If your dog mouths, chews, or knocks over small nativity figures, choose a larger wooden or fabric display and put it somewhere the dog cannot reach. The ASPCA names wood and fabric as non-toxic decoration materials, but that is material guidance—not a finding that any nativity set is chew-proof or safe to swallow. A secure location and supervised access matter more than the material alone.
Why small nativity figures can be risky
A figure that is small enough to pick up can be chewed, broken, or swallowed. Changing from one material to another does not make an accessible decoration safe: a dog may still pull it down, damage it, or ingest a piece. Risk depends on the dog’s size and chewing habits as well as the item’s construction, attachments, and materials.

Broken glass or plastic ornament pieces can injure the mouth and digestive tract, according to the ASPCA. VCA Animal Hospitals also warns that glass shards can injure the skin, mouth, or gastrointestinal tract. These warnings concern holiday decorations generally; they are not tests of particular nativity products. A display that is larger may be harder to pick up than tiny figures, but “larger” is not a safety rating: a dog may still knock it down, chew it, or reach individual pieces.
For that reason, the useful question is not simply which material is safest. It is whether the complete display can be kept out of reach, whether it is stable, and whether it contains small parts the dog could pull off. Even a material the ASPCA names as non-toxic should not be treated as harmless to swallow.

Wood or fabric: choosing a nativity alternative
The ASPCA’s holiday guidance names wood and fabric as non-toxic decoration materials. In a 2013 seasonal press release, ASPCA animal toxicologist Dr. Tina Wismer said, “It’s best to use non-toxic decorations such as wood, fabric or even pinecones.” Applying that general advice to a nativity display makes larger wooden or fabric figures reasonable options to consider—not products specifically evaluated or certified by the ASPCA.
| Option | What the guidance supports | What to check before displaying it |
|---|---|---|
| Larger wooden nativity set | Wood is among the materials the ASPCA names for non-toxic holiday decorations. | Check whether figures have small detachable parts, whether the set is stable, and whether the dog can reach or chew it. The guidance does not establish durability or safety if swallowed. |
| Fabric nativity display | Fabric is also among the materials the ASPCA names. | Check its size, stability, and any parts or attachments the dog might pull off. The material recommendation is not a chew-safety assessment. |
When comparing displays, prioritize size and stability, the presence of small detachable pieces, and whether you can keep the display out of reach. A listing’s material description alone cannot tell you whether the item will withstand chewing or whether a piece would be harmless if swallowed.
What to compare when shopping
Start with the place where you plan to display the nativity, not with the product photo. Measure or otherwise assess the surface and decide whether the display will sit beyond your dog’s reach. A large set that does not fit securely on the intended surface may be less practical than a smaller display that can be placed safely. Whatever its size, it needs a stable position where a bump or brush is less likely to send it falling.

Next, inspect the whole arrangement for small figures, add-ons, and other pieces that could be separated from the main display. The concern is not limited to the central figures: an accessory that can be pulled off may become a small accessible object. Check product descriptions and photographs for component and material information, and ask the seller if important details are unclear. A listing can help you understand what an item is made of or what parts are included, but it cannot establish that a dog will not chew it or that swallowed pieces are safe.
Compare the wooden and fabric choices by how they fit your home and your access plan. Wood and fabric are both material options named by the ASPCA; the available guidance does not rank one above the other, test their durability, or say that either is safe to chew. Instead, ask which option can be placed most securely, has fewer small detachable parts, and is easiest to keep inaccessible. If your dog can reach and mouth either one, choose a different location or block access.

