Use one quart of peroxide, one-quarter cup of baking soda and one to two teaspoons of dish soap; leave it on the coat for five minutes, rinse thoroughly and repeat once if needed. Keep it out of the eyes and mouth, never store the mixture, and contact a veterinarian immediately for eye or mouth exposure, a possible bite, breathing trouble or signs of illness.
A normal bath often fails because skunk secretion contains sulfur compounds that ordinary soap does not make water-soluble. Residue can also smell again when the coat gets wet, so a dog may seem clean at first and then become pungent later.

Why skunk odor stays in a dog’s fur
Skunk spray is an oily secretion containing sulfur-containing thiols and thioacetates. Thiols produce the intense odor immediately. Thioacetates are less pungent at first but can convert into thiols when they contact water. That conversion explains why the smell can return after rain, swimming or a routine bath.

Cornell University’s Riney Canine Health Center notes that ordinary soap alone does not make the thiol component water-soluble. Shampoo can remove dirt and some surface oil, but it may leave odor-producing material bound to the hair. Wetting the coat later can release more odor, which is why repeated ordinary baths are often disappointing.

The first priorities are containment, eye and airway protection, and prompt treatment. Do not bring a freshly sprayed dog through the house if you can avoid it: the oily secretion can transfer to carpets, upholstery, clothing and bedding.
Before washing: contain the odor and check your dog
Keep the dog outdoors
Move the dog to an outdoor, well-ventilated area before touching the coat. If weather or safety makes that impossible, use a washable, isolated space such as a garage only if it is adequately ventilated and the dog cannot escape. Keep the dog away from furniture and fabrics until the coat has been treated and rinsed.
Protect yourself and your home
- Wear disposable or washable gloves and old clothing.
- Use an open bucket or bowl for the treatment; do not seal the mixture in a bottle or jar.
- Keep towels, brushes and collars that touched the spray outside or in a washable container until cleaned.
- Prevent the dog from rubbing its face on you or licking the treatment.
Look for urgent exposure
Check the eyes, mouth, nose and breathing before starting a bath. Direct spray to the eyes can cause severe irritation and may produce shallow corneal ulcers. Spray in the face can irritate the respiratory tract. A dog that is coughing, struggling to breathe, squinting continuously, pawing at the eyes, or unable to keep the eyes open needs veterinary advice rather than a prolonged home wash.

Also inspect the skin for punctures. A skunk spray does not prove that a bite occurred, but rabies transmission is associated with bites. If a bite is possible, contact a veterinarian promptly and confirm that the dog’s rabies vaccination is current.
Fresh peroxide treatment: exact home procedure
Cornell and Texas A&M veterinary guidance support a freshly prepared treatment for a dog that is otherwise well. Cornell gives a range of one to two teaspoons of liquid dishwashing soap; Texas A&M cites one teaspoon. Do not increase the peroxide concentration or amount.
- Measure the ingredients. Use one quart of fresh 3% hydrogen peroxide, one-quarter cup of baking soda and one teaspoon of liquid dishwashing soap. If following Cornell’s range, up to two teaspoons of dish soap may be used.
- Mix only when ready to apply. Combine the ingredients in an open container. The reaction can create pressure, so never mix it in a closed bottle, and never prepare it ahead for storage.
- Wet only the sprayed coat if necessary. Work outdoors and keep the solution away from the eyes, mouth, nostrils and any irritated or broken skin. A cloth or sponge can help you control application around the head.
- Massage through the fur. Wearing gloves, work the solution into the affected hair so it contacts the oily residue. Avoid letting the dog lick the mixture.
- Wait five minutes. Keep the dog still and supervised while the solution works. Do not leave it on substantially longer in an attempt to increase its effectiveness.
- Rinse thoroughly. Use plenty of clean water, directing runoff away from the face. Continue until the coat no longer feels soapy.
- Repeat once if odor remains. A second fresh batch can be applied if needed. Do not save leftovers for a later bath.
- Finish with regular pet shampoo. After the peroxide mixture has been rinsed out, wash with the dog’s normal shampoo, rinse well and dry with washable towels.
Use fresh ingredients for each application. Dispose of unused solution after the wash; do not cap, transport or store it.

