For a dog-conscious garden, start by checking each plant’s exact identity against a dog-specific toxicity list. Calendula (Calendula officinalis) is one documented option; keep dogs away from recognized toxic plants such as sago palm, azalea, oleander, foxglove, daffodil and yew. “Non-toxic” is not a license to chew: the ASPCA says eating any plant material can cause vomiting or gastrointestinal upset.

Dog-safe garden plants to consider growing

The examples below are listed as non-toxic to dogs by the cited sources. Treat them as candidates to verify, not as a guarantee that every plant with a similar common name, cultivar or related species is safe.

Calendula (Calendula officinalis)

Calendula, also called pot marigold, is a clear example because the ASPCA dog list identifies Calendula officinalis as non-toxic to dogs, and Utah State University Extension provides growing guidance. The botanical name matters: “marigold” can refer to different plants.

Utah State University Extension describes calendula as an annual and advises sowing in spring when soil reaches about 60°F; typical germination is 7–14 days. Those are Utah Extension recommendations, not a universal planting calendar. Elsewhere, follow local Extension advice and the seed packet.

Plants with serious potential effects

  • Sago palm: ASPCA warns it can cause significant gastrointestinal distress and liver failure.
  • Azaleas and rhododendrons: ASPCA describes possible neurologic signs and changes to heart rate or rhythm.
  • Oleander and foxglove: ASPCA warns these can significantly affect heart rhythm.
  • Yew and castor bean: Both appear on the ASPCA dog list as toxic plants.

Bulbs and other familiar garden plants

  • Daffodils: Cornell University’s Riney Canine Health Center says flowers, leaves and bulbs can cause abdominal pain, vomiting and diarrhea, with potentially severe cardiac or respiratory effects.
  • Lily-of-the-valley: Cornell identifies possible cardiac arrhythmias, decreased heart rate and seizures.
  • Tulips and hyacinths: Their bulbs are toxic to dogs, according to Cornell.

Cornell also notes that bone meal used when planting bulbs may attract dogs. Store it securely and prevent access to treated areas while you manage the garden.

Be careful with the word “lily”: ASPCA’s general gardening advice mentions kidney failure in cats. That cat-specific warning should not be presented as a dog-specific effect. For dogs, use guidance that identifies the actual plant and canine risk.

How to check a plant before it goes in the garden

  1. Find the scientific name. Check the nursery label or seed packet; common names can refer to more than one plant.
  2. Search a dog-specific source. Look up the exact name in the ASPCA plant list for dogs, rather than assuming a related plant has the same status.
  3. Ask for help if identification is uncertain. Penn State Extension advises contacting an Extension office with a photo or sample when you cannot identify an existing plant.
  4. Check local growing suitability. Climate, soil and exposure differ by location. Use local Extension guidance for planting dates and conditions; the calendula timing above is specifically from Utah State University Extension.

Reduce exposure, even with plants listed as non-toxic

The ASPCA cautions that its plant list is not all-inclusive and that any plant material may cause vomiting or gastrointestinal upset. Plant selection is one safeguard, not a substitute for managing a dog’s access.

  • Supervise outdoor time. The ASPCA advises: “Always supervise your pets in areas where there may be toxic plants or plant products.”
  • Design around access. Penn State Extension suggests paths, barriers, protected beds and containers to manage where pets roam and shield vulnerable plants. These are layout options, not guarantees that a dog cannot reach a plant.
  • Secure compost. ASPCA warns compost can contain grapes, coffee grounds, garlic or onions; moldy food material can cause stomach upset or neurologic signs, including tremors and seizures. Keep compost inaccessible to pets.

What to do if your dog may have eaten a toxic plant

Contact a local veterinarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 promptly after suspected toxic ingestion, or if your dog is ill. ASPCA advises seeking professional guidance rather than relying on a plant list to assess an exposure.
