Dog Warts: When They Need Removal and What Vets Do

Many dog warts regress without treatment, but a wart-like bump needs veterinary assessment when it is uncertain, persistent, irritated, bleeding, or interfering with normal function.

Many dog warts are viral papillomas that shrink on their own, but a bump that looks like a wart may be another kind of growth. Have a veterinarian assess a new, changing, persistent, bleeding, or irritated lump before deciding to monitor or remove it. Do not cut, freeze, or use human wart treatments on it at home.

What is a dog papilloma?

A papilloma is a wart caused by canine papillomavirus. It may have a firm, hardened, cauliflower-like surface, and dogs can develop them on the skin or mucous membranes, including inside the mouth. Appearance alone cannot confirm that a growth is a papilloma: other tumors can look similar. Merck Veterinary Manual explains that diagnosis may require identifying the virus or its effects on cells (Merck Veterinary Manual: Tumors of the Skin in Dogs; Merck Veterinary Manual: Epidermal and Hair Follicle Tumors in Animals).

What causes them, and can dogs catch them from each other?

Canine papillomaviruses spread between dogs through direct contact and contaminated surroundings. Shared bedding, dishes, clothing, and other objects can carry the virus. VCA Animal Hospitals also describes entry through moist skin or small breaks such as cuts and abrasions. Insects are a possible route noted by Merck, but that possibility is not established as firmly as contact transmission.

Keep a dog with visible papillomas away from other dogs until the lesions are gone, where practical. Contact may already have happened before a wart becomes noticeable. Canine papillomaviruses are species-specific, so these dog papillomas are not considered a risk to people or other species (VCA Animal Hospitals: Papilloma of the Skin; Merck Veterinary Manual: Tumors of the Skin in Dogs).

Which dogs are more likely to develop papillomas?

Age and immune status describe tendencies, not a way to diagnose an individual bump. Multiple viral warts are reported more often in young dogs, including puppies with immature immune systems; immunocompromised dogs may also be more prone. A single growth is more common in older dogs and may not be viral. Merck notes that skin warts are common in Cocker Spaniels and Kerry Blue Terriers. None of these patterns establishes what a particular lump is.

How does a veterinarian diagnose a wart-like growth?

A veterinarian will consider the growth’s appearance, number, location, and history, but a photo or cauliflower-like shape cannot rule out a look-alike. Depending on the case, the veterinarian may use fine-needle aspiration or take a biopsy for microscopic examination. Ask for an examination if a bump is new or changing rather than assuming it is a wart (VCA Animal Hospitals: Papilloma of the Skin).

Do dog warts go away without treatment?

Many papillomas regress as the dog’s immune response develops. The timing varies: VCA reports that some regress in one to two months, while Merck describes oral papillomas resolving over weeks to months. These are approximate descriptions, not a deadline or guarantee. A veterinarian may recommend monitoring when the diagnosis is sufficiently likely and the lesion is not causing problems (Merck Veterinary Manual: Tumors of the Skin in Dogs; VCA Animal Hospitals: Papilloma of the Skin; Merck Veterinary Manual: Oral Papillomas in Dogs).

When might a veterinarian remove a dog wart?

Removal is considered case by case—not simply because a growth looks unpleasant. Relevant factors include whether the diagnosis is clear, whether the lesion is growing or damaged, and whether its position affects the dog’s comfort or normal function.

  • Persistent or problematic growth: Removal may be considered if a lesion persists, becomes inflamed or infected, bleeds, or is sufficiently objectionable.
  • Interference with normal function: Oral growths may impede chewing or swallowing. Location can also make a lesion troublesome in other ways, such as affecting vision or walking.
  • Timing: Merck cautions that removing warts while they are still in an early growth stage may lead to recurrence or stimulate further growth. A veterinarian may prefer to wait until a lesion is near its maximum size or beginning to regress.

When an oral lesion needs intervention, a veterinarian may debulk it using methods such as laser, electrosurgery, radiosurgery, or sharp resection. The appropriate method depends on the lesion and the dog; these are clinical procedures, not home-removal options. Veterinary sources also mention medications in selected cases, but treatment choice and any medication belong with the veterinarian after assessment (Merck Veterinary Manual: Tumors of the Skin in Dogs; Merck Veterinary Manual: Oral Papillomas in Dogs; Merck Veterinary Manual: Disorders of the Mouth in Dogs).

What should you do at home—and what should you avoid?

  • Prevent self-trauma: Try to stop rubbing, scratching, licking, or biting at the growth. This can cause inflammation, ulceration, infection, or bleeding. A protective collar may help if appropriate and recommended by your veterinarian; it does not treat or remove the growth.
  • Do not attempt removal: Do not cut, tie off, freeze, cauterize, or apply human wart-removal preparations to a suspected dog wart. A look-alike may need a different diagnosis, and the veterinary sources do not establish consumer wart products as safe or effective for dogs.
  • Follow surgical aftercare instructions: If a veterinarian removes a lesion, VCA advises keeping the incision clean and dry. Contact the clinic about significant swelling, bleeding, or lost sutures.

These steps are based on VCA’s guidance on preventing irritation and caring for a surgical incision (VCA Animal Hospitals: Papilloma of the Skin).
