Keep summer outings safer by choosing cooler hours, offering shade and fresh water, checking pavement, and never leaving your dog alone in a parked car. Every dog can overheat; short-muzzled, older, overweight, thick- or dark-coated, and medically vulnerable dogs may face greater risk. Heatstroke is an emergency: move your dog somewhere cool, begin cooling with cool water, and contact or travel to a veterinary hospital immediately.
1. Plan walks and exercise for cooler hours
Walk early in the morning or in the evening, when temperatures are generally lower. Avoid strenuous exercise during hot or humid conditions, especially when the weather has turned hot suddenly or your dog has not had time to acclimate. Heat, humidity, exertion, and a dog’s individual vulnerabilities all affect overheating risk. If it is too hot for a comfortable walk, shorten or skip it and choose indoor activity instead. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and the American Veterinary Medical Association recommend taking precautions in warm weather.

2. Bring water, find shade, and take breaks
Offer frequent chances to drink, and pack fresh water and a collapsible dog water bowl for outings. Pause in the shade and let your dog rest; do not press on just to finish a route or play session. During extreme heat or humidity, keep your dog indoors in a cool environment rather than relying on frequent breaks outside. Avoid letting a dog gulp large amounts of water from pools, lakes, or the ocean: excessive fresh-water or saltwater ingestion can make dogs ill. Cornell’s summer safety guidance covers hydration and water-related risks.

Hot asphalt can burn paw pads and add to a dog’s heat burden. Choose grass or a shaded route when possible, and change the time or route if the ground is hot. Cornell offers a rough rule of thumb: if you cannot keep your hand on the pavement or stand barefoot on it for about 10 seconds, it is likely too hot for your dog. This is not a precise safety test, and conditions can vary across a route. Boots may reduce paw contact with hot surfaces, but they do not make an overheated walk safe. Cornell and the American Kennel Club discuss paw protection.

4. Never leave your dog alone in a parked car
A cracked window or a shady parking spot does not make a parked car safe for an unattended dog. Cornell reports that when the outdoor temperature is 70°F, a car can rise by 40°F in an hour, with most of that increase occurring in the first 15–30 minutes. The figure is from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine’s guidance accessed in 2026; the page’s publication year was not stated in the search result. Leave your dog at home if an errand could require leaving them in the vehicle. Cornell’s dog summer safety page and the AVMA warn against leaving pets in hot cars.
5. Recognize heatstroke and get veterinary help immediately
Heavy panting, drooling, seeking shade, or reluctance to play can be signs that a dog is overheating. Weakness, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, confusion, seizures, or collapse are serious signs requiring emergency veterinary care. Cornell describes heatstroke at a body temperature of 105°F or higher, but do not wait to measure a temperature or reach that threshold if your dog is showing serious symptoms. Cornell’s heatstroke guidance describes the condition as life-threatening.

- Move your dog to a cool place.
- Begin cooling with cool water.
- Contact a veterinary hospital and arrange immediate care; travel there urgently when heatstroke is suspected.
Cooling at home is a step to take while arranging veterinary care, not a substitute for it. Follow the veterinary team’s directions as you travel or wait for help.
6. Supervise swimming and water play
Stay close whenever your dog is in or near water, and provide fresh drinking water so they are less likely to drink from a pool, lake, or ocean. Avoid water that is not clear, cool, and moving; cyanobacteria can be dangerous. For a dog swimming in an adult pool, the AKC recommends a canine life vest for added flotation support, but a vest does not replace supervision. Cornell and the AKC outline summer water precautions.

7. Reduce sun and yard hazards
Short-haired dogs and dogs with pink skin or white hair may be more vulnerable to sunburn. Ask your veterinarian what sun protection is suitable for your dog rather than assuming a human product is appropriate. Store lawn and garden chemicals safely, follow the label’s directions about when pets can return to treated areas, and check that plants in your garden are safe for pets. Keep your dog current on the parasite prevention your veterinarian recommends. The AKC’s summer safety guidance and the AVMA’s warm-weather advice address these seasonal precautions.
