Choose a memorial that fits the way you want to remember your dog
Some people want a tangible keepsake; others prefer a private ritual, a creative project, or an act of kindness in their dog’s name. You can also do nothing right away. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine emphasizes that there is no single right way to honor a pet.

- At home: Arrange an urn near a favorite photo, collar, ID tag, or toy, or make a scrapbook of pictures and memories.
- In the garden: Place an engraved or painted rock in a favorite spot, or plant a flower or tree. Check local rules before considering burial.
- As a keepsake: If you want something to carry or wear, consider a keychain, jewelry, ornament, or other item designed to hold ashes, hair, or whiskers.
- Through words or art: Write a letter to your dog, collect stories from people who knew them, or make art or music inspired by them.

- In a meaningful place: If you have ashes and wish to scatter them, choose a place that matters to you and confirm that scattering is allowed there.

Understand cremation and burial options before making plans
If you want your dog’s ashes returned, ask the provider about individual or private cremation and confirm exactly what the service includes. The ASPCA advises arranging individual/private cremation when an owner wants ashes as a remembrance.

Burial rules vary by location. Burial on public land is typically illegal, and rules for private property can also differ. Check with your local authorities before making arrangements; a pet cemetery or memorial park may be an alternative.
Make remembrance shared or private
You might prefer a quiet moment alone, or you may find comfort in inviting others to remember your dog with you. Ask friends and family to share a favorite story, create a photo scrapbook together, or hold a small gathering if that feels welcome. There is no need to make the loss public or formal if that is not what you want.

Children can be included with honest, age-appropriate conversations. Drawing a picture, writing a note, choosing a photo, or telling a favorite story can give a child a way to take part without requiring them to grieve in a particular way.
Give grief time, and seek support when you need it
Grief is individual: feelings may change from day to day, and there is no prescribed timeline or single “normal” response. Cornell recommends patience and self-kindness. A memorial may offer a way to express love, but it does not have to make grief disappear.

Cornell also lists university and community support options.
