Stem cell therapies for pets are being studied in several new areas, but promising results are not the same as an established treatment. In the United States, the FDA says no animal cell, tissue, and cell-based products (ACTPs) are FDA-approved. A 2025 study of cats with severe, treatment-resistant chronic gingivostomatitis is a notable recent clinical finding; kidney disease, urinary incontinence, musculoskeletal and neurologic conditions, and canine stem-cell research platforms are also under study.
What is new in veterinary stem cell treatment?
Recent work ranges from clinical studies in animals with naturally occurring disease to laboratory platforms that may support future therapies. The findings are not interchangeable: they concern different species, conditions, cell sources, study designs, and outcomes.

| Area | Recent finding | What it does—and does not—show |
|---|---|---|
| Feline chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS) | In a 2025 clinical field study summarized by the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) on March 30, 2026, 46 cats with refractory FCGS received intravenous allogeneic uterine-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) after partial- or full-mouth extraction. | AAHA reported improvement in quality of life within two weeks and that 76% of cats were considered treatment successes at day 90, based on owners’ overall response. This is a result in a specific group and does not establish a cure or predict outcomes for other cats or products. |
| Kidney disease in cats and dogs | A review published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science on March 27, 2026, synthesized 19 studies of MSC therapy for companion-animal kidney disease. | The review described treatment as generally safe, with most adverse events infusion-related and transient, but found variable efficacy evidence. In feline chronic kidney disease (CKD), some measures, including glomerular filtration and quality of life, trended toward improvement, though statistical significance was uncommon. Canine acute kidney injury (AKI) findings were heterogeneous and largely came from experimental models. |
| Canine urinary incontinence | AAHA describes investigation of autologous skeletal muscle progenitor cells for urethral sphincter mechanism incompetence (USMI), a cause of urinary incontinence in dogs. | This is an area of investigation, not evidence that a treatment is established or routinely available. The overview does not provide a clinical success rate. |
| Canine musculoskeletal and nervous-system conditions | The FDA’s public field-study list includes a long-term Cornell study of autologous adipose- or bone-marrow-derived MSCs. Cornell’s June 2024 report describes tracking safety and efficacy across conditions including osteoarthritis, tendinopathy, dysplasia, nerve pain, and related bone, joint, or muscle problems. | Listing identifies an investigational study, not an approved treatment. The FDA says safety and effectiveness have not yet been determined for products on the list. |
| Canine induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) | AAHA describes a 2025 study of a species-matched canine vitronectin culture substrate for canine iPSCs. | This is laboratory-platform work, not a therapy offered to pet owners. Nearer-term uses include reproducible cell culture, disease modeling, and drug discovery. |
AAHA also reports that Gallant is seeking FDA approval for an allogeneic feline MSC product for FCGS, with donor cells collected during routine spay procedures and manufactured as a ready-to-use product. A company’s effort to seek approval is not approval or proof of commercial availability. FDA’s current ACTP page says no such products are FDA-approved.

MSCs are a varied group of cells. They may be sourced from adipose tissue, bone marrow, umbilical cord blood, or peripheral blood. A treatment may use a patient’s own cells (autologous) or cells from a donor (allogeneic), and products differ in how cells are collected, processed, characterized, dosed, and delivered.

- [FUNCTION] QIYADIN pet recovery cone is a professional and effective tool for postoperative cats and dogs. It prevents them from licking and biting incisions and helps them recover faster and better. It can also be used in pet grooming and skin disease treatment.
- [MATERIAL] It is mainly made of high-quality translucent soft and flexible plastic, it can be rolled into a cone to Keep your pet's head and body separate. Its edges are covered with cotton flannel, which makes it comfortable for pets to wear.
- [SIZE and WEIGHT] 9 sizes from XXXS to XXXL for choices. You can always find the right size for your pet. You can first measure the size of your pet, then compare it with our size chart, finally choose the appropriate size. Its weight is very light. Pets can move normally with it.
- [USAGE METHOD] Put the inner ring of this pet recovery collar close to the pet's neck and roll it into a cone, then stick the Velcro on. The large area of Velcro makes the cone firmly fixed on the pet's neck. You can fine tune the size by adjusting the adhesive area of the Velcro. Make sure it is in a comfortable state, not too tight to hurt the pet's neck, and not too loose to escape.
- [DURABLE] This pet recovery cone is difficult to be damaged by scratching of dogs and cats. It can be used repeatedly and has long service life. But it's plastic. Please stay away from fire!
Culture-expanded MSCs undergo laboratory processing. Bone-marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) and adipose-derived stromal vascular fraction (SVF) do not involve culture expansion and may shorten the time from collection to treatment. The Merck Veterinary Manual says controlled clinical-trial evidence is insufficient to support benefit from BMAC or SVF in veterinary patients. It also notes there is no consensus veterinary protocol: tissue source, timing, dose, and adjunct therapies vary.
A 2025 comparative review found that canine MSCs have been studied across more tissue types than feline MSCs, whose studies have concentrated on adipose tissue and bone marrow. The review describes differences between species and tissue sources in cell proliferation, cartilage-forming potential, and surface markers; donor age can also matter. Differences in sampling sites, culture methods, and marker panels make studies difficult to compare. The label “MSC” alone therefore does not tell an owner whether two products are biologically or clinically comparable.

