Dog Eye Irritation: How to Tell When Entropion May Be the Cause

Entropion can make eyelid hair rub a dog’s cornea, causing squinting, tearing, and discharge. Learn why an exam is essential, how vets diagnose it, and when tacking or surgery may be needed.

If your dog is squinting, holding an eye partly or completely shut, tearing, or developing discharge, entropion is one possible explanation—but appearance alone cannot diagnose it. Entropion is an inward-rolling eyelid margin; hairs can then rub the cornea and conjunctiva, causing pain and injury. Other eye diseases produce the same outward signs, so arrange a veterinary examination rather than trying to correct the lid at home.

What entropion is

Entropion occurs when part or all of an eyelid edge turns inward. Eyelid hairs, eyelashes, or hair from the surrounding facial skin may touch the conjunctiva (the tissue lining the eyelids) and the cornea (the clear front surface of the eye). Every blink can drag those hairs across the eye, creating ongoing irritation.

The problem may affect one eye or both and may involve the upper lid, lower lid, or the inner corner near the nose. The amount of rolling can change with facial shape, muscle tension, pain, and the dog’s level of alertness. A lid that looks normal when a dog is relaxed can roll inward during a painful examination, while eyelid spasm caused by a painful eye can make entropion appear worse. A veterinarian therefore has to examine both the eyelid position and the eye underneath it. The VCA overview of eyelid entropion and the Merck Veterinary Manual describe this relationship and the potential for corneal damage.

Why an inward-rolling lid makes the eye look irritated

Contact between hair and the cornea stimulates pain and inflammation. The dog may blink forcefully, tighten the muscles around the eye, or produce extra tears to wash away the irritant. Continued friction can remove the cornea’s surface cells and develop into an ulcer. Longer-lasting disease may leave pigment, scar tissue, or, in severe cases, a perforation. Vision can be affected when the cornea becomes opaque or permanently scarred.

Entropion is not always the original source of the pain. A foreign body, infection, injury, or another corneal disorder can cause eyelid spasm, and that spasm can pull the lid inward. Conversely, a conformationally inward lid can create a secondary ulcer or infection. Distinguishing those pathways matters because treating the secondary irritation alone will not permanently change an anatomically abnormal lid.

Signs owners may notice—and what they cannot prove

  • Squinting or frequent blinking: a response to irritation or pain, but not specific to entropion.
  • Holding the eye shut: suggests significant discomfort and warrants prompt veterinary attention.
  • Excessive tearing (epiphora): tears may run down the face when the cornea is being rubbed.
  • Mucoid or other discharge: discharge can accompany irritation, infection, or a blocked tear pathway.
  • Redness or a rubbed-looking eye: inflammation may be visible in the conjunctiva.
  • Few obvious signs: some dogs, especially those with medial (inner-corner) entropion, show little dramatic discomfort even when the cornea is being contacted.

Because these findings overlap with ulcers, dry-eye disease, conjunctivitis, foreign bodies, trauma, and other eyelid disorders, do not use a photograph or a home “eyelid check” to label the condition. Tell the clinic which eye is affected, when the change began, whether it is constant, and whether discharge or rubbing is increasing.

When to arrange veterinary care

Make an appointment as soon as you notice persistent squinting, an eye held shut, repeated pawing at the face, or new tearing or discharge. Eye-surface injuries can worsen while a dog is waiting, and dogs often hide discomfort. A rapidly worsening appearance, obvious cloudiness, or severe pain should be treated as a same-day call to a veterinary practice. Do not wait for a lid to “grow out” without professional advice.

Until the examination, prevent rubbing if you can do so safely. A veterinarian may advise an Elizabethan collar, but the clinic should select the size and explain how to use it. Do not pull the eyelid outward, trim hairs close to the eye, or put human eye drops, leftover antibiotics, lubricants, or supplements in the eye unless a veterinarian has prescribed them for this dog.

How entropion develops

Developmental or conformational entropion

Some dogs are born with eyelid or facial anatomy that rolls the margin inward. Skin folds, a deep-set eye, excessive lid length, or an eyelid that lacks normal support can direct hair toward the cornea. The appearance may change as a puppy’s head grows, which is why a temporary approach may be considered in a young dog rather than immediate definitive surgery.

Pain-related or spastic entropion

A painful cornea can trigger blepharospasm—the involuntary tightening that narrows the eyelids. The spasm itself can produce temporary inward rolling. Treating the painful eye may allow the lid to return to a normal position; operating on a lid that is only secondarily spastic could be unnecessary.

Entropion after injury or scarring

Trauma, chronic inflammation, or scar contraction can pull an eyelid inward later in life. In these cases, the surgical plan may differ from the one used for a puppy with a conformational problem. The veterinarian must look for the inciting injury and assess how much healthy eyelid tissue remains.

How a veterinarian confirms the cause

Diagnosis generally starts with a complete eye and eyelid examination. The clinician observes the dog at rest and while blinking, checks the direction of the lid margin, and evaluates the cornea and conjunctiva for abrasions, ulcers, pigment, or scarring. The American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) explains that signs and examination establish the diagnosis, while anatomy and blink function help determine the underlying cause and treatment.

A fluorescein stain is commonly used in veterinary eye examinations to reveal a corneal ulcer; the clinician may also assess tear production, eye pressure, eyelid movement, and the position of nearby facial tissue. Sedation is not automatically required, but a frightened or painful dog may need medication so the eye can be examined safely and accurately. The NC State Veterinary Hospital ophthalmology service notes that clinical examination is central to diagnosis and that specialist input can help with complex anatomy and procedure planning.

