A dog’s heat cycle is the recurring reproductive process in an unspayed female. The visible “heat” period usually includes proestrus, when signs begin, and estrus, when she can accept mating and become pregnant. Timing varies widely: averages are useful for orientation, not for deciding when contact with male dogs is safe. The practical rule is to keep an in-heat dog securely separated from intact males until the cycle has clearly ended, and to ask a veterinarian about any suspected mating, breeding plans or spaying decision.
What “heat” means in dogs
Owners use heat, in season and estrus as though they mean exactly the same thing. In veterinary terminology, the estrous cycle has four stages: proestrus, estrus, diestrus and anestrus. Proestrus and estrus are the stages owners usually notice as the heat period. Estrus is the receptive stage: the female may stand for a male and pregnancy is possible.

Merck Veterinary Manual describes the stages using physical and behavioral signs, hormone changes, vaginal-cell examination and other physiologic changes. A dog’s outward appearance cannot establish an exact fertile date. Discharge may change, swelling may be subtle and behavior is not identical in every dog, so a calendar estimate should never be used as a contraception method.
The four stages of the canine estrous cycle
| Stage | What happens | Typical timing reported by veterinary references |
|---|---|---|
| Proestrus | The vulva starts to enlarge and bloody discharge may appear. Male dogs may be strongly interested, but the female is generally not yet receptive. | About 9 days on average; Merck reports a range of 2 days to 3 weeks. |
| Estrus | The female is receptive to mating. Discharge often becomes lighter or straw-colored, and the vulvar tissues may soften. Pregnancy can occur. | About 9 days on average; Merck reports 3 days to 3 weeks. VCA describes a typical 9 days with a range of 2 to 24 days. |
| Diestrus | She becomes unreceptive, discharge diminishes and vulvar size recedes. Hormonal changes continue whether or not she is pregnant; signs of a false pregnancy can develop. | Length is variable and depends on the individual reproductive cycle. |
| Anestrus | The reproductive system is relatively quiet before the next cycle. | Duration and the interval before the next heat vary substantially. |
The ranges above come from clinical references, not a guarantee for an individual dog. A broad “three-week heat” expectation can be useful for planning, but the complete cycle is not always exactly 21 days. Merck reports that the interval between cycles can range from 4 to 13 months.

Signs that a dog may be in heat
The first visible clues are often vulvar swelling and vaginal discharge. Discharge may begin as red or bloody and become thinner, pinker or straw-colored as the cycle progresses. The amount can be heavy, very light or difficult to see, particularly in a dog that cleans herself frequently.
- Enlarged or swollen vulva
- Bloody discharge that may later lighten
- More frequent urination or urine marking
- Increased attention from male dogs
- Changes in behavior, such as restlessness, clinginess, irritability or unusual interest in other dogs
- Tail or body-position changes when approached by a male, especially during estrus
These are possible signs, not a checklist every dog must show. Some females have obvious discharge and swelling; others have a subtle or “silent” heat. A male dog’s sudden interest can be an early practical warning even when the physical signs are easy to miss.
How long does heat last, and how often does it happen?
There is no single schedule that fits every dog. Merck’s averages place proestrus near nine days and estrus near nine days, but the reported ranges extend from a few days to roughly three weeks for each stage. VCA gives estrus a typical duration of nine days and a range of two to 24 days. The visible discharge may stop before fertility has ended, so a cleaner appearance is not proof that mating is safe.

Many dogs cycle more than once a year, but the interval can be shorter or longer. Merck lists a cycle interval of 4 to 13 months. Breed, body size, age, health and individual biology all contribute to variation. Keep a dated record of swelling, discharge and behavior for your veterinarian, but do not use that record to calculate a guaranteed “safe day.”
When can pregnancy happen?
Pregnancy is possible during estrus, when the female is receptive. Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract, so mating does not have to occur on the day ovulation is assumed to happen. VCA notes that pregnancy can occur even when the dogs do not remain tied together.
A mating tie is the temporary swelling that can hold dogs together. Its absence does not rule out ejaculation, sperm transfer or pregnancy. Likewise, a change from bloody to pale discharge does not identify the final fertile day. If an intact male has had access to an in-heat female, treat pregnancy as possible and contact a veterinarian promptly for advice specific to the dogs, timing and local treatment options.

