How Camera Traps Help Scientists Monitor Rare, Elusive Wildlife

Motion-triggered cameras let scientists observe elusive wildlife remotely, but what the images can establish depends on survey design and analysis.

Camera traps let scientists record wildlife in places and at times when people are not there. Motion-triggered cameras can reveal which animals pass a site, when they are active and how they behave—but photographs alone do not count every animal in a population.

What a camera trap does

A camera trap is an unattended camera that takes a photograph or video when a sensor detects movement. Many use infrared sensing to detect moving warm objects, then save the record to a memory card. Researchers can leave cameras in the field for weeks or months, collecting observations without watching the site continuously. WWF-UK explains how camera traps work, and the Smithsonian describes their use for hard-to-observe animals such as giant pandas and clouded leopards.

How scientists design a camera-trap survey

The study begins with a question: for example, whether a species uses a wildlife corridor, whether its activity changes between seasons, or whether detections shift after a management intervention. Researchers choose locations and camera positions to suit the species and question. Placement is part of the method, not a matter of simply putting a camera anywhere: WWF says its teams research where to position cameras to identify productive sites.

Once cameras are deployed, teams retrieve the images or video and classify the detections, manually or with image-analysis tools. They then analyze the records using methods suited to the question. The camera settings, duration and sampling design vary by study, so there is no universal deployment recipe. WWF-UK’s camera-trapping guidelines provide further field guidance.

What camera traps can reveal

  • Presence at a site: An identifiable image shows that an animal passed within the camera’s detection area at that time.
  • Activity: Repeated detections can show when animals are active, such as whether records tend to occur at night.
  • Behavior and habitat use: Images can document visible behaviors and show which parts of a habitat animals use.
  • Occupancy or change over time: Systematically collected records can support analyses of whether sites are used and how detections change across times or locations.
  • Individual recognition and population work: Where animals can be distinguished and the survey and analysis support it, images may contribute to studies of individuals, abundance or population trends.

These are different questions requiring appropriate evidence and analysis. A large number of photographs is not automatically a large number of animals: one animal may trigger a camera repeatedly, while others may never enter its detection area. Population estimates need suitable study design and analytical assumptions, and may require individual identification or other information.

What camera traps miss

A camera only records animals that enter its field of view and trigger its sensor; detection also depends on placement, sensor range, animal movement and image clarity. Some animals may respond to a camera or its flash, so disturbance or avoidance can be a study consideration rather than a guaranteed outcome.

Acoustic recorders capture a different kind of evidence: sounds. They can detect vocalizing frogs, birds, insects and some mammals that may never be photographed. In work such as the Smithsonian’s account of monitoring the Amazon, cameras and acoustic recorders are complementary tools, not universal substitutes for one another. The right choice depends on the target species, habitat, question, field workload and analysis plan. The Smithsonian’s Amazon feature explains the use of both “eyes and ears” in monitoring.

Fieldwork and image-analysis constraints

Unattended does not mean effortless. Remote cameras can take substantial time and effort to reach and retrieve, and harsh conditions—including hot, moist environments—can cause equipment problems. Survey logistics and maintenance influence both the data collected and the resources required.

Image collections can also grow too large to review efficiently by hand. WWF describes Wildlife Insights as a platform where conservation organizations, governments and citizen scientists can upload, analyze and share camera-trap photographs; its AI can help identify species. Automated identification can speed up triage, but a classification should not be treated as error-free or universally validated without evidence for the particular use.

For a wider overview of conservation technology, see WWF-UK’s conservation technology page. In describing the impact of the method, WWF-US Senior Wildlife Conservation Scientist Arnaud Lyet said camera traps have changed how conservationists monitor and count wild animals, particularly in dense tropical forests where people rarely see them directly. WWF’s 2019 account of technology and teamwork in wildlife monitoring provides his perspective.
