Choose a more substantial waterproof jacket when the dog also needs protection from wind or added warmth. The labels are not standardized, though, so compare a garment’s materials, lining, coverage and fit rather than relying on its name.
Raincoat or waterproof jacket: what is the difference?
In common use, a dog raincoat is a relatively simple waterproof layer, sometimes with a breathable lining. A multipurpose coat or jacket may add wind protection, fleece or padding. PDSA describes a raincoat as “a simple waterproof layer that protects your dog from wet weather, often with a breathable lining” (PDSA).
These are practical distinctions, not regulated product categories. Retailers may use “raincoat,” “jacket” and “coat” differently, and a product’s name alone does not establish how waterproof or warm it is. Check the construction and the maker’s description.

Those are common category differences, not guarantees about every model. A well-fitting garment that suits the weather matters more than whether its label says “coat” or “jacket.”

Does your dog need a coat for wet walks?
Not every dog needs rainwear. Whether a coat is useful depends on the dog’s coat, build, the temperature and wind, how wet the walk is, and how comfortable the dog seems. A healthy dog with a dense coat may be comfortable without an extra layer on some rainy outings.
Dogs with little natural insulation may benefit more from staying dry or having an appropriate extra layer. Examples include short-coated or hairless dogs, lean dogs and some senior dogs, as discussed by the American Kennel Club and PDSA. These are examples, not a rule for every dog in those groups; observe your own dog and consider the conditions.

A coat can help keep fur drier and may make cleanup easier, but that is not a promise that it prevents illness or skin problems. If your dog is uncomfortable in a garment, staying dry is not worth forcing it to wear one.
How to choose the right style and features
Start with what the walk calls for: a shell for rain when extra warmth is unnecessary, or a lined or padded option when the dog also needs warmth or wind protection. Then compare the garment itself:

- Water protection: Check whether the outer fabric is described as waterproof or only water-resistant.
- Coverage: See how much of the chest and belly it covers. More coverage is not automatically better if it restricts movement or traps unwanted warmth.
- Lining and insulation: Note whether there is a lining, whether it is intended to add warmth or breathability, and whether that level suits the weather and your dog.
- Harness access: If you use a harness, make sure the opening works with your existing setup.
- Adjustments and closures: Straps and fasteners should keep the garment in place without constricting the dog.
- Visibility: Reflective details can be useful when you walk in poor light.
- Hood and extra coverage: Treat these as design choices, not automatic advantages; consider whether your dog tolerates them and can move comfortably.

Use the specific manufacturer’s size chart: sizing conventions vary, and weight alone may not reflect a dog’s proportions. Measure the dog rather than guessing from breed or a previous garment.

- Neck: Measure around the neck where the garment’s neckline will sit.
- Chest: Measure around the widest part of the chest, just behind the front legs.
- Body length: Measure from the base of the neck to the base of the tail, following the maker’s instructions for the garment.
- Compare all measurements: Choose the size that matches the product’s chart and check how the maker recommends handling measurements that fall between sizes.
- Check movement: Once the dog wears it, confirm they can walk and do their usual activities freely and that the garment stays in place without rubbing.
Biting, scratching or rubbing at the garment can indicate discomfort or a poor fit, according to PDSA’s fit advice. Adjust or remove the garment if it bothers your dog; do not assume they will simply get used to an uncomfortable fit.

A quick buying checklist
- Choose a lightweight waterproof shell when rain protection is the main need and added warmth is not.
- Choose a more substantial jacket only if its lining or wind protection suits the dog and the conditions.
- Confirm the outer material’s stated water protection, chest and belly coverage, and harness compatibility.
- Use the manufacturer’s neck, chest and body-length chart, then check movement and rubbing in the finished fit.
- Consider a towel for drying your dog after the walk if the coat does not keep them fully dry.
