The four intestinal parasite groups most often discussed in dogs are roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms. They are not interchangeable: dogs acquire them in different ways, they cause different kinds of injury, and the tests that find one may miss another. A dog can also carry a parasite without obvious signs, so a normal-looking stool or coat does not rule infection out.

The safest approach is veterinarian-guided parasite control, routine fecal testing, and immediate removal of dog feces. Call a veterinarian promptly if you see worms or segments, persistent diarrhea, blood in the stool, weight loss, vomiting, weakness, or any sudden change in a dog’s condition. Symptoms alone cannot identify the parasite.

The four common intestinal parasites in dogs

The table below shows the practical differences owners need to understand. “No signs” does not mean a parasite is absent, and one negative test does not always exclude infection.

Parasite group How dogs acquire it and what it can do Diagnosis and prevention priorities
Roundworms (ascarids) Dogs may swallow infective eggs from contaminated surroundings or acquire larvae by eating infected hosts. Some infections are silent; persistent infection can contaminate the environment with parasites that can affect people. CAPC recommends fecal flotation with centrifugation. Antigen or PCR testing can help in immature, low-burden, or single-sex infections. Prompt feces removal reduces contamination.
Hookworms Hookworms attach to the small intestine and feed on blood. They can cause acute or chronic anemia, diarrhea, and intestinal injury. Animal hookworms have zoonotic potential, including cutaneous larva migrans. Fecal flotation is recommended; antigen or PCR may broaden detection. Treat suspected illness urgently, particularly in puppies, and maintain year-round control selected by a veterinarian.
Whipworms Infection may be subclinical, but disease can include bloody diarrhea, weight loss, and dehydration. Eggs may not be visible early because the prepatent period is long, and mature eggs can persist in soil for years. Fecal flotation is recommended. Antigen testing can help when eggs are absent. Environmental hygiene and veterinary-directed control are important because the eggs are durable.
Tapeworms (including Taenia) Dogs can acquire Taenia by eating infected prey or scavenged vertebrates. Reinfection is likely if that exposure continues. Owners may notice rice-like segments, but many infections cause few other signs. Flotation alone is unreliable: segments are unevenly distributed and eggs do not consistently float. The veterinarian may use the history and visible segments, then pair treatment with prey and scavenging management.

Roundworms: environmental eggs and hidden infections

Roundworms, also called ascarids, spread when a dog swallows infective eggs in contaminated soil or feces, or eats an infected host. Because eggs accumulate where dogs live and eliminate, an infected animal can continue to seed its surroundings even when it appears healthy.

Clinical signs vary with the dog’s age, parasite burden, and stage of infection. Some dogs have no outward signs. A heavier or persistent infection can contribute to digestive upset and poor condition, while contaminated environments create a potential exposure for people as well as other dogs. Do not infer that a dog is clear because no worm is visible in vomit or stool.

Microscopic fecal flotation with centrifugation is a recommended starting test. Antigen or PCR testing may add information when worms are immature, the burden is low, or only one sex is present and eggs are not being shed. A veterinarian chooses the combination based on the dog’s history and examination.

Hookworms: the parasite that can cause dangerous blood loss

Hookworms attach to the lining of the small intestine and consume blood. Infection can therefore produce anemia that develops quickly or persists over time. Diarrhea and intestinal damage may accompany the blood loss. Puppies are especially vulnerable because they have less reserve; a weak, pale, or rapidly declining puppy needs urgent veterinary attention rather than watchful waiting.

Hookworm larvae and eggs in the environment also matter for human health. Animal hookworms can cause cutaneous larva migrans, in which migrating larvae produce itchy skin lesions. Removing feces promptly and following a veterinarian’s control plan protects both dogs and people.

Fecal flotation is useful, but microscopic examination alone can miss some infections. CAPC describes fecal antigen or PCR testing as additional tools and notes that combining those tests with microscopy can broaden detection. A negative result should be interpreted alongside the dog’s signs, age, exposure, and prior treatment.

Whipworms: long delays before eggs appear

Whipworms can cause large-bowel disease, including bloody diarrhea, weight loss, and dehydration. Other dogs remain subclinical. The prepatent period is long, so a newly infected dog may be ill or infectious before eggs are readily detected in feces. That timing is a major reason a single negative flotation does not always settle the question.

CAPC recommends fecal flotation and notes that an antigen test can help when whipworm eggs are not yet apparent. Once shed, the eggs can persist in the environment for years, making contaminated soil a continuing source of exposure. Thorough feces removal and a veterinarian-directed preventive schedule are therefore more useful than treating only when an owner sees a worm.

CAPC reported whipworms in as many as 14.3% of sampled U.S. shelter dogs in 2025. It also reported a figure of 10% among dogs presented to veterinary teaching hospitals. These are statistics for those sampled populations, not prevalence estimates for all pet dogs.

Tapeworms: prey exposure drives reinfection

Dogs acquire Taenia tapeworms by eating infected prey or scavenged vertebrates. A dog that continues hunting, scavenging, or receiving raw animal tissues can become reinfected after treatment. Breaking that exposure cycle is part of care, not an optional add-on.

Segments may be visible around the anus, in bedding, or in stool, but their absence does not exclude infection. Tapeworm eggs and segments are distributed unevenly in feces, and the eggs do not consistently float. For that reason, a routine flotation can be negative even when tapeworm infection is present. Tell the veterinarian about visible segments and the dog’s access to prey or carcasses.

CAPC lists praziquantel and epsiprantel among approved active ingredients for particular Taenia infections. The appropriate drug, dose, repeat schedule, and product indication depend on the diagnosed parasite and the individual dog. Treatment without exposure control invites reinfection.

