The RHS and BBC Radio 2 Dog Garden was designed for the 2025 RHS Chelsea Flower Show by Monty Don and Jamie Butterworth, then installed at Battersea’s London centre. Its useful lesson for home gardeners is to plan outdoor space around a dog’s real activities—exploring, playing, training, exercising and resting—while managing wear, shade, water and plant access.
What the RHS Battersea garden was designed to do
Battersea describes the garden as a place for dogs to play, train, exercise or sleep in the shade. The Royal Household described it as a tranquil space away from the kennel environment. The RHS annual report says it was the first RHS Chelsea garden designed by Monty Don. Those details make the project a starting point for thinking about how a garden can serve dogs, not a plan that every home should copy.

As Battersea Chief Executive Peter Laurie put it in the organisation’s 14 July 2025 release: “With so many animals arriving at our centres each year, it is vital that we create calm and enriching environments where they can exercise, train and relax.” The project sources describe intended uses, not measured outcomes for dogs.

Before changing the garden, notice where your dog runs, sniffs, rests, digs or follows people. Use those habits to shape routes and planting beds: a frequently used path may need durable surfaces, while a quiet corner can become a resting spot. This is a practical way to adapt the project’s mix of play, training, exercise and rest to your own space.

You can also use these fences as garden decorations to add charm, elegant touch to any outdoor space
Create a sensory route
Battersea and the RHS suggest combining scents and surfaces. Their examples include rosemary, basil, thyme and lemon balm, alongside grass, play-grade bark chip and paving. A short route or corner with more than one surface can add variety; supervised treat or toy games can make it useful for training and exploration.
Choose materials with your dog’s habits in mind, and keep an eye on how the dog uses them. A surface that suits one garden or dog may not suit another.

Protect high-traffic planting
For areas dogs pass through or play in, Battersea and the RHS name sedges, shorter grasses, catmint and lavender as robust planting examples. They are suggestions, not guarantees: a plant’s performance depends on the site and the dog. Put more delicate beds away from the busiest routes or isolate them where needed.

Make room for shade and water
Plan a shaded place to rest and accessible water for warmer weather. Battersea and the RHS give field maple, hawthorn, camellia and deutzia as examples of plants that can contribute shade. Their suitability depends on your climate, available space and the plants’ mature size, so assess those locally before planting. Add a water bowl or station where your dog can reach it.

Manage plant risks and garden access
Start with an inventory of plants already in the garden before deciding what to remove or fence off. Battersea warns that any plant may cause side-effects if ingested and that some animals may react to plants commonly considered safe. Its examples of potentially toxic plants include alliums such as onions, garlic and leeks, as well as foxgloves and azaleas. A plant described as dog-friendly is not therefore guaranteed safe if eaten.
If you keep plants that may pose a risk, use a secure barrier the dog cannot get through, under or over. Choose fence dimensions and construction to suit your dog, garden and installation; a product category such as garden fence panels is not an endorsement of a particular model. If you suspect ingestion or notice symptoms, contact a veterinarian.

Choose a design that fits your dog and garden
When deciding between possible layouts or materials, compare the factors that affect daily use and safety:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Access: Can your dog reach the areas you intend it to use, and are there routes for escape, digging or entry to restricted planting?
- Durability: Will surfaces and planting tolerate your dog’s actual activity and traffic patterns?
- Shade and water: Is there a shaded resting place and reachable water where your dog spends time?
- Maintenance and appearance: Does the design fit the upkeep you can provide and the look you want?
- Plant isolation: Can existing plants of concern be securely separated from the dog?
Battersea and the RHS also suggest using yellow and blue flowers—including cornflowers, pansies, asters and sunflowers—as a visual planting layer, based on their statement about dogs’ colour vision. Treat that as their design advice rather than a promise that a particular colour scheme will suit every dog or garden.

What to take from the project
The RHS and BBC Radio 2 Dog Garden shows how a garden can combine activity, scent, varied surfaces, shade and calm resting space. For a home, the practical approach is to build around the dog’s routine, use durable materials where needed, provide water and shade, and manage access to plants. Adapt the ideas to your site and dog rather than trying to reproduce the show garden.
