Dewclaws are the extra digits and nails higher up a dog’s leg. Most dogs have one on each front leg, where it is usually attached by bone and ligament; rear dewclaws are less common and can be attached only by skin, sometimes in pairs. They may help with gripping, traction, or wrist stability, but their role varies and remains debated. The practical priorities are to keep each dewclaw nail from becoming overgrown, watch for snagging or injury, and make any removal decision with a veterinarian who has examined that individual dog.

What exactly is a dewclaw?

A dewclaw is a dog’s additional digit, positioned higher on the leg than the four primary toes. Its nail is the claw you can usually see on the inside of the front leg, or farther up the back or side of a rear leg. It is not simply an extra piece of loose skin: front dewclaws are generally part of the limb’s musculoskeletal structure.

Almost all dogs are born with a single dewclaw on each front leg. Rear dewclaws occur less often. Some are attached by skin alone, while others have stronger internal connections. A dog can have one rear dewclaw on a leg or two, and the arrangement can differ between the left and right sides.

Feature Front dewclaws Rear dewclaws
Typical location Higher on the inside of each front leg Higher on the rear leg, with location varying by dog
Typical occurrence Almost all dogs have one per front leg Less common; may be single or paired
Typical attachment Usually connected by bone and ligament May be attached only by skin, although anatomy varies
Examples of breeds associated with paired rear dewclaws Not applicable Great Pyrenees, Briards, Beaucerons, and Icelandic Sheepdogs

Because attachment differs, two dogs’ dewclaws can look similar from the outside but behave very differently if they are caught on something. A veterinarian can determine whether a digit has a firm skeletal connection or is relatively loose.

What purpose might dewclaws serve?

No single function explains every dewclaw. Veterinary experts cited by the American Kennel Club describe several plausible uses, while acknowledging that the exact purpose is debated and may depend on the dog’s anatomy, breed, movement, and activities.

Gripping objects

A dog may use a front dewclaw to help hold a toy, chew, or bone against the rest of the paw. This is a possible advantage during manipulation, not a requirement for every dog to perform those activities.

Traction on challenging surfaces

Dewclaws may contact the ground when a dog changes direction, climbs, or moves over a slippery surface. That contact could add purchase in some situations. It should be understood as a potential contribution rather than a guaranteed benefit in every gait or environment.

Stabilizing the wrist during movement

Front dewclaws are often connected to the limb by bone and ligament. Their position may help support the wrist when a dog turns or lands. The AKC’s chief veterinarian, Dr. Jerry Klein, summarizes the uncertainty this way: “There are a variety of ways dewclaws may help a dog accomplish different tasks.”

Activity-specific use

The AKC overview names agility as an example in which a dog may use a dewclaw to steady itself on equipment. That is an attributed example, not evidence that every agility dog needs every dewclaw or that an inactive dog gains the same benefit.

How to check your dog’s dewclaws

Include dewclaws whenever you examine the rest of the nails. They sit higher than the main toes and can be easy to overlook, especially when hair covers them.

  1. Look at every leg. Check both front legs and then inspect the rear legs for single or paired dewclaws.
  2. Examine the attachment and surrounding skin. Note whether the digit appears firmly held or unusually loose, and look for swelling, redness, discharge, a torn nail, or a change in position.
  3. Assess the nail’s length. Because a dewclaw often does not touch the ground, it may not wear down as the other nails do. A nail that catches on your finger is a practical sign that it needs attention.
  4. Watch your dog’s reaction. Pulling away, licking the area, limping, or guarding the leg can indicate discomfort.
  5. Record changes. If one dewclaw suddenly looks longer, bent, loose, or different from the opposite side, arrange veterinary advice rather than waiting for it to snag.

Routine dewclaw care

Why trimming matters

Long dewclaw nails can catch on bedding, vegetation, carpets, crates, or other surfaces. A nail may split or break when it snags, and an overgrown nail can curve into the skin. These problems are preventable when dewclaws are included in ordinary nail maintenance.

Choosing a tool

Tool style What it is Practical consideration
Scissor-style trimmer A cutting tool that closes around the nail Useful when you prefer a direct cut and can control the angle
Grinder-style tool A rotating abrasive surface that gradually shortens the nail Allows incremental shortening but requires the dog to accept the sound and sensation
Guillotine-style trimmer The nail passes through an opening before a blade cuts it Requires steady positioning of the dewclaw and the tool

There is no universally best style. The important point is that the tool is suitable for a dog’s nail and that the dewclaw is not skipped. If you have not been shown how to trim safely, ask a veterinarian or veterinary technician to demonstrate the technique on your dog.

A simple maintenance routine

  1. Set up calmly. Choose a stable place and have the appropriate dog nail trimmer or grinder ready before handling the foot.
  2. Find the dewclaw first. Separate surrounding hair if necessary so you can see the entire nail and the skin at its base.
  3. Shorten only as needed. Follow the technique demonstrated by your veterinary professional and stop if your dog shows pain or the nail appears abnormal.
  4. Repeat the inspection on all four legs. One front dewclaw may be a different length from the other, and rear dewclaws may be present even when you have not noticed them.
  5. Schedule help when cooperation is poor. A veterinary team can perform the trim and show you how to handle future checks.