How strong is the evidence so far?
The recent studies answer different questions. The feline FCGS field study reports outcomes in a defined group after dental extractions; the kidney review combines studies with varied methods and results; and some canine work is still experimental or focused on developing research tools. A finding in one species, disease, cell source, or delivery route cannot be assumed to apply to another.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor kidney disease, the 2026 review identifies inconsistent cell characterization, nonstandard doses, short follow-up, and few studies of naturally occurring disease as important limitations. A report that treatment was generally safe in the studies reviewed is not a guarantee of safety for an individual animal, nor does it establish clinical benefit.

- NOT JUST RECOVERY AFTER SURGERY Pets often lick their wounds. We increased the diameter of the cat cone to prevent this, even for lower limb wounds, promoting better recovery. It is also suitable for in vitro deworming, nail trimming, and grooming
- SOFT WATERPROOF MATERIAL This e-collar is made of waterproof PP cotton, keeping your pet's wound dry for better recovery. The soft material prevents scratches to pets and furniture. The smooth outer fabric ensures comfort, even in summer
- FESTIVAL DECORATION This cat cone can be used as a soft pillow or Christmas or Halloween decoration. The neck rope has been designed with an open knot, and if the rope is too long or there is a risk of the pet breaking free, it can be knotted
When comparing a study or a proposed treatment, look for:
- The species and specific disease studied.
- Whether cells came from the patient or a donor, and the tissue source.
- How the cells were prepared and characterized, and the dose and delivery route.
- Whether the study used a controlled design and what outcomes it measured.
- How long animals were followed and what adverse events occurred.
- The product’s regulatory status and whether the evidence applies to the animal being treated.
Are stem cell treatments for dogs FDA approved?
In the United States, the FDA currently says no ACTPs are FDA-approved. Products consisting of cells or tissues intended to diagnose, cure, mitigate, treat, or prevent disease—or to affect an animal’s structure or function—generally meet the definition of a new animal drug and are regulated as such. FDA evaluates safety, effectiveness, manufacturing, and labeling as part of the approval process.

The FDA’s public list of ACTP field studies is not a list of approved therapies. The agency says participation in a listed study is voluntary, listings depend on voluntary sponsor consent, and the list may not be comprehensive; it is updated quarterly. A study’s appearance on the list means the product is investigational, not that FDA has established its safety and effectiveness.
Do not confuse an FDA risk-based review with drug approval. For example, in April 2024 the FDA made a risk-based decision about PrecisePRP Canine, a canine platelet-rich plasma product—not a stem-cell product—finding that the developer did not need to submit an approval application before marketing. FDA says it may revisit a risk determination if new information changes its understanding of a product’s risks.

What risks should pet owners discuss?
FDA warns that unapproved cell and tissue products may have unknown safety and effectiveness. Its pet-owner guidance identifies possible harms including disease transmission from donor animals, contamination-related infection, inflammatory pain or swelling, and hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis and death. The risks depend on the particular product and procedure; a veterinarian can help assess them alongside the animal’s condition and other options.
FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine has emphasized that “the ultimate proof rests in obtaining high quality data from well-conducted, well-controlled, and well-designed scientific studies.” For an individual pet, a plausible biological explanation or an encouraging result in another group of animals is not a substitute for evidence about the exact product and condition.
Questions to ask a veterinarian before considering treatment
- What exact cell or tissue product is proposed, and is it intended for this species and diagnosis?
- Is it autologous or allogeneic, where do the cells come from, and how are they processed and quality-controlled?
- Is the treatment part of an FDA-listed clinical study or otherwise investigational? What does that status mean for access and oversight?
- What controlled evidence supports its use for this condition, and what outcomes and follow-up period were studied?
- What adverse events will be monitored, and what should prompt an urgent call or visit?
- What conventional treatment options remain, and how will you measure whether this intervention is helping?
Discuss any proposed treatment with a veterinarian rather than trying to obtain or administer a cell product yourself. A referral to a veterinary specialist or university hospital may help when the condition is complex or the treatment is investigational.
