Dog Sprayed by a Skunk: Safe Cleanup, Warning Signs, and Prevention

Move your dog away from the skunk, check for eye, mouth, breathing, and bite injuries, then clean the coat safely and monitor for delayed illness.

Move your dog away from the skunk, keep the dog outside or in a washable area, and check for eye, mouth, breathing, or bite injuries before worrying about the odor. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine advises immediate veterinary care when spray reaches the eyes or mouth. A bite also needs prompt veterinary attention because rabies concerns involve saliva and wounds, not the smell of skunk spray. If there is no urgent exposure, you can clean the coat with a freshly mixed peroxide solution or a commercial pet odor remover, while protecting the eyes, mouth, fabrics, and your own skin.

What to do in the first few minutes

Skunks spray defensively. Once your dog is sprayed, leash the dog and leave the area without chasing the skunk. Keep the dog outdoors, in a garage that can be washed, or in another place where oily residue will not reach carpets, sofas, bedding, or car upholstery. Do not carry a sprayed dog through the house unless there is an immediate medical emergency.

  1. Create distance. Move away calmly and keep the dog from approaching the skunk again. A second encounter can mean another dose of spray or a bite.
  2. Check the exposure. Look for spray in the eyes or mouth, inhalation distress, vomiting, unusual weakness, and any puncture wound. Do not judge the seriousness by odor alone.
  3. Call a veterinarian immediately for an eye or mouth exposure, a bite, or breathing trouble. Cornell notes that direct eye exposure can damage the cornea and cause temporary blindness. A bite or possible saliva exposure is a separate urgent issue from being sprayed.
  4. If there is no emergency sign, start odor control promptly. The cleaning mixture works best when applied soon after the spray, and the dog should remain away from household fabrics until rinsed.
  5. Monitor after substantial exposure. Watch closely for one to three days. Weakness, lethargy, loss of appetite, or unusually dark or chocolate-colored mucous membranes requires veterinary assessment.

When skunk spray is a veterinary emergency

Skunk spray can irritate several body systems. Cornell’s Riney Canine Health Center, in guidance updated June 2025, describes the following possible effects:

Exposure or sign Why it matters Action
Spray in the eyes Redness, swelling, corneal damage, and temporary blindness can occur. Cornell extension veterinarian Dr. Aly Cohen explains: “If skunk spray gets in the eyes, it can cause swelling and redness to the eye, damage the cornea (outer surface of the eye) and even cause temporary blindness.” Seek immediate veterinary care.
Spray in the mouth Nausea, drooling, and vomiting are possible. Swallowed spray is associated with the rare risk of severe anemia after heavy, repeated, or ingested exposure. Contact a veterinarian immediately.
Inhalation The spray can irritate breathing. Get urgent veterinary advice, especially for labored breathing or persistent distress.
Bite or puncture wound The medical and public-health concern is saliva entering a wound or mucous membrane, including possible rabies exposure. Have the dog assessed promptly and follow local public-health guidance.
Hours to a day later: weakness, lethargy, poor appetite, or dark/chocolate mucous membranes These can signal a serious blood problem. Cornell says a veterinarian may recommend blood work after substantial exposure. Treat as urgent; do not wait for the odor to fade.

Heavy, repeated, or swallowed exposure is uncommon but can rarely cause severe anemia. A dog that seems normal immediately afterward can still become ill later, which is why the one-to-three-day observation period matters. If you are unsure whether the dog swallowed spray or how much reached the face, call your veterinary clinic rather than attempting to estimate the dose at home.

Skunk spray is not the same as a rabies exposure

Being sprayed does not transmit rabies. The Indiana Department of Health explains that rabies virus is carried in saliva and nervous tissue; spray secretions are not the route of transmission. Rabies exposure involves a bite or infected saliva contacting a wound, the eyes, mouth, or another mucous membrane.

That distinction does not make a skunk encounter harmless. A dog can be sprayed and bitten in the same incident, and a tiny puncture can be hidden by fur. Check the face, ears, neck, legs, and chest carefully, but do not squeeze or probe a wound. Ask your veterinarian how to handle vaccination status and contact local public-health officials when a bite or possible saliva contact occurred. Poison Control likewise advises immediate professional evaluation when a person or pet may have been bitten or exposed to saliva.

How to remove skunk odor at home

Only begin home cleaning when the dog has no urgent eye, mouth, breathing, or wound problem. Wear gloves and old clothing. Keep the dog outside or in a washable area, and protect your eyes while applying any cleaner. The following homemade treatment is the formula described by Cornell and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons dishwashing liquid
  1. Measure the ingredients immediately before use. Do not premix or store the solution.
  2. Combine them in an open container. The mixture can release pressure, so never put it in a sealed bottle or jar.
  3. Apply it to the sprayed coat while it is fresh. Keep it out of the eyes, mouth, nose, and any irritated skin.
  4. Let it sit for about five minutes.
  5. Rinse the dog thoroughly with clean water.
  6. Repeat once if odor remains, then discard any unused solution.

