Dogs are pregnant for about 63 days from ovulation. Veterinary references commonly place normal canine gestation at roughly 62–64 days, although a broader range appears when counting from mating because breeding and conception do not necessarily happen on the same day.
That distinction is the key to estimating a due date. A veterinarian can establish a more useful timeline with ovulation testing, pregnancy examinations, ultrasound, blood testing and, later, radiographs. Use the figures below as planning guidance, not as a substitute for an examination of the individual dog.

How long are dogs pregnant?
The cleanest answer is approximately 63 days from ovulation. Merck Veterinary Manual describes canine pregnancy as about 62–64 days, while VCA Animal Hospitals gives a 57–65-day range with an average of 63 days. These figures refer to different ways of counting and should not be treated as a guaranteed delivery date.

The American Kennel Club describes approximately 58–72 days from the first time the female allowed breeding, compared with an average of 63 days from ovulation. A mating may occur before ovulation, and sperm can remain viable in the reproductive tract. Merck therefore cautions that “predicting the timing of delivery can be difficult because the date of breeding does not always match the date of conception.”

For a practical estimate, record every mating date, ask your veterinarian whether ovulation timing was monitored, and use the relevant biological starting point rather than counting automatically from the first breeding.
Why the due date changes depending on what you count from
Several dates can appear in a breeding record. They describe the same pregnancy from different biological anchors, so the numbers are not contradictory.
| Starting point | Typical figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Ovulation | About 63 days | The clearest general estimate when ovulation has been identified. |
| Luteinizing hormone (LH) surge | About 65–66 days | An earlier hormonal marker used in reproductive timing. |
| Initial significant progesterone rise | About 64–66 days | Another veterinary timing reference; the exact day depends on how the rise was measured. |
| First time the female allowed breeding | About 58–72 days | A wide window because mating can precede ovulation and conception. |
| General clinical range | About 57–65 days | VCA’s range, averaging 63 days; the counting convention and individual dog matter. |
If a breeder gives you only a mating date, do not turn it into an exact appointment on day 63. Give your veterinarian all breeding dates and any hormone-testing results so the estimate can be narrowed appropriately.
How veterinarians confirm a dog pregnancy
No single test answers every question. Some methods indicate whether pregnancy is present; others show fetal development or help count puppies. Timing also varies by test and by the individual dog.
| Method | Useful timing described by veterinary sources | What it can tell you |
|---|---|---|
| Uterine palpation | Approximately day 21 | A veterinarian may detect pregnancy-related uterine changes by examination. |
| Relaxin blood test | Commonly around days 30–35; one Merck reference discusses a commercial assay after approximately days 22–27 | Detects relaxin associated with pregnancy. The earliest useful day depends on the particular assay and reference. |
| Ultrasound | Reliably around days 25–35 | Confirms pregnancy and allows assessment of developing fetuses and viability. |
| Radiographs | After about day 45 | Can show mineralized fetal skeletons. Radiographs taken more than 55 days into pregnancy are best for determining litter size. |
These windows are general guidance, not instructions to test at home. Your veterinarian may choose a different day based on the suspected ovulation date, the dog’s health, the test used and the clinical question. A negative result obtained too early may not settle whether conception occurred.

Why a later radiograph may be useful
Ultrasound is useful for confirming pregnancy and evaluating fetal development, but it is not the preferred method for counting every puppy. Once fetal bones are sufficiently mineralized, a radiograph can provide a better estimate of litter size. Merck identifies examinations performed after about day 55 as the best timing for that purpose. Even then, counting can be imperfect, so discuss what the image can and cannot establish with the examining veterinarian.
What happens late in pregnancy
Late pregnancy is when preparation for whelping becomes practical. The American Kennel Club describes a fall in rectal temperature as one sign that labor may be approaching. Merck’s whelping guidance reports that, in most dogs, rectal temperature falls to a mean of 37.1°C (98.8°F), with a reported range of 36.7–37.8°C (98.1–100°F), approximately 8–24 hours before whelping.

Temperature readings vary between dogs, measurement technique and timing. A reading cannot confirm pregnancy, establish the exact number of puppies or guarantee that labor will begin within a particular hour. If you monitor temperature, ask your veterinarian how to take and record readings safely and which change should prompt a call.
Using a thermometer responsibly
A digital rectal thermometer for dogs can be an optional monitoring tool during the final stage of pregnancy. Use it only as your veterinarian advises, keep a written log, and do not delay veterinary care because a reading appears normal. A single measurement is less informative than a consistent pattern interpreted alongside the dog’s examination and expected dates.
Preparing for whelping
Preparation should focus on a clean, stable, supervised space and a veterinary plan. The sources support setting up a whelping area and arranging veterinary help; they do not identify one universally suitable box, layout or product.