Safety limits of the peroxide mixture
Eyes and mouth
Hydrogen peroxide and baking soda can irritate tissues. Keep the solution out of the eyes and mouth, and do not use it as an oral rinse. If spray or treatment enters an eye, flush only as directed by a veterinary professional and seek immediate veterinary care. Eye exposure from the skunk itself can damage the cornea, so persistent squinting or redness is not a cosmetic problem.

Fur and fabric discoloration
Hydrogen peroxide can lighten black or dark fur to a bronze shade. It can also bleach clothing, towels and household fabrics. This color change is a known trade-off of the home recipe, not evidence that the dog’s coat has been permanently damaged. Rinse fabrics promptly and keep the dog away from light-colored furnishings.
Never store the mixture
The peroxide, baking soda and soap reaction can build pressure in a closed container. Mixing a batch in advance, putting it in a spray bottle or saving it for another day creates an avoidable container hazard and weakens the treatment as it sits.

Commercial pet odor removers: when they fit
A ready-made, pet-labeled skunk odor remover is an alternative when you want to avoid peroxide-related lightening or prefer label-based instructions. Cornell identifies Skunk-Off and Nature’s Miracle Skunk Odor Remover as examples. These products do not contain hydrogen peroxide, so they will not cause the peroxide-related change in black fur described above.
The cited veterinary guidance does not establish that either product works faster or more reliably than the fresh home mixture, and it does not provide a controlled comparison of brands. Treat commercial products as options rather than guaranteed one-wash solutions. Check the current label for dilution, contact time, eye-safety instructions and whether the formulation is intended for use on dogs. Do not combine a commercial remover with peroxide or other cleaners unless the label specifically directs it.

After the first wash: dealing with returning odor
A lingering smell does not necessarily mean the treatment was unsafe or useless. Skunk residue can remain on dense undercoat, around the collar, between toes or on the tail. Thioacetates can also release more odor when the coat becomes wet again.

Do not mix household bleach, ammonia, vinegar or other cleaners into the peroxide recipe. Combining cleaning chemicals can create irritating fumes or unsafe reactions, and no cited veterinary source recommends it for skunked dogs.
When skunk spray becomes a veterinary problem
Seek immediate care for direct eye or mouth exposure
Call a veterinarian promptly if spray entered the eyes or mouth, or if the dog has marked facial swelling, persistent squinting, repeated pawing at the eyes, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or severe coughing. A dog may inhale or swallow spray while grooming, producing nausea, drooling or vomiting.
Watch for delayed illness
Cornell advises monitoring a sprayed dog for one to three days. Contact a veterinarian immediately for lethargy, weakness or loss of appetite. Severe exposure, repeated exposures or ingestion can rarely cause oxidative damage to red blood cells and dangerous anemia. A veterinarian may recommend blood work after heavy or repeated exposure, even if the odor has been reduced.
Get care for wounds or a possible bite
Any broken skin after the encounter warrants veterinary advice. A bite changes the rabies-risk assessment and may require wound care, vaccination review and public-health guidance. Do not assume that the absence of visible spray on the face rules out a bite.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes that make the smell worse
- Bathing indoors first: this spreads oily residue to flooring and fabrics.
- Using only ordinary shampoo: soap alone may not make thiols water-soluble.
- Wetting the dog before deciding on a treatment: water can convert thioacetates into stronger-smelling thiols.
- Applying peroxide near the eyes or mouth: both the spray and the treatment can injure sensitive tissue.
- Increasing peroxide or leaving the mixture on longer: more is not safer and can increase irritation or coat lightening.
- Storing a mixed batch: pressure can build in a closed container.
- Ignoring behavior after washing: weakness, lethargy, poor appetite, vomiting or breathing changes require medical attention, not another cosmetic bath.
A practical decision guide
- Is the dog having trouble breathing, showing severe eye pain, or unable to swallow? Seek emergency veterinary care.
- Could the skunk have bitten the dog? Keep the dog separated, avoid handling wounds with bare hands and contact a veterinarian promptly.
- Is the dog otherwise alert with odor mainly on the coat? Keep it outdoors and use the fresh home mixture or a pet-labeled remover.
- Would fur discoloration be unacceptable? Choose a peroxide-free, pet-labeled product and follow its current directions.
- Does odor or illness return over the next one to three days? Stop repeated home treatments and ask a veterinarian whether examination or blood work is needed.