A useful search phrase is wooden Christmas nativity set; a fabric nativity display is another option to look for. Neither phrase implies a dog-proof product, verified listing, particular quality level, or guaranteed availability. Current prices and stock vary, and specific listings have not been checked here, so compare actual materials, components, size, and stability rather than relying on a label or a price alone. Shatterproof Christmas ornaments may be a helpful supporting choice for the tree, but they are not a substitute for nativity figures and are not safe for chewing or swallowing.
Set up the display where your dog cannot reach it
- Choose a location first. Use a stable surface beyond the dog’s reach, or place a barrier around the display if the usual location is accessible. This is practical access-control advice, not a tested guarantee for any particular barrier or piece of furniture. Consider whether the dog can approach from another side or reach the surface by jumping or standing up.
- Check the whole arrangement. Look for small figures, detachable decorations, or other pieces the dog could reach. Do not leave a tempting loose item at floor or tail height. Check nearby shelves and surfaces too: moving the main set higher does not help if a small ornament or accessory remains within reach.
- Secure the display. Keep it from tipping or falling if brushed or bumped. A larger decoration can still cause a problem if it is unstable or accessible. Do not rely on the display’s weight or size as a substitute for a secure position.
- Manage access when you cannot supervise. If the dog can enter the display area, use a barrier or another inaccessible location rather than relying on the dog’s training or the decoration’s material. Recheck the setup if furniture, gates, or the display itself are moved.
- Reassess as the room changes. Holiday decorations and gifts can add new objects at dog level. After arranging the room or opening presents, look for loose pieces, strings, and other tempting items that were not there when the nativity was first set up.
VCA’s dog-specific Christmas-tree advice uses tail height as a practical reference for ornaments: keep ornaments above the dog’s tail height. That instruction is for ornaments on the tree, not a guarantee that everything above that level is unreachable by every dog. For a nativity display, use the dog’s actual reach and behavior to choose a location; do not treat one height rule as a universal measurement.

Christmas tree and ornaments
Secure the tree so it cannot tip. VCA’s dog-specific guidance recommends keeping ornaments above tail height and blocking the dog’s access to tree water; the ASPCA also advises covering or restricting access to the water. VCA recommends shatterproof ornaments and placing small ornaments toward the top of the tree. Shatterproof ornaments can reduce the risk of broken shards, but they do not make ornaments safe to chew or swallow.
Think about the tree as a whole, not just the ornaments. A dog who can reach the tree may also get to the water at its base, so cover the water or use another way to prevent access. Keep the tree stable and check it after setting it up. The advice to secure it is aimed at preventing tipping; it is not a claim that any particular stand or installation has been tested for your household.
For ornaments, place small ones higher and avoid leaving breakable items within reach. ASPCA warns that glass or plastic ornament shards can injure the mouth and digestive tract; VCA describes possible injuries to the skin, mouth, or gastrointestinal tract from broken glass. Shatterproof ornaments are a comparative way to reduce the specific risk of shards, not a reason to let a dog play with ornaments. An ornament can still be chewed, swallowed, or pulled down.

Tinsel, ribbon, and gift strings
Keep tinsel away from dogs. VCA explains that swallowed tinsel, ribbon, or twine can lodge in the intestines as a linear foreign body. Put ribbon and gift strings away after presents are opened, and do not leave wrapping materials where a dog can mouth them. VCA’s dog-specific guidance advises calling a veterinarian if ribbon or wrapping paper may have been swallowed.
This matters during gift opening as well as while decorations are on display. Collect ribbon and strings as gifts are unwrapped, rather than leaving them on the floor or on a low table. Keep wrapping paper and other materials out of reach, and check the area afterward for pieces that may have fallen. The concern is ingestion, so a tidy-up after the activity is a useful part of managing access.
Electrical cords, batteries, and breakable décor
Keep electrical wires and batteries out of reach. The ASPCA warns that wires can cause electrical shock and punctured batteries can burn the mouth and esophagus. VCA warns that chewing light cords can cause electrical burns. Keep glass and plastic ornaments inaccessible as well, since broken pieces may injure the mouth or digestive tract.
Look for cords near the tree and around other holiday displays, not only for cords attached to the nativity. A dog that chews a light cord faces a different hazard from a dog that mouths a figure, and changing the figure’s material does nothing to address the cord. Keep wires and batteries inaccessible, and do not leave them where the dog can chew or puncture them.
Salt-dough ornaments and plants
Keep salt-dough ornaments out of reach: VCA warns that eating them can cause salt toxicity. For a floral holiday look, the ASPCA suggests faux alternatives or keeping floral decorations out of paw reach. Do not assume all seasonal greenery is safe; identify the plant rather than relying on a general label such as “holiday plant.” The ASPCA’s 2013 release says poinsettias cause mild to moderate gastrointestinal irritation, not that they are highly toxic.

