A dog’s raincoat should stay in place without pulling at the shoulders, pressing into the chest or armpits, or changing the way the dog moves. Measure your dog, adjust the coat, then watch your dog walk, turn, sit, and toilet in it. If rubbing or restricted movement continues, stop using that coat and try a different size or cut.
Measure your dog before choosing a size
Use the coat maker’s sizing chart and measure the dog rather than choosing by weight alone. The American Kennel Club recommends checking neck, chest, stomach, and back length, with back length measured from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. Follow the brand’s own measuring instructions because sizing methods can differ. AKC raincoat fit guidance
Between-size advice is brand-specific. For example, Hurtta says back length determines coat size for its product and advises sizing up if a dog falls between sizes. Ruffwear’s Sun Shower guidance instead suggests sizing up for a more relaxed fit or down for a snugger fit when between sizes. Adjust the coat so it stays put without pulling
Fasten and adjust the coat on your dog, aiming for a secure fit without tight pressure across the neck, chest, shoulders, or underarms. A coat that is too loose can shift, bunch, and rub; one that is too tight can restrict movement. Check whether the fabric rides into the armpits or pulls across the shoulders when your dog takes a step.

Adjustment points can help accommodate different shapes, but their placement and range vary by product. Hurtta describes the Mudventure Coat ECO as adjustable at the neckline, collar, waist, and back length. The company describes the Monsoon Coat II as having four adjustment points, a more fitted neckline, and more room around the front legs. Check movement before going out in the rain
Let your dog move around briefly in the fastened coat and watch for changes in movement or signs of discomfort. These practical observations can help you spot a poor fit; they are not a veterinary diagnostic test.

- Walk and turn: look for shoulder pull, short or altered steps, and fabric shifting or bunching.
- Sit and stand: check that the coat does not tug across the chest or press into the front legs.
- Check the armpits and leg openings: fabric should not ride up or rub with each step.
- Check toileting access: the coat should not obstruct the dog’s ability to toilet normally.
Stop and reassess if the coat rubs, pulls, bunches, or makes your dog resist moving. If a different adjustment does not resolve the problem, discontinue that coat and try a different size or cut. Seek veterinary advice for persistent skin irritation, pain, or an altered gait instead of assuming clothing is the only cause. Check the coat with the harness your dog actually wears
If your dog wears a harness, try the coat with that harness in place. A correctly aligned leash opening may let the harness sit underneath, but do not assume an opening will match every harness’s position. The coat should not force the harness or fabric out of place. Choose a different cut if adjustment does not solve the problem
Dogs differ in body proportions, so the same size can sit differently on different dogs. Compare a coat’s coverage and cut, its room around the shoulders and front legs, how it adjusts, and whether its leash access aligns with your harness. A chest-girth-based size chart, for instance, may still allow for variation in back length: Ruffwear says the Sun Shower may fit a dog slightly shorter or longer depending on proportions. For a dog that needs fuller coverage, Ruffwear describes the Sun Shower Coverall as having articulated four-way stretch sleeves, hem adjustment, and a leash portal. Introduce the coat gradually if your dog is wary
Some dogs need time to get used to clothing. Let your dog investigate the coat, reward calm interactions, and build up to short periods of wear before trying it outdoors.
