There is no single dog food established in the available sources as appropriate for kidney disease, arthritis, and every kind of skin problem at once. The right choice depends on your dog’s kidney-disease stage, the exact skin diagnosis, joint and weight needs, appetite, and overall nutritional status. Have your veterinarian set those priorities before changing food or adding supplements.
Why the diagnoses—and kidney stage—matter
“Skin disease” is not a single diet indication. A suspected food reaction may call for a controlled limited-antigen or hydrolyzed-protein diet trial. A non-food-related inflammatory skin condition may have different nutrient considerations. Those approaches are not interchangeable, so clarify the diagnosis before looking for a food that claims to help skin.

Kidney-disease nutrition also depends on stage and the individual dog’s laboratory results and nutritional status. AAHA identifies phosphorus control as a priority and describes protein restriction as something to consider at IRIS stage 2 and recommend at stage 3. That does not mean every dog with early kidney disease should have protein restricted; a veterinarian needs to interpret the stage and the whole clinical picture. See AAHA’s disease-management nutritional guidance.
AAHA’s guidance for therapeutic diets advises clinicians to consider all nutrient concerns when a patient has multiple diseases or when staging affects nutrient needs, as it can with chronic kidney disease. In practice, a food chosen for one diagnosis should not be assumed to support the others.

How skin, joint, and kidney goals can differ
If a food reaction is suspected
For a suspected cutaneous adverse food reaction, AAHA describes limited-antigen approaches that may use a novel or hydrolyzed protein and limited ingredients. Trial success can be affected by ingredients and other factors, so the veterinarian should guide the diet trial and what the dog can eat during it.
If the skin condition is not food-related
For non-food-related inflammatory skin conditions, AAHA lists considerations such as omega-3 fatty acids, the omega-6-to-omega-3 ratio, vitamins A and E, zinc, and antioxidants. The relevant nutrients and amounts can differ by condition; “skin support” on a label does not establish that a food suits a particular diagnosis.

For osteoarthritis and body condition
AAHA lists EPA and DHA, possible glucosamine and chondroitin, antioxidants, and lower energy density when a dog is overweight or obese as considerations for osteoarthritis nutrition. The amount supplied by a complete daily ration may not be the amount a veterinarian considers appropriate, but adding supplements independently can complicate kidney and skin management. High omega-3 supplementation can cause gastrointestinal disturbance.
For kidney disease
Renal diets and nutrient decisions are stage-dependent, with phosphorus management and cautious protein decisions among the concerns. A formula that appears to address mobility or skin should not be presumed appropriate for your dog’s kidney stage.

What combination foods are documented
A UC Davis-hosted Royal Canin veterinary diet comparison, marked August 2023, lists two separate canine renal-support approaches—not one formula documented for all three conditions:
| Documented approach | What the comparison describes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Chronic kidney disease with concurrent joint conditions | Low phosphorus, restricted amounts of high-quality protein, and joint-support nutrients including collagen. | That the formula is suitable for a particular skin diagnosis or every dog with kidney disease and arthritis. |
| Chronic kidney disease with adverse food reactions | Low phosphorus, restricted amounts of high-quality protein, hydrolyzed soy protein, and skin-barrier support. | That the formula supports osteoarthritis. |
The comparison is dated August 2023; ask your veterinarian to confirm current formulation and local availability. Its listings support two-condition combinations, not a verified all-three solution. The document also reproduces manufacturer-reported figures for other nutritional approaches, but those figures do not establish outcomes for a food addressing kidney disease, joints, and skin together.

How to compare options with your veterinarian
Bring the information needed to weigh trade-offs rather than choosing by a broad “renal,” “joint,” or “skin” label. VCA notes that dogs with osteoarthritis may also have conditions such as skin or kidney disease and recommends that the veterinarian set nutritional priorities; a veterinary nutritionist may help identify a suitable nutrient profile or product. See VCA’s guidance on arthritis and nutrition for dogs.

- Renal status: What is the kidney-disease stage, and what do the relevant laboratory results and nutritional assessment indicate about phosphorus and protein?
- Joint and weight goals: What EPA/DHA and calorie profile is appropriate, and is weight management needed?
- Ability to eat the plan: Can your dog eat the food consistently, given appetite, body and muscle condition, life stage, treats, medications, and supplements?
- Evidence for the exact combination: Does the product information cover your dog’s species and the specific conditions at issue, and are the formulation and local availability current?
What to bring to the appointment
Share your dog’s diagnoses, kidney staging information and relevant laboratory results, current food and treats, supplements and medications, appetite, and recent weight or body-condition changes. If the priorities conflict or your dog will not eat an appropriate commercial diet, ask whether referral to a veterinary nutritionist would help.