How can you tell whether a dog has worms?

You usually cannot identify the parasite from appearance alone. Dogs with intestinal worms may look normal, while diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss, coughing, a dull coat, or a swollen abdomen can have many causes besides parasites. Even blood in stool is not specific enough to distinguish whipworms, hookworms, other gastrointestinal disease, or an emergency.

Contact a veterinarian when you notice any of the following:

  • Worms or moving segments in stool, vomit, bedding, or around the anus.
  • Persistent or recurrent diarrhea, especially if it contains blood.
  • Unexplained weight loss, poor growth, reduced appetite, or a distended abdomen.
  • Vomiting, marked tiredness, weakness, pale gums, or collapse.
  • A puppy that is deteriorating, has diarrhea, or seems weak.
  • Known access to infected prey, carcasses, heavily contaminated soil, or another animal with a diagnosed parasite.

Weakness or pallor raises particular concern about hookworm-associated anemia. Do not delay care while waiting to see a worm.

How veterinarians diagnose intestinal parasites

Fecal flotation with centrifugation

CAPC recommends fecal flotation with centrifugation for several canine parasite groups. The laboratory concentrates parasite stages so they can be examined microscopically. This is a useful core test, not an infallible all-purpose screen.

Why one negative sample may not be enough

Results depend on whether the parasite is shedding detectable stages on the day of collection, the infection’s maturity, the burden, and the test’s ability to recover that stage. Whipworm eggs may be absent during the long prepatent period. Roundworms may be immature, low in number, or single-sex. Tapeworm segments and eggs are especially easy to miss with flotation alone.

Antigen and PCR testing

Fecal antigen tests and PCR can detect selected infections when eggs are absent or difficult to find. For hookworms, CAPC describes combining antigen or PCR with microscopic examination to broaden detection. The veterinarian decides which test is justified by the dog’s signs, risk factors, and previous results.

History and visible evidence

What the dog eats and where it goes can be as important as the laboratory result. A segment noticed by an owner, a history of hunting, or repeated exposure to contaminated ground may change the diagnostic plan. Bring those observations to the appointment rather than relying on a photograph or an over-the-counter treatment label to identify the species.

How intestinal parasites are treated

Treatment is parasite-specific. There is no universal dose or single over-the-counter dewormer that should be assumed to cover all four groups. A veterinarian considers the suspected or confirmed species, the dog’s age and health, pregnancy status when relevant, concurrent medicines, and the product’s approved indication.

For tapeworms, approved active ingredients include praziquantel and epsiprantel for particular Taenia infections, but the product choice and dosing instructions must come from the veterinarian. A tapeworm treatment without stopping prey or scavenging exposure often leads to reinfection.

Best Value
Panacur C Canine Dewormer (Fenbendazole), 4 Gram, 3 Count (Pack of 1), Red
  • Mix the daily dose with a small amount of your dog’s usual food. Your dog should eat all of the medicated food. If feeding dry dog food, it may need to be moistened to aid mixing
  • Repeat the daily dose for 3 days in a row (each packet is a daily dose depending on your dog's size)
  • If dog's weight is in-between suggested dosing sizes, it's safe to use the next higher size. For example a 15 pound dog should be treated with the 2gm packet
  • Safe for all dogs 6 weeks and older, including pregnant dogs
  • Deworming schedules may vary depending on the climate where you live and the activity of your dog

Hookworm disease may require urgent supportive care as well as an anthelmintic when anemia or dehydration is present. Puppies and visibly ill dogs should be examined rather than dosed based on a guess. Follow-up testing or repeat treatment may be recommended when the parasite’s life cycle or the initial test’s limitations make one visit insufficient.

Prevention that works in daily life

Use veterinarian-guided, year-round control

CAPC recommends year-round broad-spectrum parasite control, with coverage selected for the dog’s local risks and lifestyle. “Broad-spectrum” does not mean every product treats every parasite in every formulation, so verify the label and schedule with the veterinarian.

Test on a schedule that reflects age and exposure

CAPC recommends at least four fecal examinations during the first year of life and at least two examinations per year for healthy adult dogs. The veterinarian may adjust that frequency for illness, travel, shelter or kennel exposure, hunting, scavenging, household risk, or local parasite patterns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start puppy control early

CAPC recommends beginning anthelmintic treatment in puppies at two weeks of age and repeating it every two weeks until regular broad-spectrum control begins. The puppy’s veterinarian should set the exact product and transition schedule.

Remove feces quickly

Pick up feces immediately in public areas and at least daily from the yard. This limits the buildup of roundworm and hookworm contamination and helps prevent people, pets, and wildlife from encountering infectious stages. Waste bags make removal practical, but they do not diagnose, treat, or independently prevent infection.

Reduce prey and scavenging access

Prevent hunting and scavenging where feasible, and do not allow access to carcasses or other vertebrates that could carry Taenia. This step is essential when tapeworm reinfection is suspected.

A practical action plan for owners

  1. Record what you observed. Note the date, stool changes, visible worms or segments, vomiting, appetite, weight change, weakness, and any prey or scavenging exposure.
  2. Call the veterinarian. Seek urgent care for a weak, pale, collapsing, or severely ill dog, especially a puppy.
  3. Ask which fecal tests are appropriate. The plan may include centrifuged flotation plus antigen or PCR testing, depending on the suspected parasite.
  4. Use only the prescribed treatment. Follow the exact label and repeat instructions; do not combine dewormers or estimate a dose.
  5. Break the exposure cycle. Remove feces promptly, restrict scavenging, and maintain the preventive schedule recommended for your dog.
  6. Keep scheduled fecal checks. Testing is part of ongoing control because infection can be silent and parasites may be missed at particular stages.
