Ask the same practical questions of multiple candidates, check references and insurance, then arrange a meet-and-greet or supervised test walk before committing. Put the schedule, care instructions, backup plan, and emergency contacts in writing.
Start with what your dog actually needs
Before contacting candidates, write down the details that will affect a walk: your dog’s age, size, energy level, leash manners, reactions to unfamiliar people or dogs, and any health or mobility limits. Include routines or triggers a walker should know about. The American Kennel Club (AKC) advises owners to understand their dog’s behavior before choosing someone to walk them.

Be candid about challenges. A dog who pulls, is reactive around other dogs, tires quickly, or needs medication-related precautions may need a different pace or format than a dog who walks easily. The right match depends on the individual dog, not simply the walker’s general experience.
Where to find candidates—and how to screen them
Begin with referrals from dog owners and people familiar with local pet-care providers. The AKC also points readers to pet-sitter locators from Pet Sitters International and the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters. A directory or marketplace profile is a way to find a lead, not proof that a particular person is right for your dog.
#1 Best Overall
- Engineered for Ultimate Strength: Constructed from 1/2 inch diameter rock climbing rope, this heavy duty dog leash is distinctively durable and strong. It is designed to withstand the strongest pulls from large and energetic dogs, giving you peace of mind that your pup won't break free during walks
- Comfortable Padded Handle: Say goodbye to rope burn. Our soft, cushioned foam handle provides an amazing grip and protects your hands from sudden tugs. Enjoy longer walks and extended training sessions with total comfort, even if your dog is a puller
- Maximum Nighttime Visibility: Highly reflective threads are woven through the entire length of the rope (not just painted on), keeping you and your fur baby visible to passing cars and cyclists during early morning jogs or late-night strolls. Perfect for urban streets and low-light environments
- Tangle-Free 360° Swivel: Featuring a heavy-duty metal clasp that rotates 360 degrees, this ensures the rope never gets twisted or tangled, no matter how much your dog moves around. The zinc alloy hook is rust-proof and easy to clip onto any dog collar or harness in seconds
- Versatile for Any Activity: Park walks, trail hikes, or yard training. Offers ideal balance of freedom and control. Comes in 4ft, 5ft, 6ft lengths and 12 colors. 3/8" diameter suits small to medium dogs – lightweight and non-bulky. For medium and large dogs, choose 1/2" diameter
Interview more than one candidate and compare answers against the same needs. Ask who will actually walk your dog if you hire a service, and whether that person—not just a company representative—will meet you and your dog first. The AKC’s guide recommends treating a refusal to meet beforehand as a reason to consider another option.
Questions to ask before you hire
The AKC suggests asking direct questions about the walk, the provider’s experience, and practical protections. For example:
Rank #2
- Removable Zipper Pouch: Easily store and access your smartphone, keys, poop bags, dog treats in the removable zipper pouch. It’s a good add-on for the leash for training, walking, jogging, hiking training and running
- Double shock absorbers: Feature 2 shock-absorbers to help provide a bit of “give” in the leash. This can help reduce the amount of tugging both you and your dog will experience as you cruise down the road
- Durable clip - Enjoy a 2” heavy duty clip for added safety and handy D-ring to attach your favorite dog training clicker or dog poop bag holder.
- 2 Extra handles for extra control: Easily guide your pup on your runs through the park with the built in waist handle. Then switch to the amazing traffic handle when you need tighter control of your pet.
- Hand free waist wearing: Enjoy a waist dog running leash belt that lets you freely use your phone or read a newspaper without feeling restrained by your Dog's movements
- “Where will you walk my dog?”
- “Do you walk multiple dogs together or one at a time?”
- “How long will you spend with my dog on each walk?”
- “Are you experienced with dogs similar to mine?”
- “Are you licensed, bonded, and insured?”
- “Can you provide client references?”
- What pet-care training do you have, and how would you handle a situation likely to come up with my dog?
- What is your cancellation policy, and what happens if you are sick or otherwise unavailable?
Ask for references and contact them. Ask what insurance applies to the service and whether the walker has a screening process. Licensing, bonding, and credential requirements or terminology vary by location, so do not assume that a particular credential is legally required everywhere. A credential, background check, membership, or insurance claim is useful information to verify; none guarantees safe or suitable care.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse the meet-and-greet to judge the match
Watch how the candidate approaches and handles your dog, and notice how they respond to the dog’s signals. A capable walker should ask about the dog’s routine and needs rather than treating every walk as interchangeable. Consider a supervised test walk to see how the person manages the leash, pace, and any ordinary challenge you have described.

Experience matters, but it should be relevant to your dog. Bethany Stevens, owner of On the Move Pet Care in Rochester, New York, says that “to be a professional dog walker, you have to have experience working with animals of all types, breeds, sizes, and personalities,” as quoted in the AKC’s dog-walker guide. Ask candidates for examples that show how their experience applies to your dog; then use the meeting and test walk to assess the actual interaction.
Agree on the service before regular walks begin
Put the essentials in a written agreement so that you and the walker have the same expectations. Confirm:

- Days, arrival window, and walk duration.
- Usual route or walking area, and whether walks are solo or with other dogs.
- Fees, payment arrangements, and cancellation terms.
- How the walker will report that the visit happened and share any concerns.
- Who provides backup care if the walker is unavailable.
- How to reach you and what to do in an emergency.
Agree on suitable equipment for your dog and who supplies it. Ordinary walking supplies may include a collar or harness, leash, and cleanup bags; make sure the walker knows where the equipment and other essentials are kept. The written agreement should also spell out emergency arrangements, as the AKC recommends for pet-care services.
Give the walker a concise care sheet
Keep the information easy to find and practical to use. Include your contact details, your veterinarian’s contact information, relevant medication instructions, feeding instructions if applicable, and the location of the leash, treats, and cleanup supplies. Add clear emergency directions and confirm how the walker should reach you.

How to compare candidates fairly
Compare the service as well as the person. A polished profile or low quote cannot tell you whether the walker is reliable or suited to your dog. Consider each candidate on the same points:
- Experience with your dog’s size, age, energy, and behavior.
- Ability to read dog behavior and handle foreseeable situations.
- Walk location, duration, pace, and solo or group format.
- References, relevant training, insurance, and applicable local credentials.
- Schedule reliability, cancellation terms, and backup coverage.
- Communication after walks and emergency response.
- Price and exactly what the service includes.
There is no universal rate established by the cited guidance. Compare local quotes only after confirming that the duration, format, and included service are comparable.

If you’re considering an app or marketplace
Apps and marketplaces can help you discover candidates, but assess the individual walker just as you would someone found through a referral. Meet the person who will handle your dog, check references, and ask what screening and protection terms currently apply. Do not rely on older descriptions of a platform’s vetting or insurance as a statement of its current policy.
In an AKC article about walker and sitter apps, Pet Sitters International founder Patti Moran is quoted as saying, “It’s essential that convenience not override quality, and technology not undermine professionalism.” The practical point is to treat convenience as a way to find a candidate—not as a substitute for checking fit, care details, and reliability.