Faux floral decorations are an option the ASPCA suggests in its holiday advice, but they still need to be kept out of reach if a dog can chew or pull at them. If you choose live greenery, identify the actual plant and keep it inaccessible as appropriate; a broad seasonal name is not enough to establish that a plant is safe. The poinsettia information is specific: the ASPCA’s release describes mild to moderate gastrointestinal irritation. It should not be recast as a claim that poinsettias are highly toxic, or used to assume that other plants have the same risk.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If your dog may have chewed or swallowed a decoration
Contact a veterinarian for advice if you think your dog swallowed ribbon or another hazardous item. VCA specifically advises calling a veterinarian if ribbon or wrapping paper may have been swallowed. For other suspected ingestions or injuries, a veterinarian can advise based on the item and your dog’s circumstances. Do not treat a material label such as “wood” or “fabric” as proof that an ingested piece is harmless.
When you call, be ready to explain what the dog may have reached and what might be missing or damaged. The relevant details can include whether the item was ribbon, wrapping paper, a battery, a cord, an ornament, or another decoration, and whether the dog may have chewed or swallowed it. The sources do not provide a home-treatment protocol or a universal response based on material alone; a veterinarian can advise about the individual situation.
If you find a damaged decoration but are unsure whether anything was swallowed, do not assume that the remaining pieces tell the whole story. Keep the dog away from the area and contact a veterinarian for advice if ingestion or injury is possible. This is especially important for the hazards identified by ASPCA and VCA, including swallowed ribbon or twine, chewed cords, batteries, salt-dough ornaments, and broken ornament pieces.
Practical pre-display checklist
- Choose a larger wooden or fabric display, understanding that neither material is a guarantee against chewing or ingestion hazards.
- Decide on a stable, inaccessible location before choosing the display; use a barrier or a different location if the dog can reach the usual spot.
- Check the entire set for small figures, detachable pieces, and attachments a dog could pull off.
- Compare actual size, stability, components, and placement options rather than relying on material labels or product photos alone.
- Secure the tree, keep ornaments above the dog’s tail height, place small ornaments toward the top, and block access to tree water.
- Consider shatterproof ornaments to reduce broken-shard risk, while still keeping all ornaments away from chewing and swallowing.
- Keep tinsel, ribbon, gift strings, cords, batteries, salt-dough ornaments, and breakable decorations out of reach; collect wrapping materials after gifts are opened.
- Keep plants inaccessible and identify their species; faux floral alternatives are another option named by the ASPCA.
- Contact a veterinarian if your dog may have swallowed a hazardous decoration or wrapping material.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a safer alternative to small nativity figures for a dog that chews?
Consider a larger wooden or fabric nativity display, materials the ASPCA names as non-toxic decoration options. This is an application of general material guidance, not a product safety certification. Choose a stable display without small detachable pieces and place it somewhere your dog cannot reach.

Are wooden or fabric nativity sets dog-proof?
No. The ASPCA’s material guidance does not establish that a particular wooden or fabric set is chew-proof, durable, or safe to swallow. An accessible item can still be knocked down, chewed, or ingested, so placement and access control matter.
How should I place Christmas decorations around my dog?
Use a stable location beyond your dog’s reach, or block access to the area. For a Christmas tree, VCA advises securing it, keeping ornaments above tail height, and preventing access to tree water. Check the whole setup for small pieces and loose items.
Are shatterproof Christmas ornaments safe for dogs to chew?
No. VCA recommends shatterproof ornaments as a way to reduce the risk of broken shards, but that does not make an ornament safe to chew or swallow. Keep ornaments inaccessible and place small ones toward the top of the tree.

VCA warns that swallowed tinsel, ribbon, or twine can lodge in the intestines as a linear foreign body. Put strings away after opening gifts and keep wrapping materials out of reach. Call a veterinarian if ribbon or wrapping paper may have been swallowed.
What should I do if my dog may have swallowed a Christmas decoration?
Contact a veterinarian for advice, especially if ribbon or wrapping paper may have been swallowed. Tell the veterinarian what item may be involved and what happened. A wood or fabric label does not prove an ingested piece is harmless.
Are poinsettias highly toxic to dogs?
The ASPCA’s 2013 holiday release describes poinsettias as causing mild to moderate gastrointestinal irritation, not as highly toxic. Identify plants rather than assuming all holiday greenery is safe, and keep floral decorations out of paw reach or consider faux alternatives.
What should I look for when buying a wooden nativity set for a home with a dog?
Check the set’s size, stability, materials, and whether it includes small detachable figures or attachments. Consider whether you can put it somewhere the dog cannot reach. Product descriptions can help identify components, but they do not certify a set as chew-proof or safe to swallow.

The Bottom Line
A larger wooden or fabric nativity display is a reasonable alternative to small figures, but neither material makes a decoration dog-proof. Choose a stable set with no tempting loose pieces, put it beyond your dog’s reach, and manage access when you cannot supervise. Apply the same approach to the tree, ornaments, ribbon, cords, batteries, plants, and other holiday décor—and contact a veterinarian if your dog may have swallowed a hazardous item.