Ask whether the observed rolling is primary entropion or a reaction to another painful eye problem, whether the cornea is already injured, and how growth or scarring affects timing. A veterinary ophthalmologist is especially useful when both lids are involved, the anatomy is unusual, a prior repair has failed, or vision-threatening corneal disease is present.

Treatment options depend on age, cause, and corneal health

Situation Approach a veterinarian may consider What the approach can and cannot do
Very young puppy whose facial shape is still changing Temporary eyelid tacking (stitches that roll the margin outward) Reduces hair-to-cornea contact while the puppy grows; it is not necessarily a permanent correction and may need adjustment or replacement.
Pain-related or spastic inward rolling Treat the painful eye and reassess the lid; temporary tacking may be used in selected cases Can resolve rolling caused by spasm if the underlying disease is corrected; persistent anatomical entropion will remain.
Established conformational entropion in a mature or near-mature dog Surgical correction of the eyelid margin and surrounding tissue Provides a more definitive change in lid position, but the exact technique and the possibility of additional surgery vary by anatomy.
Entropion caused by scar tissue or complex facial anatomy Individualized reconstruction, often with veterinary ophthalmology involvement Must address the scar or tissue tension as well as the inward turn; prognosis depends on existing corneal damage.
Corneal ulcer or secondary infection present Veterinarian-prescribed topical or systemic medication plus correction of the mechanical rubbing Medication protects and heals the cornea but does not cure an eyelid that remains incorrectly positioned.

There is no universal age at which every dog should have surgery. The decision balances ongoing growth, the severity of rubbing, corneal injury, and whether the lid is likely to improve after another problem is treated. The Merck guidance on animal eyelids notes that temporary stitches may be used in very young puppies, while established entropion commonly requires surgery. NC State likewise describes temporary tacking for growing dogs and surgical correction for chronic or recurring cases.

What temporary eyelid tacking involves

During tacking, a veterinarian places temporary sutures in the eyelid or nearby skin to evert (turn outward) the margin. The goal is to stop hair from touching the cornea while the puppy’s head develops or while a painful eye heals. The stitches are not a do-it-yourself treatment: incorrect tension can leave the lid exposed, create new irritation, or fail to protect the cornea.

The clinic will specify recheck timing and whether the sutures should stay in place, be adjusted, or be removed. A puppy may still need definitive surgery later if the conformational problem persists. Use any prescribed ointment or drops exactly as directed and keep the dog from rubbing the area; an Elizabethan collar is often used during recovery when the veterinarian recommends it.

What definitive surgery and recovery involve

Surgery removes or repositions a measured amount of eyelid or adjacent skin so the margin rests against the eye without rolling inward. The technique is chosen for the location and severity of entropion, the dog’s facial anatomy, and whether scarring or previous operations have altered the tissue. Overcorrection can leave the eye exposed, while undercorrection can allow rubbing to continue, so experienced planning is important.

After surgery, expect a protective collar, restricted face rubbing, and prescribed topical medication. Keep follow-up appointments even if the eye looks better; the surgeon needs to check the incision, lid position, and cornea as swelling subsides. Contact the clinic if the dog can repeatedly scratch the site, the eye becomes more painful, discharge increases, or the sutures appear displaced. Some dogs need a second procedure because growth, scar contraction, or residual anatomical imbalance changes the result.

Complications and outlook

Untreated, persistent hair contact can produce corneal ulceration, scarring, pigment deposition, or perforation. Existing scars may permanently reduce vision even after the lid is corrected. The severity of the corneal injury, not just the visible eyelid roll, is therefore a major part of the prognosis.

“With proper diagnosis and treatment, the prognosis is excellent for maintain comfort and a healthy, visual eye.” — American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists, Entropion

That statement describes dogs diagnosed and treated appropriately; it is not a promise that every eye will recover normal vision after long-standing disease. A veterinary ophthalmologist can explain the likely outcome when ulcers, pigmentation, perforation, or previous surgery are involved.

What published UK practice data show about recorded signs and care

The 2025 VetCompass analysis of 2019 records from UK primary-care practices included 1,540 entropion cases in which at least one clinical sign was recorded. In that dataset, discharge was recorded in 735 dogs (47.73%), epiphora in 426 (27.79%), and blepharospasm in 353 (22.92%). These are proportions of signs documented among those cases, not the prevalence of symptoms in all dogs or a prediction for an individual pet. The full study is available in Conformational eyelid disorders in dogs under primary veterinary care in the UK.

Recorded sign (2019 UK data) Dogs Percentage of 1,540 cases
Ocular discharge 735 47.73%
Epiphora (excess tearing) 426 27.79%
Blepharospasm 353 22.92%

Among recorded management plans in the same study, medical care appeared in 1,133 cases (59.44%) and surgery in 1,098 (57.61%). The categories overlap—some dogs received both medical care and surgery—so these figures are not competing treatment shares and should not be read as a recommendation.

How to prepare for the appointment

  • Note the first day you saw squinting, tearing, discharge, or face rubbing.
  • Record whether one eye or both are affected and whether signs vary during the day.
  • Bring a list of medicines, previous eye injuries, and earlier eye procedures.
  • Take a short video of intermittent blinking or lid rolling if the signs are not visible at the clinic.
  • Ask whether the cornea has an ulcer, whether the lid is primary or pain-induced, and what follow-up schedule is required.
  • Before leaving, confirm how to apply each medication, when a collar is needed, and which changes require an urgent call.

The practical answer to “Could my dog’s irritated eyes be entropion?” is yes, but only an examination can establish that diagnosis and identify the safest treatment. Prompt assessment protects the cornea while the veterinarian determines whether the problem is temporary, developmental, pain-related, or in need of surgical correction.
