If your dog is nearing the end of life, start by talking with your veterinarian about what to expect and how to keep your dog comfortable. There is no universal timeline or single quality-of-life score that can make the decision for every family. These seven actions can help you understand your dog’s needs, prepare for changes, and consider end-of-life choices with veterinary support.
1. Arrange a clear conversation with your veterinarian
Ask the veterinarian to explain the diagnosis, what is known and uncertain, and how the condition may progress. Discuss your dog’s chances of recovery, the available care choices, and each option’s likely benefits, risks, burdens, and costs. It can also help to ask what realistic comfort goals look like for your dog. A veterinarian can assess your dog’s condition and recovery prospects; general information cannot replace that individualized assessment. The AVMA’s pet-owner guidance offers questions families can raise when considering next steps.

2. Ask about comfort-focused care
A serious or terminal diagnosis does not necessarily mean there is nothing more to do. Ask whether veterinary-guided palliative care or hospice may suit your dog, and how the plan could address pain and other symptoms. Care may involve medication, non-drug approaches, or both, depending on the diagnosis and the dog’s needs. Do not change or stop treatment, or give medication, without veterinary guidance.

3. Keep a simple daily quality-of-life record
Brief notes can help you spot patterns and give the veterinary team a clearer picture than memory alone. Record observations such as:
- Pain, distress, or changes in breathing
- Appetite and drinking
- Mobility and ability to eliminate
- Interest in familiar activities and engagement with people or surroundings
- Whether the day felt mostly good or mostly difficult
Bring the notes to your appointments and ask how they fit with the veterinarian’s assessment. The AVMA suggests considering whether a pet has more bad days than good and whether it still enjoys familiar things. These reflections inform a decision; they do not replace a veterinary evaluation.

4. Make home life easier and safer
Ask what practical changes could help your particular dog. Depending on their condition and your home, options might include making food and water easier to reach, providing comfortable bedding, improving traction on slippery floors, keeping your dog clean, and maintaining a comfortable temperature. A nonslip mat or floor runner may help in some homes, but suitability depends on your dog’s mobility and the surface; it is not a treatment for pain. These examples come from AAHA’s end-of-life care guidance.

5. Make a daily-care and crisis plan
Write down who will handle daily care, how to reach your veterinarian or an after-hours service, and what changes should prompt a call. Ask the veterinary team what to do if symptoms worsen, and which situations need urgent attention. A personalized plan can account for the disease’s likely course and the support available at home; it can also help family members respond consistently. AAHA’s end-of-life care toolkit discusses planning for disease progression and potential crises.

Contact your veterinarian promptly about persistent pain, breathing difficulty, repeated crises, inability to eat or drink, or difficulty standing or walking. Ask for advice specific to your dog rather than waiting for a planned check-in.
6. Talk through end-of-life choices before a crisis, if possible
Ask how the veterinary team assesses suffering, what care options remain, and what changes would lead you to revisit the plan. If you are considering euthanasia or hospice-supported natural death, ask what each would involve for your dog and family. The right choice depends on the animal’s condition, comfort, likely disease course, available care, and what the family can manage. Neither option is universally right for every dog. Your veterinarian can help you weigh the circumstances without treating a single bad day or quality-of-life observation as a rule.

7. Plan the goodbye and aftercare
If euthanasia may be part of the plan, ask the veterinarian how the procedure works, whether family members may be present, and what to expect afterward. The AVMA says euthanasia is most often performed by injection; a sedative may be used depending on the pet’s needs and history. Some movements or breaths after the injection can be reflexes rather than signs of pain. Ask your veterinarian what to expect in your dog’s specific case. You can also discuss burial, cremation, or other aftercare arrangements in advance. The AVMA’s pet-owner guidance covers procedure expectations and family discussions.