How to prevent an unwanted mating
Separation is more reliable than watching for a particular discharge color or behavior. During the entire period in which heat is suspected:
- Use a leash outdoors. The American Kennel Club quotes board-certified theriogenologist Dr. Fran Smith recommending vigilance and keeping an unspayed female on leash as the most effective approach to preventing unwanted pregnancy.
- Keep her physically apart from intact males. Use closed doors, secure gates and supervised handling; do not rely on a shared yard or a male dog’s obedience.
- Avoid situations where dogs mingle freely. Arrange walks and care so that an intact male cannot approach her unexpectedly.
- Continue precautions after discharge changes. Fertility does not end at the first sign that bleeding is lighter or finished.
- Call your veterinarian after suspected mating. Do not attempt home fertility tests or give reproductive medication without veterinary direction.
For planned breeding, a veterinarian can assess the cycle with an examination, hormone testing and vaginal cytology. Those tools are used to estimate timing; they are not a reason to assume that a visual calendar works for every dog.
Managing discharge and keeping her comfortable
Dog diapers, whether disposable or reusable, can help contain discharge on bedding and floors. They are cleanup products, not contraceptives: a diaper does not prevent a male from mating with a female and should never be treated as a barrier against pregnancy. Check the garment regularly, keep the skin clean and dry, and follow the product’s care directions. The available guidance does not establish that one diaper brand, material, fit or absorbency is best, so choose a correctly fitting product and monitor your dog’s comfort.

Provide a calm routine, fresh water, normal opportunities to exercise safely on leash and a place where she can rest away from other dogs. Extra attention or temporary behavior changes can be normal, but a dog that appears unwell needs veterinary advice rather than an assumption that every symptom is “just heat.”

Spaying prevents pregnancy and future estrous cycles. A veterinarian may perform an ovariohysterectomy, removing the ovaries and uterus, or an ovariectomy, removing the ovaries. The best timing is an individual medical decision, not a universal age rule. Merck advises weighing disease-prevention benefits against risks that vary with breed and type.

Discuss your dog’s age, breed or size, health, previous cycles, living arrangements and whether breeding is planned. Ask what timing your veterinarian recommends and what preoperative care, recovery and monitoring involve. If a dog has already entered heat, the clinic can explain the safest scheduling options for that individual case.

False pregnancy and the period after heat
During diestrus, hormonal changes occur whether or not conception happened. Some females develop signs of a false pregnancy, such as mammary enlargement, nesting or mothering behavior. These signs do not prove that she is pregnant. If pregnancy is a concern, or if behavior or physical changes worry you, have a veterinarian evaluate her rather than trying to diagnose the cause at home.
When to contact a veterinarian
Veterinary advice is appropriate when you need individualized help with cycle timing, planned breeding, an accidental mating or the decision and timing of spaying. Contact the clinic promptly after possible mating because options and monitoring depend on how long ago contact occurred and on the dog’s health.
Also seek veterinary assessment if the discharge, odor, behavior or general condition seems abnormal for your dog, or if she appears ill. Unspayed dogs remain at risk of reproductive disease, including pyometra; vigilance after heat matters because not every serious problem looks like a textbook cycle. A veterinary team can determine whether findings fit a normal stage, false pregnancy, pregnancy or illness.

Write down the date you first notice swelling or discharge, changes in color or amount, urination or marking, interactions with male dogs and the date signs resolve. Bring the record to appointments. It can help your veterinarian recognize your dog’s pattern, but it cannot replace examination or testing when pregnancy prevention or breeding precision matters.
The safest interpretation is simple: treat the entire suspected heat as a pregnancy-risk period, use secure separation and leash control, and involve your veterinarian whenever the timing, health or reproductive plan is uncertain.