Hydrogen peroxide can turn black fur bronze and can bleach clothing, towels, carpets, and other fabrics. Rinse carefully around the head and do not assume that a stronger concentration will work better; the cited recipe uses ordinary 3% peroxide. If the dog has eye irritation, facial exposure, or skin injury, stop and obtain veterinary instructions instead of trying repeated applications.

Commercial odor removers versus the homemade mixture

Commercial pet odor neutralizers are an alternative when household ingredients are unavailable or when preserving dark coat color is important. Cornell names Thornell’s Skunk-Off and Nature’s Miracle Skunk Odor Remover as examples and notes that these over-the-counter products do not contain hydrogen peroxide, so they do not change black fur color in the same way. Follow the current label for animal use, contact time, rinsing, ventilation, and approved surfaces, and keep every cleaner away from the eyes and mouth.

Decision factor Fresh peroxide mixture Commercial pet remover
Ingredients or supply Requires 3% hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, and dishwashing liquid on hand. Requires a product purchased in advance or available locally; exact ingredients vary by label.
Dark fur May turn black fur bronze. Cornell says products without hydrogen peroxide will not change black fur in the same way.
Fabrics Can bleach clothing and household textiles; keep the dog away from them until rinsed. Use only on surfaces named on the label and test cautiously where the label permits.
Preparation Must be mixed fresh, used promptly, and discarded; never store it in a closed container. Use and store exactly as directed on the current label.
Effectiveness comparison The cited veterinary sources do not report a controlled comparison showing that one option works best. Choose based on safety, coat and surface compatibility, availability, and the product directions.

Do not combine commercial products with peroxide, bleach, ammonia, or other cleaners. Mixing products can create irritating fumes or make the treatment less predictable. If the odor persists after a careful second wash, allow the coat to dry and reassess rather than repeatedly applying chemicals.

What not to do

  • Do not bring the dog straight indoors. The oily residue can spread to furniture, walls, bedding, and vehicle interiors.
  • Do not seal homemade peroxide solution in a container. Pressure can build and burst the container.
  • Do not use the homemade mixture near the eyes or mouth. Those exposures need professional guidance, not a stronger cleaning attempt.
  • Do not rely on tomato juice or perfume to neutralize the spray. They do not replace the peroxide formula or a labeled pet product and can add mess without addressing exposure risks.
  • Do not chase, corner, or trap the skunk yourself without checking local rules. Wildlife regulations and lawful removal methods differ by location.
  • Do not assume odor means rabies. Rabies concern comes from a bite or saliva entering tissue, so report and manage that exposure separately.

Preventing another skunk encounter

Skunks commonly warn before spraying. North Carolina Wildlife describes stomping and raising the tail as defensive signals. If you see those behaviors, back away and give the animal a clear escape route; pulling a dog toward the skunk or allowing an off-leash investigation increases the chance of a second spray or bite.

Change how outdoor time is supervised

  • Keep the dog leashed in places where skunks are known to be active.
  • Supervise every yard trip, especially after dark, and check the yard before opening the door.
  • Avoid dense wooded areas around dawn and dusk when planning walks, as Cornell recommends.
  • Use a flashlight to inspect corners, shrubs, decks, and sheds before allowing the dog to explore.

Remove food and shelter incentives

  • Keep pet food and water dishes inaccessible overnight.
  • Secure garbage and compost in wildlife-resistant containers.
  • Block openings under porches, decks, sheds, and other structures only after confirming no animal is inside.
  • Remove fallen fruit, spilled birdseed, and other accessible food sources around the property.

An established den, a skunk trapped in a window well, or repeated activity calls for local guidance. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources recommends a wildlife control operator for people who do not want to remove a skunk themselves and notes that capture and release rules are local. Contact your wildlife agency or a qualified professional before attempting exclusion, trapping, or relocation.

A practical decision checklist

Use this sequence after any suspected spraying:

  1. Distance: leash the dog and move away from the skunk.
  2. Medical screen: check eyes, mouth, breathing, wounds, and overall behavior.
  3. Professional call: contact a veterinarian immediately for eye or mouth spray, a bite, breathing difficulty, or signs of severe illness.
  4. Containment: keep the dog outside or in a cleanable area.
  5. Cleaning choice: use the fresh 3% peroxide recipe or a labeled commercial pet remover, considering coat color and nearby fabrics.
  6. Observation: monitor for one to three days and act promptly on weakness, lethargy, poor appetite, vomiting that persists, or dark mucous membranes.
  7. Prevention: secure food and shelter, supervise nighttime outings, and obtain local wildlife help for dens or trapped animals.

The odor is unpleasant, but it is usually the manageable part of the incident. Eye or mouth exposure, a bite, breathing problems, or delayed weakness are the reasons to stop cleaning and involve a professional.
