The evidence for cats is much thinner: one study found a reaction to a toy cat after an owner petted it, yet its authors said the results were not enough to conclude that cats experience jealousy.
So neither extreme is justified. A pet that pushes between you and another animal may be responding to a valued social interaction, competition for attention, excitement, anxiety, or simple curiosity. “Jealousy-like” describes an observed pattern in a particular situation; it does not prove what the animal privately feels.

What “jealousy” means in animal studies
Human jealousy usually involves three parts: a valued relationship, a perceived rival, and a threat that the relationship or attention may be lost. An experiment can arrange those circumstances and record what an animal does—looking at the owner, approaching, interrupting, vocalizing, or showing aggression. It cannot directly ask whether the animal experiences the same conscious emotion a person describes as jealousy.

A dog that wedges between an owner and another dog could be seeking contact, reacting to movement, guarding a resource, or responding to a learned routine. A cat that approaches when its owner handles a toy cat may be investigating a novel object rather than defending a social bond. The safest scientific wording is therefore behavior consistent with jealousy, not proof of jealousy.

What experiments with dogs have found
2014: an early fake-dog experiment
Christine Harris and Caroline Prouvost’s 2014 PLOS ONE experiment compared owners’ affectionate interaction with a realistic fake dog against interaction with nonsocial objects. The dogs displayed more behaviors the investigators classified as jealousy-related during the fake-dog condition. That result supports the possibility of a basic jealousy-like response when an owner appears to engage a rival.
The design still leaves important questions. A realistic moving or attention-grabbing object can be more stimulating than a book or another nonsocial item. The experiment demonstrates a difference between conditions; it does not demonstrate a human-like private feeling.
2018: two experiments that did not find a clear rival effect
Amat and colleagues tested 36 dogs in each of two experiments in a PLOS ONE study published online in 2018. Owners and unfamiliar people attended to a book, a puppet, and a fake dog. The investigators found no clear indication that the dogs treated the fake dogs as social rivals, and several proposed jealousy-associated behaviors were absent or limited.

The people involved, the order and timing of interactions, the dogs’ histories, and the realism of the stimuli can all change what an animal notices. It does mean that a rival-specific response has not appeared reliably across controlled setups.
2021: evidence for representing an interaction, not just a rival
In a 2021 Psychological Science study, Bastos and colleagues observed 18 dogs in situations involving a perceived social rival. They reported three patterns consistent with jealousy:

- Heart, Liver & Immune Health - Multifunctional Bites feature powerful antioxidants, premium CoQ10, Cod Liver Oil and Vitamins A, C, & E to promote healthy cardiovascular function, support liver health and enhance immune response.
- Dogs responded when the owner interacted with the rival.
- The owner’s interaction, rather than the rival’s mere presence, was the relevant event.
- Dogs responded even when the interaction was out of sight, which is consistent with representing what was happening rather than reacting only to a visible object.
These findings are stronger than a simple “new object appears” explanation, but they still concern behavior. They cannot verify that a dog’s internal experience matches the human concept of jealousy.
2018: dogs living with a companion dog
Prato-Previde and colleagues studied households with two dogs. In control episodes, owners ignored both dogs. In experimental episodes, owners petted and praised one dog while ignoring the other. The dogs monitored the owner significantly longer during the experimental episodes.

The authors reported substantial individual variation and acknowledged limits in the setup. Monitoring an owner is an observable response; it is not uniquely diagnostic of jealousy.
2022: caregiver interaction with a fake dog
A study in Animals examined dogs while a caregiver interacted with a fake dog. The dogs changed their responses depending on the caregiver’s interaction, and the authors reported behavioral synchronization between dogs and caregivers. They did not find clear evidence of jealousy-like behavior during the human–fake-dog interactions.
The authors’ conclusion was deliberately cautious: the experiment did not provide clear evidence of jealousy-like behavior, although it did show synchronization with the caregiver. This result adds to the reason not to treat every interruption as proof of jealousy.

