Dog State or Cat State? What the U.S. Data Really Shows

There is no single dog-state ranking. Historical pet counts, rental policies, and search interest produce different results—and none is a current household-ownership census.

There is no single, current “dog state” or “cat state” ranking. The answer changes according to what is measured: the number of animals, household ownership, rental listings that permit pets, or online search interest. Those measures answer different questions and should not be blended into one claim about where Americans actually keep dogs or cats.

Historical pet-population data once put Massachusetts at the cat end of the scale and Arkansas at the dog end. A September 2024 analysis of rental listings found Montana most dog-leaning and Massachusetts most cat-leaning by permission policies. A separate, secondary account of a 2026 search-interest project reported 27 dog-leaning and 23 cat-leaning states. None of those findings is a definitive 2026 household-ownership ranking.

What does “dog state” or “cat state” mean?

People use the labels casually, but a state can be “dog” or “cat” depending on the indicator used. A population count measures individual animals. An ownership survey measures households that have one or more pets. A rental analysis measures what landlords allow in advertised homes. Search data measures what people look for online. The same state can lead one list and trail another without any contradiction.

Before accepting a ranking, ask four questions:

  • What is counted? Animals, households, searches, or rental advertisements.
  • When was it measured? Pet-population figures may be historical, while listing and search results have specific collection windows.
  • How is “more” calculated? A raw total, a ratio, a percentage of listings, or a relative index can produce different leaders.
  • What can the result support? Ownership claims require ownership data; housing-policy findings support statements about landlords; search results indicate interest rather than possession.

The most accurate answer to “Do you live in a dog state or a cat state?” is therefore conditional: you live in the type of state described by the metric you choose.

Three different maps of the United States

Pet population comparison Estimated cats and dogs 2015 report: Massachusetts nearly twice as many cats as dogs; Arkansas had the highest dog-to-cat ratio Current ownership, because the figures are historical and the underlying data year is not stated

The historical pet-population picture

What the 2015 comparison reported

A realtor.com article published July 29, 2015, using American Veterinary Medical Association pet-population data, reported approximately 74 million cats and 70 million dogs in the United States. The page did not specify the vintage of the underlying AVMA data, so those totals should be read as a snapshot from that period rather than a current census.

At the state level, Massachusetts had nearly twice as many cats as dogs in the comparison. Arkansas ranked first for the dog-to-cat ratio, making it the strongest “dog state” under that particular calculation. The article also stated that data for Alaska and Hawaii were unavailable. That omission means the historical comparison was not a complete 50-state picture.

Why animal totals and ratios tell different stories

A large state may have more dogs and more cats in absolute numbers simply because it has more residents. A ratio asks a different question: how many dogs are present for each cat, or vice versa. Massachusetts could have a substantial cat population while still having fewer total pets than a much larger state; its defining feature in the 2015 article was the balance between cats and dogs, not necessarily the largest raw cat count nationwide.

Household ownership also differs from an animal total. One household with four cats contributes four animals but only one cat-owning household. Without a consistent, recent survey of households in every state, the historical figures cannot establish how many homes currently own each species.

What rental listings reveal about pet-friendly states

The September 2024 listing analysis

HireAHelper analyzed Zillow rental listings in September 2024 and compared the number of advertisements that allowed dogs with those that allowed cats. Its article was updated May 20, 2025. The result: 38 states had more dog-friendly listings, while 12 had more cat-friendly listings.

Under that rental-permission measure, Montana was the most dog-leaning state and Massachusetts was the most cat-leaning. “Dog-friendly” means a larger share or number of the analyzed listings stated that dogs were allowed; it does not mean that Montana renters own more dogs than cats. Likewise, Massachusetts’s position on the cat side reflects the wording of rental advertisements, not a new count of cats in homes.

Why listing rules are useful but limited

Rental policies matter to anyone moving with a pet. A state where more advertised homes accept dogs may offer a wider search pool for a dog-owning renter, even if the state’s overall pet population is unknown. However, an online listing is not the same as an available home a particular renter can secure. Buildings can impose weight limits, breed restrictions, pet deposits, monthly fees, or approval requirements that a simple “dogs allowed” label does not capture.

