Dogs can have a little plain banana pancake as an occasional treat, provided the ingredients suit them and the pancake is cooked through and cooled. Try either of these two small-batch recipes; neither is a complete meal, and a dog’s health and diet may make pancakes unsuitable.

Choose a recipe

These are alternatives from Battersea Dogs & Cats Home and Animal Trust Vets CIC, not tested variations or a guarantee that every dog will tolerate them. Both use banana and egg, but differ in flour and liquid.

Recipe Ingredients Yield Source
Battersea 1 banana, 60 g plain or wholemeal flour, 60 ml unsweetened oat milk, and 1 egg 4 small pancakes Battersea Dogs & Cats Home
Animal Trust 1 large egg, 1 ripe banana (or ¼ cup mashed cooked sweet potato), ¼ cup water, and ¼ cup oat flour. Rice flour or whole-wheat flour may be substituted. 4–6 small pancakes Animal Trust Vets CIC

How to make the pancakes

Battersea version

  1. Mash the banana. Whisk the egg, then mix it with the banana and unsweetened oat milk.
  2. Blend or mix in the flour until combined.
  3. Heat a lightly oiled frying pan over medium-high heat. Cook small pancakes for about 1–2 minutes per side, until golden.
  4. Let them cool before serving. Battersea says leftovers may be kept in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two days.

Animal Trust version

  1. Mash the ripe banana and mix it with the egg, water, and oat flour. If using the stated alternative, substitute mashed cooked sweet potato for the banana; rice flour or whole-wheat flour can replace oat flour.
  2. Cook silver-dollar-size pancakes in a pan over low to medium heat for 1–2 minutes per side.
  3. Cool completely before serving.

Animal Trust’s recipe leaves out milk, added salt, sugar, chocolate, and leavening. Keep either recipe plain; do not add ingredients just because they are common in human pancake recipes.

Serve only a small, occasional portion

Offer a small piece rather than treating the recipe’s yield as a serving recommendation. There is no universally established safe pancake count by dog size. Pancakes are treats, not a daily meal or a replacement for a balanced diet. PetMD describes pancakes as low-nutrition “empty calories” and recommends very limited, infrequent servings in its guidance on dogs and pancakes.

PetMD’s 2026 banana guidance says treats, including banana, should account for no more than 10% of a dog’s daily calories. That is general treat guidance, not a pancake-specific serving calculation; the recipe sources do not provide dog-specific calorie portions. See PetMD’s banana guidance.

Ingredients and dogs that need extra care

  • Use peeled banana flesh, not the peel. PetMD says banana is suitable for most dogs in moderation, but too much natural sugar can contribute to digestive upset or weight concerns.
  • Never add chocolate or nutmeg. PetMD lists these among ingredients pancakes for dogs should not contain. Avoid sugary or other rich toppings, too; plain is the safer choice.
  • Animal Trust suggests a tiny smear of xylitol-free peanut butter as an optional topping. If you cannot confirm it contains no xylitol, do not use it; plain pancakes need no topping.
  • Ask your veterinarian before offering pancakes to a dog with diabetes, weight concerns, another medical condition, or a prescribed or therapeutic diet. Battersea specifically says its recipe is not suitable for dogs with special dietary requirements.

Banana can be appropriate for many dogs, but that does not make every pancake ingredient or portion appropriate for every individual. If in doubt, leave the treat out and follow your veterinarian’s advice.
