Guide says they cannot be sufficiently cleaned for crafts.

Most projects need only paper, glue, and markers or paint. An adult should prepare any cut or pierced materials, especially plastic. Crayola’s guide states, “Adult supervision is required for any arts & crafts project.”

Before you start: choose safe materials

  • Skip cardboard egg cartons. Crayola’s Consumer Craft Safety Guide says they cannot be sufficiently cleaned for crafts. It permits foam cartons after washing with hot, soapy water; use only a clean foam carton, and have an adult cut it.
  • Choose the right cardboard tube. Use a paper-towel or gift-wrap tube, not a recycled toilet-paper tube. The guide cautions that toilet-paper tubes may be contaminated.
  • Prepare plastic safely. Use only a clean plastic bottle that never held bleach or another hazardous chemical. An adult should do any cutting: cut plastic can leave sharp edges. Check and smooth the prepared piece before a child handles it.
  • Keep small parts away from children under 3. Draw or paint eyes and other details instead of using loose eyes, beads, or tiny decorations. Follow the age guidance on art-supply packaging.
  • Keep tools and supplies simple. Paper, glue, markers or paint, and scissors are enough for many designs. Adults should handle difficult or risky cutting and any hole-punching.

For an easy paper-based starting point, Crayola’s Color Wonder Mess Free Turtle Craft demonstrates coloring, cutting out a turtle body, and gluing paper pieces in place. Its listed materials include Color Wonder markers and paper, glue, and scissors. The builds below adapt familiar craft methods; they are ideas, not ten source-tested patterns.

Foam egg-carton turtles

These ideas are for washed foam cartons only, not cardboard. An adult should separate and prepare the cups before the child decorates them.

Paper-tube turtles

Use a paper-towel or gift-wrap tube rather than a recycled toilet-paper tube. A paper-towel-roll project such as Crayola’s Cardboard Tube Mermaid Craft shows a transferable approach using a tube, cut paper pieces, and glue.

8. Standing tube turtle

Materials: Paper-towel or gift-wrap tube, green paper, card or construction paper, glue, markers.

  1. Wrap the tube in green paper and glue it in place.
  2. Draw and cut a broad shell, head, four legs, and tail from paper.
  3. Glue the shell to the front of the tube and attach the head, legs, and tail around it.
  4. Draw eyes and a shell pattern. An adult should make any difficult cuts.

9. Tube turtle puppet

Materials: Paper-towel or gift-wrap tube, paper, glue, markers.

  1. An adult cuts a short section from the tube if a smaller body is wanted.
  2. Cover or decorate the tube as the turtle’s body.
  3. Add a wide paper head, four legs, and a tail with glue.
  4. Draw the face and shell pattern. Keep decorations broad and securely attached.

10. Tube-and-paper turtle parade

Materials: Paper-towel or gift-wrap tubes, paper, card, glue, markers or paint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Prepare one tube body for each turtle; an adult handles any cutting.
  2. Make paper heads, legs, and tails, then attach them to the tubes.
  3. Give each turtle a different paper shell pattern and draw its face.
  4. Arrange the turtles on a sheet of card as a parade or simple scene.

Which turtle craft should you choose?

Build Base Adult preparation Child’s main task
Paper turtle starting point Paper and card Help with scissors as needed Color, assemble, and glue paper pieces
Foam-carton ideas Washed foam carton Wash and cut cups Decorate shells and assemble paper bodies
Bottle ideas Clean plastic bottle Cut and check edges Decorate prepared shell pieces and assemble
Tube ideas Paper-towel or gift-wrap tube Cut tube sections if needed Wrap, decorate, and add paper parts

For a low-prep activity, start with paper: it avoids preparing a container and follows the paper-shape approach shown in Crayola’s turtle craft. A tube adds a ready-made body; bottle and foam-shell versions need adult preparation before decorating.