- WARM AND COMFORTABLE - The dog whelping box is made of polyester, the fabric is soft and breathable, providing a safe birthing environment for the mother dog, a comfortable living environment for the puppies, and convenient centralized management.
- EASY TO INSTALL - The whelping box comes with instructions, no tools are required, and it can be installed in a short time. It is easy to disassemble and carry, and can be used indoors and outdoors.
- STURDY AND STABLE - The dimensions of the whelping pen are 36 x 36 x 19 inches, and the diameter of the bottom suction cup is 6.2 cm, which ensures good grip. The birthing box is not easy to move or overturn, and it is stable and safe.(Please note: This size may not be suitable for larger dog breeds.)
- EASY TO CLEAN - The whelping box for dogs comes with a urine pad, which is highly absorbent and can keep the inside of the birthing box clean and tidy. It can be reused many times after cleaning to keep the floor dry.
- INTIMATE DESIGN - It comes with a puppy collar to distinguish puppies, and there is a zipper door on one side. The zipper is smooth and easy to open and close, making it easy for dogs to enter and exit.
- Choose the location with your veterinarian. The area should be appropriate for the dog’s size, the expected litter and your ability to supervise. Discuss temperature, cleanliness, access and how you will separate the mother and puppies if professional advice requires it.
- Prepare a suitable whelping area. A puppy whelping box may be one option, but fit, stability, ease of cleaning and suitability for supervised use matter more than a particular brand or design. Do not assume a product is safe merely because it is marketed for puppies.
- Organize monitoring supplies. Keep the veterinarian-approved thermometer, clean bedding and any instructed records in one place. Follow professional guidance on what materials are safe around newborn puppies.
- Write down the reproductive timeline. Record every mating date, hormone-testing date if available, examination findings and the estimated ovulation date. This prevents a single uncertain date from controlling all decisions.
- Keep an emergency veterinary contact available. Know which clinic to call, how to reach it outside normal hours and how to transport the dog if your veterinarian advises an urgent visit.
The veterinary sources do not establish a universal shopping list or endorse a specific whelping-box design. Before buying equipment, compare whether it fits the dog and expected litter, can be cleaned easily, remains stable and can be used in a supervised whelping space.
How to build a realistic due-date plan
Use a range-based plan rather than one fixed day.
Step 1: Start with the best biological anchor
If ovulation was monitored, begin with approximately 63 days from ovulation. If you have an LH-surge or progesterone record, your veterinarian can apply the corresponding timing convention. If you know only when mating occurred, label the estimate as uncertain and use the broader mating-based window.
Step 2: Schedule confirmation at a useful window
Ask about palpation near day 21, relaxin testing in the appropriate assay window, or ultrasound around days 25–35. The goal is not merely to obtain a positive result; it is to choose the method that answers your immediate question at a time when the result is dependable.
Step 3: Plan late-pregnancy imaging
If knowing litter size will affect preparation or delivery planning, discuss a radiograph after day 45, with timing later than day 55 considered best for counting according to Merck. The veterinarian will decide whether imaging is appropriate for the dog.
Step 4: Begin whelping preparations before the final window
Set up the supervised area, confirm your contact plan and review temperature monitoring before the expected delivery period. Do not wait for a temperature change to begin finding a clinic or assembling the space.

Step 5: Recheck the estimate with your veterinarian
Breed, litter size, individual health, ovulation timing and clinical findings can all affect how an individual pregnancy progresses. If the dog’s dates, examination or behavior do not fit the working estimate, call the veterinary team rather than extending the countdown on your own.
When a mating-date countdown is misleading
Counting 63 days from the first mating can be wrong in either direction. A female may allow breeding before ovulation, and viable sperm may remain present until eggs are released. Multiple matings can also make the “conception day” impossible to identify from the calendar alone. That is why a reported 58–72 days from the first accepted breeding is compatible with an average of 63 days from ovulation.
Likewise, a test performed before its useful window may not detect a developing pregnancy. A negative early result should be interpreted with the veterinarian who selected the test, not treated as definitive without considering timing.
Questions to discuss with your veterinarian
- Was ovulation tracked, and which date should anchor the estimate?
- Which pregnancy-confirmation method is appropriate for this dog and when?
- Would late radiography help estimate litter size or delivery planning?
- How should temperature be measured, recorded and interpreted?
- What whelping-area arrangement is suitable for the dog and expected litter?
- Which clinic and phone number should be used if labor or the dog’s condition becomes concerning?
These questions turn a general 63-day figure into an individualized plan. General timing information cannot diagnose pregnancy, predict an exact birth hour or replace veterinary care.
