What to Do When a Duckling Is Separated From Its Mother

A duckling alone is not necessarily abandoned. Check for danger, avoid unnecessary handling, and contact local wildlife professionals when it is hurt, rejected, or trapped.

First check whether the duckling is trapped, visibly injured, or in immediate danger. If it is alone in a safe, open place, leave it where it is and observe quietly from a distance: being by itself does not prove it has been abandoned. If you know where its own family is and a reunion can be attempted safely, place it near its siblings within the mother’s hearing and watch from a distance. Call your local wildlife agency or a permitted wildlife rehabilitator if the duckling is hurt, rejected, orphaned, or in danger.

Choose the safest response

Situation What to do
Alone, but not trapped or in immediate danger Leave it in place, keep your distance, and seek local wildlife advice if you remain concerned. Utah DWR advises not moving an apparently separated duckling unless it is trapped or in danger.
Its own mother and siblings are located, and a safe reunion is possible Follow local expert guidance. Place the duckling close to its siblings, within the mother’s hearing, then move away and observe.
Injured, ill, rejected, genuinely orphaned, or trapped Contact your local wildlife agency or a permitted or licensed rehabilitator promptly. Ask them how to proceed and whether temporary containment is needed.

If the duckling is alone but safe

Do not assume that a mother has abandoned it just because she is out of sight. Avoid chasing, picking up, or moving the duckling, and do not try to guide it toward water. Utah’s Division of Wildlife Resources says to leave an apparently separated duckling alone unless it is trapped or in a dangerous place. There is no universal waiting period established by the official guidance cited here, so do not rely on a set number of minutes or hours; ask your local wildlife agency or rehabilitator for advice specific to the situation.

Utah DWR Migratory Game Bird Coordinator Jason Jones put the advice plainly: “If you find a duckling on the ground that looks like it’s been separated from its parents, don’t move it or try to put it in water.” The guidance makes an exception for a duckling trapped in a storm drain or otherwise in danger. Utah DWR, “Found a baby bird on the ground? Here’s what to do” (March 31, 2026).

How to attempt a reunion with its own family

If you can identify the duckling’s own mother and siblings, and the route is safe, Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife advises placing the duckling close to its siblings where the parent can hear it. Then retreat far enough that you are not keeping the family away and watch for acceptance. Wildlife Victoria also recommends monitoring from a distance in its local guidance.

Do not put the duckling with an unrelated brood. Wisconsin DNR warns that an unrelated mother may reject and harm it. If the original family cannot be located, or the parent does not accept the duckling, stop trying and contact a rehabilitator rather than making another placement attempt yourself. Guidance can differ by region: Washington DFW discusses trying another brood, while Wisconsin DNR warns about unrelated families. For a wild duckling, prioritize its known family and ask a local professional before considering any alternative.

When to call for professional help

Call a local wildlife agency or permitted or licensed wildlife rehabilitator if the mother is known to be dead or not caring for the duckling, if it is rejected, or if it appears sick or injured. Washington DFW lists drooping wings, shivering, lethargy, and a predator attack as reasons to call promptly. Do not attempt a risky rescue from traffic, a storm drain, or another confined or hazardous area; contact the relevant wildlife agency, municipality, or rehabilitator for help.

The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service also directs people who find injured or orphaned wildlife to seek appropriate local help: U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, “What to do if you find a baby bird, injured or orphaned wildlife”.

If an expert tells you to pick it up temporarily

Pickup is for short-term safety while you follow professional instructions, not a plan to raise a wild duckling at home. If advised to contain it, use a suitable, well-ventilated box or carrier lined with clean soft cloth or paper towels. A suitable container already on hand is enough; buying a carrier is not necessary.