The sample also represents listings visible on Zillow during a defined period. It does not include every rental, every landlord, or homes that were occupied before a search began. Market mix can change as listings enter and leave the site. Use the result as a housing-policy signal, not as a demographic ranking.

What search interest says about dogs and cats

The reported 2025–2026 search window

A secondary account published September 5, 2026, described a MetLife-sponsored Fractl project that compared relative Google search volume from June 2025 through May 2026. The account says the project used 40 matched pairs of dog- and cat-related queries across all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and 55 metropolitan areas. Each pair was weighted equally, and each location’s lean was compared with the national average.

That account reported 27 dog-leaning states and 23 cat-leaning states. Because the primary study has not been independently verified here, those figures should be attributed to the secondary report rather than treated as an authoritative national index.

Why searches are not a pet census

Search behavior can reflect many things besides ownership. A person may research dog breeds for a future adoption, look up cat allergies for a family member, compare veterinary costs, or search after seeing a news story. Search volume also varies with terminology, seasonal events, and internet use. A relative index can show that dog-related queries are unusually prominent in one state compared with the national baseline, but it cannot tell you how many dogs or cats live there.

Why the rankings conflict

The three sets of findings use different denominators and dates. The 2015 comparison concerns estimated animals and a dog-to-cat ratio. The 2024 rental study concerns advertising language and permission policies. The 2025–2026 project concerns relative online interest. A state can rank as cat-heavy in a population ratio while having more dog-permitting rentals, or show strong dog search interest without having more dog-owning households.

Geography and coverage differ as well. The historical article lacked Alaska and Hawaii data. The rental analysis counted listings represented on one platform during one month. The search project included D.C. and metropolitan areas in addition to states, and its details come from a secondary account. These are not interchangeable samples.

How to decide what the label means for you

If you are comparing pet populations

  1. Look for a recent, transparent survey that reports state-level household ownership, not just national animal totals.
  2. Check whether the survey separates households from the number of animals and explains its sampling method.
  3. Confirm that all states are covered and that the data year is identified.
  4. Use ratios only when you want to compare the balance of dogs and cats, not the overall size of a state’s pet population.

If you are moving with a dog or cat

  1. Use rental-permission data to identify promising markets, but treat it as a starting filter.
  2. Open individual listings and read restrictions on size, breed, number of animals, deposits, and recurring fees.
  3. Ask the landlord or property manager to confirm the policy in writing before paying an application fee.
  4. Check local veterinary access, emergency-care availability, transportation, and nearby pet-friendly housing rather than relying on a state label.

If you are curious about local interest

Search-interest rankings can be a snapshot of what people in a location are exploring. Compare the exact query set, time window, normalization method, and national baseline before drawing conclusions. Do not convert a “dog-leaning” search index into a statement that most residents own dogs.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Calling a dated result current. The 2015 animal figures are historical, and the AVMA data year is not specified on the cited page.
  • Confusing permission with possession. A landlord allowing dogs does not show that tenants keep dogs.
  • Mixing raw totals with ratios. “Most dogs” and “highest dogs-per-cat ratio” are different claims.
  • Ignoring missing coverage. The historical comparison did not provide Alaska or Hawaii figures.
  • Treating an online index as a survey. Relative searches measure attention, not the number of pets in homes.
  • Inferring causes without evidence. The cited comparisons do not establish that climate, politics, culture, or housing costs caused a state to lean toward dogs or cats.

So, do you live in a dog state or a cat state?

If “state” means the historical pet-population comparison, Massachusetts was the clearest cat example and Arkansas the clearest dog example, with Alaska and Hawaii unreported. If it means rental permissions measured in September 2024, Montana led on dog-friendly listings and Massachusetts on cat-friendly listings, with a 38-to-12 state split favoring dog-permitting advertisements. If it means the reported 2025–2026 search-interest index, the secondary account described a narrower 27-to-23 dog-versus-cat split.

Those answers can all be true because they describe different realities. No current, complete, authoritative state-by-state household-ownership ranking is established by these sources. The responsible answer is to name the metric, date, geography, and calculation before calling anywhere a dog state or a cat state.
