When a deployed military working dog is injured, care starts with the handler and nearby medical support, then escalates to veterinary personnel and facilities as the dog’s condition requires. The unit coordinates transport to the best available care; there is no single route that applies to every force or deployment.
Who provides the first care in the field?
Handlers are trained to give point-of-injury and basic care, and nearby medics or other medical personnel may help within their training and availability. That does not mean every unit has a veterinarian beside it. The first priority is to address immediate threats and stabilize the dog enough for further assessment or movement.

Accounts from different forces illustrate how this can work without establishing a universal procedure. In an Israeli Defense Force (IDF) experience described in a U.S. Army-hosted lessons report, handlers used aid bags after a threat was neutralized if they were not injured themselves. The company medical team then assessed and treated the dog, with remote veterinary guidance for some care. U.S. Army personnel, separately, have described training handlers and medics in point-of-injury and basic care before evacuating a more serious case. The Army’s KFOR account and the IDF lessons report concern different systems, not interchangeable standard operating procedures.

How does care escalate to veterinary treatment?
U.S. Army veterinary doctrine describes treatment levels by capability. Not every deployed location has every level, and the actual route depends on what is available and what the dog needs.

Veterinary Role 2: resuscitation and stabilization
Under U.S. Army ATP 4-02.55, Veterinary Role 2 care is veterinarian-directed resuscitation and stabilization. It may include emergency procedures or forward resuscitative surgery.
Veterinary Role 3: advanced clinical and surgical care
The same ATP describes Role 3 as advanced veterinary clinical and surgical care, with short-term hospitalization not to exceed 72 hours. After treatment, a dog may return to duty, remain hospitalized, or be stabilized for evacuation to a higher veterinary role, as needed.

How is an injured dog transported?
U.S. Army guidance treats evacuation as a unit responsibility, not as an automatic dedicated ambulance flight. FM 4-02, the Army Health System field manual, says an injured or ill military working dog may be evacuated by any available means. The using unit is responsible for arranging movement. Dedicated air or ground MEDEVAC assets may be used depending on mission priority and availability, and the handler should accompany the dog when possible.
The destination and timing depend on the dog’s condition, distance to veterinary care, mission circumstances, transport options, and the capabilities of facilities along the route. The dog’s care chain is distinct from the human casualty chain, even when transport assets or medical coordination overlap.

What can distance and scarce surgical care mean?
A May 2026 U.S. Army report on Kosovo Force (KFOR) shows how geography can shape the response. Dogs and veterinarians were dispersed across Kosovo, and U.S. Army Reserve Maj. Christine Bui described response times of one to two hours. Camp Bondsteel was the only location in Kosovo with surgical veterinary capability, according to that report. Those details describe that deployment, not a general military standard.
In March 2026, U.S. veterinary personnel, Italian handlers and a veterinarian, and U.S. aviation elements rehearsed moving a dog from Camp Novo Selo toward surgical care. The exercise addressed a practical handoff: handlers and veterinarians have to coordinate with the people who can move the dog and the facility able to treat it. The Army report quotes Bui: “It’s important for us to not only train the K-9 handlers and medics on how to provide point of injury and basic care to the dogs, but also prepare ourselves in case we ever need to MEDEVAC a K-9 for a more serious injury.”

How are treatment decisions and records handed off?
In the IDF experience covered by the Army-hosted April 2026 lessons report, handlers or company medical personnel contacted veterinary officers for telemedicine guidance. Veterinary officers determined the destination and transport, which could involve military or civilian veterinary facilities. The report describes two active-duty veterinary officers in the IDF system discussed there; that staffing figure should not be taken as a description of U.S. or other forces.

It identifies DD Form 3073, the Canine Tactical Combat Casualty Card, and DD Form 3074, the Canine Treatment and Resuscitation Record. These are recommendations in the report about the IDF experience; they do not establish that every force follows the same documentation or referral process.

What do reported injury patterns and equipment observations show?
The IDF lessons report identifies lacerations and paw pad injuries as frequent non-battle injuries in its account, and blast injuries and falls as conflict-specific injuries. It does not establish system-wide survival or effectiveness rates for the full chain of care.
The report says booties were used in Gaza to mitigate paw injuries, but strap placement caused pressure sores between digits in some cases, and alternative placement was being explored. It also describes suspected aural hematomas associated with canine earmuff use. These are reported observations, not proof that the equipment causes those outcomes generally or that any particular product is approved or endorsed.