Signs of a dewclaw problem

Contact a veterinarian when a dewclaw is injured, loose, painful, or otherwise concerning. Seek advice promptly for a torn or broken nail, bleeding, swelling, marked redness, discharge, a claw that is digging into the skin, sudden limping, or repeated licking and chewing at the area.

What can cause trouble?

  • Snagging: A long nail or a loosely attached digit can catch on an object and tear.
  • Breakage: A nail that splits or breaks can be painful and may leave the dog reluctant to bear weight.
  • Overgrowth: A dewclaw that is not worn down can curve into nearby skin.
  • Underlying looseness: A rear dewclaw attached mainly by skin may move more than a firmly connected front dewclaw and can be more vulnerable to catching.

What a veterinarian may do

Depending on the injury and the digit’s anatomy, a veterinarian may trim or remove damaged material, address the dewclaw itself, and provide pain relief or antibiotics when indicated. The correct treatment depends on an examination. Do not attempt to remove a dewclaw, pull out a broken nail, or perform surgery at home.

Should a dog’s dewclaws be removed?

Removal is an individual veterinary decision, not an automatic part of dog ownership. The AKC guidance describes circumstances in which a veterinarian may recommend removal, particularly when a dewclaw is loosely attached and at risk of tearing. It also urges caution with front dewclaw removal because front dewclaws may contribute to limb or wrist stabilization.

The evidence summarized in the cited guidance does not establish a universal policy for elective removal, a single ideal age, or identical long-term outcomes for every dog. A sound decision considers the actual digit, the dog’s history, and the likelihood of future problems.

Questions for the veterinary appointment

  • Is the dewclaw attached by bone and ligament, or is it mainly a skin attachment?
  • Has this particular digit repeatedly snagged, torn, become infected, or caused pain?
  • Is the concern about a front or rear dewclaw?
  • What activities does the dog perform, and could the digit contribute to traction or wrist stability during those activities?
  • Would careful trimming and monitoring reasonably reduce the risk, or is the anatomy making recurrent injury likely?
  • What are the expected recovery needs and possible complications for this individual dog?
Decision factor Why it matters
Attachment A firmly connected front dewclaw is different from a loose, skin-attached rear dewclaw when assessing stability and snag risk.
Injury history Repeated tears or painful damage may change the balance between monitoring and removal.
Location Front and rear dewclaws have different typical anatomy and possible roles.
Activity Running, turning, climbing, or agility work may make traction and stabilization considerations more relevant.
Veterinary examination An external glance cannot reliably show the internal attachment or the safest option.

Breed and lifestyle differences

Breed tendencies explain why owners see different dewclaw patterns. Great Pyrenees, Briards, Beaucerons, and Icelandic Sheepdogs are associated with paired rear dewclaws, while many other dogs have no rear dewclaws at all. Even within a breed, individuals can differ in attachment, nail growth, and injury history.

Lifestyle also affects management. A dog that spends much of its time on soft ground may receive little natural nail wear, while a dog that turns quickly, climbs, or works around equipment may place different demands on its limbs. These observations help you decide how closely to monitor the nails; they do not prove that a dewclaw is beneficial or harmful in every case.

Common misunderstandings

“Every dewclaw is useless.”

That is too broad. Experts describe possible roles in gripping, traction, and wrist stabilization, although the importance of those roles varies and remains debated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Every dewclaw should be removed.”

Routine removal is not supported as a one-size-fits-all rule in the cited guidance. Removal may be considered for a loose, repeatedly injured digit, while front dewclaw removal is approached cautiously because of potential stabilizing function.

“A dewclaw will wear down like the other nails.”

Often it will not, because it may not contact the ground. It therefore needs the same inspection as the other nails and may need deliberate trimming.

“A loose dewclaw can be fixed at home.”

A loose or painful digit needs veterinary assessment. Home surgery or pulling at the attachment can worsen pain, bleeding, or infection.

A practical dewclaw checklist

  • Locate every front and rear dewclaw, including possible paired rear digits.
  • Inspect nails and surrounding skin whenever you check the other nails.
  • Trim a nail when it is overgrown or catches on your finger, using a suitable tool and a demonstrated technique.
  • Arrange a veterinary examination for looseness, pain, tearing, breakage, swelling, discharge, skin penetration, or limping.
  • Discuss anatomy, activity, previous injuries, and alternatives before considering removal.
  • Do not assume that a breed pattern or another dog’s experience determines what is right for your dog.

Key takeaway

Dewclaws are normal digits whose anatomy ranges from firmly connected front structures to sometimes skin-attached rear digits. They may assist particular movements, but their exact value is not identical for every dog. Consistent inspection and trimming prevent many problems; prompt veterinary care is appropriate for injury or looseness; and removal should follow an individualized veterinary assessment rather than a blanket rule.