How the dog studies fit together
| Study | Participants and setup | Main result | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Harris and Prouvost, 2014 | Dogs; owner affection toward a realistic fake dog versus nonsocial objects | More behaviors classified as jealousy-related toward the fake dog | Whether dogs felt a human-like emotion or whether the fake dog’s realism and movement drove the response |
| Amat et al., 2018 | 36 dogs in each of two experiments; owners or strangers attended to a book, puppet, or fake dog | No clear rival-specific effect; several predicted behaviors were absent or limited | That dogs never respond to rivals in other settings |
| Prato-Previde et al., 2018 | Dogs living with another dog; owner praised one dog and ignored the other | More owner monitoring during the unequal-attention episodes, but no clear attention-regaining pattern | That monitoring represented jealousy rather than uncertainty, attention seeking, or another response |
| Bastos et al., 2021 | 18 dogs; owner interacted with a perceived rival, including an out-of-sight condition | Three behavioral signatures consistent with representing a jealousy-inducing interaction | The animal’s subjective feeling |
| Animals, 2022 | Dogs observing caregiver interaction with a fake dog | No clear jealousy-like behavior; behavioral synchronization was observed | How dogs would respond to a real household rival or different social contexts |
These samples are study counts, not estimates of how many dogs experience jealousy. No population-wide prevalence has been established.
Why results differ from one dog study to another
The “rival” may not be equally convincing
A realistic fake dog, a puppet, a book, and a real companion dog do not carry the same social information. If a dog does not treat an object as a social rival, a test built around that object may not activate the process being studied.
Interaction matters more than presence
Several designs separate the presence of another object from the owner actively engaging with it. A dog may ignore a rival that is simply sitting nearby but react when the owner pets, praises, or talks to it. That difference is central to a jealousy hypothesis, yet it can also reflect the dog’s learned interest in owner attention.
The person may matter
Some experiments use the owner; others include an unfamiliar person. A response that appears only when a valued caregiver is involved would support a relationship-specific interpretation, but inconsistent results mean that this question remains open.
Individual dogs are not interchangeable
Age, temperament, social history, training, household routines, and previous experience with other animals can all influence an interruption or approach. The companion-dog study specifically noted substantial individual variation. A group average cannot classify every dog in a home.

What is known about cats
Cat evidence is considerably more limited. Bucher and colleagues studied 52 cats from Japanese homes and cat cafés in a 2020 Pet Behaviour Science paper. Each cat encountered a soft-toy cat that its owner had petted and a furry cushion. Cats—especially household pets—reacted more intensely toward the toy cat than toward the cushion.
The result did not depend on whether the owner or an unfamiliar experimenter had petted the objects. The cats also did not show the broader set of behaviors that would make a jealousy interpretation stronger. The authors concluded that the absence of other behaviors indicative of jealousy prevented firm conclusions about jealousy in domestic cats and called for more ecologically valid procedures.
That means the study found an object-directed reaction under a particular setup, not a prevalence rate and not proof that cats feel jealousy. Cat behavior cannot be inferred simply by transferring findings from dogs. Living environment also matters: a cat from a multi-cat household, a cat café, and a solitary household pet may have different experiences with competition and attention.

- Trigger: Note whether the behavior occurs when you pet another animal, greet a person, handle a toy, feed someone else, or merely bring an object into the room.
- Target: Record whether your pet approaches you, the other animal, the object, or all three.
- Sequence: Write down what happens before and after the behavior. A push followed by relaxed contact is different from escalating guarding or a bite attempt.
- Body language: Look at posture, facial tension, tail position, ears, vocalization, and recovery time together rather than treating one signal as decisive.
- Consistency: See whether the pattern repeats across days and contexts. A one-off reaction to a novel object is weak evidence for a stable emotional pattern.
Even a repeated pattern remains compatible with several explanations. The observations can tell you when your pet becomes aroused or seeks access to you; they cannot identify a private emotion with certainty.

How to respond when a pet interrupts attention
Protect safety first
If a dog or cat stiffens, chases, snaps, bites, or attacks another animal, calmly create distance and prevent another confrontation. Do not put your hands between fighting animals. A behavior that may look like jealousy can also be resource guarding, fear, pain, or conflict over space, all of which deserve a safety-focused response.
Change the setup instead of testing the pet
Do not deliberately provoke a reaction with a fake animal or by repeatedly withholding attention to see whether jealousy appears. The cited experiments used such objects as controlled stimuli; they did not establish them as home tests, treatments, or products that reveal an animal’s feelings.
Make attention predictable
When practical, give each animal calm, separate interaction and avoid rewarding pushing, swatting, or vocal escalation with immediate attention. Reinforce relaxed behavior when you can do so safely. If conflict persists, a veterinarian can check for medical contributors, and a qualified behavior professional can help design a plan for the specific household.
What remains unknown
The experiments do not answer whether dogs or cats experience jealousy in the richly self-aware, human sense. They also do not tell us how a particular pet will respond to a new baby, partner, visitor, or animal. Laboratory props and tightly controlled interactions are useful for isolating variables, but they simplify the social situations that occur in homes.
A 2024 review of common misconceptions about domestic-cat social behavior in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery is a useful reminder that human assumptions can shape how people interpret cats. It does not, by itself, prove that the cat-study result was mere projection. The appropriate conclusion is narrower: interpretations should stay tied to the behavior and conditions actually observed.
The most accurate answer
Dogs are neither simply “jealous” nor merely blank screens for human projection. Several experiments have found responses that fit a jealousy hypothesis, while other controlled studies have not found a clear rival-specific effect. For cats, the direct evidence consists of a small literature and one preliminary experiment whose authors explicitly stopped short of concluding that cats experience jealousy.
When describing your own pet, say what you observed—such as monitoring, approaching, interrupting, or conflict when attention shifted—and treat jealousy as one possible interpretation rather than a diagnosis. That wording respects both the animal’s behavior and the limits of what experiments can establish.
