Feed community cats food made for cats, offer clean water, and put out only what they are likely to eat at one sitting. A regular daytime schedule, one tidy feeding location, and prompt cleanup—within 30 minutes—help keep the site fresh and reduce the chance of attracting insects or wildlife. Adjust portions and setup to the cats, weather, and conditions at the site.
What should you feed community cats?
Offer food formulated for cats rather than relying on homemade meals or single ingredients as a complete diet. Cats need taurine, an essential nutrient found only in animal-based protein, and their energy needs vary with size and activity, according to the ASPCA’s cat nutrition guidance.
Wet food and dry food
Canned food can be convenient and popular, while dry food is also a nutritious option. Alley Cat Allies describes dry food as just as nutritious as canned food; neither format is prescribed as best for every colony. Consider what the cats will eat and what you can serve and remove reliably.
- Wet food: Offer fresh portions and remove leftovers promptly. In cold weather, wet food can freeze, so plan to serve it when cats can eat it rather than leaving it out.
- Dry food: It can be easier to handle in cold conditions, but it still needs to be protected from moisture and removed on schedule.
Do not leave milk as a substitute for water or cat food; the ASPCA’s nutrition guidance notes that many cats do not tolerate it well.

How much food to put out
Alley Cat Allies gives an approximate adult-cat reference of 5.5 ounces of wet food and 2 ounces of dry food per day, or about half a cup if feeding dry food only. These are starting points, not a fixed ration for every cat: the number and size of cats, their health, other food sources, and weather can all affect intake. The organization recommends adjusting based on what the cats actually eat. Its guideline is to add food if the group consistently finishes within 15 minutes and reduce the amount if food remains after 30 minutes. See Alley Cat Allies’ feeding tips.
How to set up a clean feeding routine
- Choose one location. Select a quiet, secluded spot away from busy roads, heavy foot traffic, bird feeders, and sensitive wildlife habitat. Check that feeding is allowed on the property and under applicable local rules.
- Feed at a regular time. Daylight feeding is Alley Cat Allies’ preference. A predictable schedule helps you observe which cats arrive and makes it easier to remove leftovers.
- Group dishes in one station. A designated feeding station can shelter food from weather and make the area easier to maintain. Choose a setup you can clean and that does not give local wildlife easy access; an elevated station is one option, not a requirement.
- Provide clean water. Put out fresh water every day. Clean water bowls daily, and make sure water remains accessible in hot or freezing weather.
- Remove leftovers and equipment. Take away uneaten food, bowls, plates, and cans within 30 minutes. Remove disposable plates after use and recycle them where possible. Leftovers left overnight can draw insects and wildlife; prompt cleanup also helps keep food fresh.
- Clean the site. Pick up packaging and scraps, wash reusable dishes, and keep the station and surrounding area orderly. Alley Cat Allies suggests an ant moat made from a tray of water or ant-proof bowls where ants are a problem.

Adjust food and water for the weather
In hot weather
Provide ample fresh water and check that it stays clean and available. Keep food in a shaded, manageable location when possible, and continue removing uneaten portions within 30 minutes.
In freezing weather
Alley Cat Allies recommends serving fresh food and water daily or twice daily rather than allowing leftovers to freeze. Its cold-weather guidance discusses warming food and water, using heated electric bowls, and relying mainly on dry food in frigid temperatures. It also recommends deeper rather than wide bowls and advises avoiding metal bowls in cold weather. These are that organization’s winter suggestions; adapt the setup to local conditions and safe access to electricity. See Alley Cat Allies’ winter weather tips.

Monitor the cats and the feeding site
Keep a simple log of feeding times, which cats appear, newcomers, and any changes in health or behavior. Check for wildlife activity, pests, and other problems around the station. A tidy site and considerate communication with neighbors can make a feeding routine easier to sustain.
Feeding is only one part of community-cat care. The ASPCA describes caregiver observation and access to adequate food, water, and shelter as part of care, and recommends connecting colony management with trap-neuter-return-management (TNRM). Contact a local animal-care organization, veterinarian, or TNR group if a cat is new, sick, or injured; food alone does not address a medical problem. See the ASPCA position statement on community cats.
