Teach “Drop it” by making release worthwhile: trade a toy for a treat, praise the release, then return the toy or resume play. Start with an easy object in a calm setting, add the cue as your dog lets go, and gradually ask for the release before showing the reward. If your dog already guards objects, get help from a qualified trainer or animal behavior professional before practicing.
What you need to teach “Drop it”
- A toy your dog enjoys but is not intensely protective of.
- Small treats your dog values, or a second toy that can serve as a trade.
- A calm place for a few easy repetitions during play.
No particular treat, toy, or practice schedule is required by the guidance here. Choose rewards you can offer safely without reaching toward a dog who is tense or guarding.

Teach the cue in gradual steps
1. Trade the toy for a treat
Start a brief game of tug or ball play. While your dog has the toy, bring a treat to their nose and say “Drop it.” When they release, praise them, give the treat as you pick up the toy, and then resume play. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) describes this kind of treat exchange in its “Drop It Training” lesson by Megan Maxwell, Ph.D., CAAB (2015).

2. Say the cue before the treat reaches the nose
After several successful exchanges, say “Drop it” as you reach for the treat rather than waiting until it is at your dog’s nose. Reward the release and make play available again. This helps the cue begin to predict the exchange instead of merely accompanying a treat already being presented.

3. Ask before showing the reward
Once your dog is releasing readily, give the cue before displaying the treat. Praise every successful release. Continue to use meaningful rewards: vary whether you deliver a treat, but do not stop food rewards abruptly. Renewed play can also reward the release.
4. Try a toy-for-toy trade if food is not compelling
Offer a second toy in exchange for the one your dog has. AVSAB’s example is to trade a second-favorite toy for the favorite, then return to play. Use an exchange your dog is happy to make rather than trying to take the toy by force.

5. Practice with other easy objects
When the exchange works during play, try it with a ball or another safe, low-pressure object. Increase the difficulty gradually; the cited lesson does not prescribe a fixed number of repetitions, timeline, or mastery threshold. Do not begin by testing the cue with a highly valued object or in a situation where your dog is already tense.

Existing resource guarding changes this from a basic cue lesson into a behavior-safety issue. The American Kennel Club advises consulting a trainer or animal behaviorist before starting drop-it exercises with a dog who guards objects. Choose a qualified professional, and follow their plan rather than trying to take the item yourself.

Wisconsin Humane Society’s trade-game guidance emphasizes watching body language and, in early approaches, tossing treats without touching the dog or the item. Avoid cornering your dog, prying an object from their mouth, or punishing a growl. If there is a bite risk, keep your distance and seek professional guidance.

AVSAB’s 2021 humane-training position recommends reward-based methods for all dog training, including behavior problems. Its position-statement index includes a 2025 board statement saying the 2021 position remains its current authoritative view. For “Drop it,” that means teaching a predictable, worthwhile exchange rather than forcing a release or using punishment.
