Dog mobility exercises should match the reason your dog is having trouble moving. If your dog has a new or unexplained limp, do not start a routine: a limp can reflect pain or weakness, and the right exercise depends on the diagnosis and stage of healing. For dogs with osteoarthritis, a veterinarian may recommend controlled, low-impact activity as part of a broader care plan.
Should a limping dog exercise?
Not until you know what is causing the limp and whether activity is safe. Problems can involve different body structures or the nervous system, so a general exercise routine cannot identify the cause or set a safe dose. Cornell advises veterinary assessment when a limp is severe, sudden, worsening, or has lasted more than a day or two: what to expect when taking your limping dog to the veterinarian.
If your dog has had surgery, an acute injury, or a specific exercise restriction, follow the treating veterinarian’s instructions rather than general advice for osteoarthritis. Ask whether exercise is appropriate now and whether referral to a veterinary rehabilitation practitioner would help.
What mobility exercises may be appropriate?
These options are not interchangeable. The treating veterinarian should choose them based on your dog’s condition, abilities, limitations, and healing stage. A rehabilitation plan may also need adjustment as your dog progresses.

| Activity | What it may offer | Key limits |
|---|---|---|
| Controlled leash walks | Low-impact movement with pace and surface you can manage; may suit some dogs with osteoarthritis. | Have the veterinarian set duration and pace for a dog with an unexplained limp, recent surgery, acute injury, or other restriction. |
| Swimming | A low-impact activity Cornell lists as an option for some dogs with osteoarthritis. | Suitability depends on the individual dog. Do not assume unsupervised water exercise is safe for a dog with weakness, fear, or breathing concerns. |
| Low-pole obstacle or cavaletti work | Clinician-selected work may encourage joint flexion and proprioception (awareness of body position). | Use only when prescribed and set up with professional guidance; stop if your dog seems sore or tired. |
| Three-legged stands | A clinician-selected exercise can shift weight and challenge balance, coordination, core strength, and leg strength. | Shifting load may be unsuitable for a painful or injured limb. Ask which leg, if any, is safe to unload. |
| Range-of-motion exercises | Cornell includes these among possible components of rehabilitation for osteoarthritis. | Ask a veterinary professional to show you what is appropriate; do not improvise stretches or repetitions. |
Controlled leash walks
For some dogs with osteoarthritis, short, controlled walks can maintain movement while avoiding bursts of high-impact activity. VCA offers 10 minutes of walking three times daily as one possible starting example for a dog beginning an exercise routine, with weekly increases only if stiffness does not worsen. This is not a universal prescription: ask your dog’s veterinarian to set a plan for your dog’s condition and restrictions. See VCA’s guidance on exercising dogs with osteoarthritis.
Clinician-selected balance and coordination work
Walking slowly over low poles spaced about a body length apart is one example VCA describes for joint flexion and proprioception. A three-legged stand is another exercise a clinician may select to shift weight and challenge balance and strength. Neither is a default home routine: ask the veterinarian or rehabilitation therapist to prescribe and demonstrate the exercise, including which limb may safely bear or unload weight. Do not raise the difficulty without their recommendation. VCA explains how proprioception exercises should be selected and performed.

Swimming and range of motion
Cornell lists swimming, leash walking, and range-of-motion work among possible physical activity or rehabilitation options for dogs with osteoarthritis. The source does not set a universal swimming duration or intensity, and hands-on range-of-motion work should be tailored to the dog. Ask the clinician which option fits your dog and how to do it safely. Cornell’s osteoarthritis overview describes these options in the context of broader management.
How much should you exercise your dog?
There is no single safe duration, repetition count, or progression for every dog. Veterinary rehabilitation plans account for the condition, healing stage, current abilities, and limitations, and are reassessed over time. For an osteoarthritis example, VCA suggests starting with 10-minute walks three times a day and increasing weekly only if stiffness does not increase. Your dog’s clinician may recommend something different or advise against exercise.

Do not increase activity just because your dog seems eager or comfortable in the moment. Cornell notes that pain medicine may be part of rehabilitation in some cases, and its iliopsoas injury and rehabilitation guidance cautions that medication can mask a problem. Keep any restrictions from your treating clinician; that injury-specific warning is not a medication rule for every dog.

- Stop if your dog looks sore or tired. VCA names leg shaking, panting, and wide eyes as signs to discontinue a proprioception exercise and contact your veterinarian.
- Stop and seek veterinary advice if a limp appears, worsens, or persists; a severe or sudden limp needs prompt assessment.
- Do not push through pain or fatigue, or add repetitions or difficulty unless the clinician supervising the plan recommends it.
For further guidance on stopping proprioception work, see VCA’s exercise instructions.

What activities and home changes should you avoid or use cautiously?
Do not treat fetch, frisbee, jumping, or fast twisting as default mobility therapy for painful joints. VCA notes that ball and frisbee play can involve high-speed impact, abnormal twisting, and abrupt stops. Ask the veterinarian what forms of play are appropriate for your dog.
Ramps and non-slip rugs or floor runners may reduce jumping or slipping for some dogs with osteoarthritis, but they do not treat the cause of a mobility problem or replace veterinary care. Cornell discusses them as possible environmental adjustments in its osteoarthritis guidance.

Osteoarthritis is chronic and progressive; exercises do not cure it. Controlled activity may be one part of managing mobility and pain alongside other care chosen for the individual dog. A veterinary rehabilitation professional can tailor therapeutic exercises to a dog’s condition and healing stage, then reassess the plan. VCA explains the role of veterinary rehabilitation medicine.
