Dogs in Hot Cars: Summer Heatstroke, Water and Firework Safety

Never leave a dog in a parked car. Learn the emergency signs of heatstroke and practical ways to keep dogs safer around hot pavement, pools, boats, fireworks and summer toxins.

Never leave a dog in a parked car, even for a short errand, with the windows open or in the shade. Vehicles can become dangerously hot quickly, and heatstroke can be fatal. Summer safety also means limiting exertion and hot-surface exposure, supervising every swim, securing dogs during fireworks, and preventing access to seasonal toxins. If your dog shows signs of heatstroke, treat it as an emergency and go to an emergency veterinarian immediately.

Why a parked car is never a safe place for a dog

A parked vehicle is an uncontrolled heat trap. Shade moves, ventilation is limited, and cracked windows do not make the interior reliably safe. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) advises never leaving a pet in a vehicle, regardless of whether the car is shaded or the windows are open. It does not provide a universal “safe” outdoor temperature or a safe number of minutes, because conditions and each dog’s vulnerability vary.

The safest plan is to leave your dog at home in a cool, controlled environment when you need to run an errand. Air conditioning in a vehicle, a water bowl, or a promise that the stop will be brief should not be treated as a safety guarantee. A delay, a queue, a dead engine or a change in sun exposure can turn a planned quick stop into a medical crisis.

“Never leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle, even with the windows open, a parked automobile can become a furnace in no time, and heatstroke can develop, which is potentially fatal.”

Dr. Louise Murray, then Director of Medicine at ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital, quoted in an ASPCA press release

If you see a dog alone in a vehicle

Take the situation seriously. Note the vehicle location, license plate and visible condition of the dog, then contact local animal-control, emergency services or law enforcement according to your area’s procedures. Laws about unattended animals in vehicles differ by jurisdiction, so do not assume that an action permitted in one place is permitted in another. If the dog appears collapsed or in immediate danger, tell the dispatcher that it may be a heat emergency and follow the instructions you receive.

Recognizing heatstroke and acting immediately

Heatstroke is life-threatening. Warning signs can begin with anxiousness, restlessness, persistent or excessive panting, heavy drooling, weakness or unsteadiness. More severe signs include abnormal gum or tongue color, confusion, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, breathing difficulty, seizures or collapse. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and the AVMA both emphasize urgent veterinary care when these signs appear.

What to do when heatstroke is suspected

  1. Stop activity and move the dog out of the heat. Get into a cool, shaded or air-conditioned area while arranging veterinary help.
  2. Contact an emergency veterinarian immediately. Tell the clinic what happened, which signs you observed and when they began. Heatstroke can damage internal organs even if a dog seems better after cooling.
  3. Follow the clinic’s first-aid instructions during transport. Do not delay the trip to measure body temperature or to see whether symptoms resolve.
  4. Keep the dog under observation on the way. A collapsed, confused or breathing-distressed dog needs a person monitoring it while another person drives whenever possible.

Do not wait for every listed symptom. A dog that is persistently panting, drooling, weak, unsteady or behaving abnormally after heat exposure needs professional assessment. The absence of a thermometer reading does not make the situation less urgent.

Preventing overheating before symptoms start

Heat safety is mostly exposure management. Build the day around the coolest available conditions rather than trying to make strenuous activity safe after the dog is already hot.

  • Provide fresh drinking water and a shaded place to rest whenever your dog is outside.
  • Schedule walks and exercise for cooler parts of the day, and shorten or cancel them when heat or humidity makes exertion unsafe.
  • Take frequent breaks and stop at the first sign of unusual panting, fatigue or reluctance to continue.
  • Carry water and a collapsible bowl on outings, as Cornell recommends, but do not use gear to justify prolonged exposure or hard exercise.
  • Choose routes with shade and cooler surfaces instead of long stretches of exposed pavement.
  • Keep dogs in a cool indoor area during the hottest conditions when outdoor comfort cannot be maintained.

Risk is higher for short-nosed or flat-faced breeds, overweight dogs, elderly dogs and dogs with heart or lung disease. Flat-faced dogs cannot pant as effectively, and excess weight or cardiopulmonary disease can reduce a dog’s ability to cope with heat. Ask your veterinarian how your dog’s age, breed, body condition, medications and medical history should change its summer routine; there is no single temperature rule that fits every dog.

Hot pavement and paw burns

Asphalt and other hard surfaces can become hot enough to injure paw pads. The AVMA identifies hot asphalt as a burn hazard. A dog may continue walking despite an injury, so check paws rather than relying only on behavior.

Safer walking decisions

  • Walk on grass, soil or shaded paths when possible.
  • Use cooler morning or evening hours and avoid prolonged exposure on sun-heated surfaces.
  • Keep walks brief if the only available route is hot pavement.
  • After a walk, inspect pads for redness, discoloration, blisters, peeling or tenderness, and contact a veterinarian if you see burns or the dog is limping.

Boots can be useful for some dogs when introduced gradually, but they do not cool the rest of the body or make hot-weather exercise risk-free. Surface choice, timing, shade and reduced exertion remain the primary controls.

Water safety: pools, lakes, oceans and boats

Water can cool a dog, but it introduces drowning, poisoning and exhaustion risks. Not every dog is a capable swimmer, including some dogs that eagerly enter water. The ASPCA advises active supervision around pools and open water, gradual introductions, flotation devices on boats, preventing water ingestion where possible and rinsing dogs after swimming.

Before allowing a dog into water

  1. Assess the setting. Identify exits, currents, drop-offs, slippery edges and places a dog could become trapped.
  2. Introduce water gradually. Let the dog approach at its own pace and learn where it can stand or exit. Never push or throw a reluctant dog into water.
  3. Stay within reach or close supervision. Do not assume a pool, dock or familiar shoreline is safe because the dog has used it before.
  4. Use a properly fitted flotation device on boats. A life jacket supports a dog during a fall, fatigue or rough water; it is not a substitute for supervision.
  5. Discourage drinking. Pool chemicals, salt water and contaminated lake or river water can cause illness. Bring fresh drinking water instead.
  6. Rinse and dry after swimming. Remove chlorine or salt from the coat and paws, then dry thoroughly, including skin folds and ears.

Watch for fatigue, coughing, repeated swallowing, vomiting, weakness or unusual behavior after water activity. Remove the dog from the water and seek veterinary advice if signs develop.

Fireworks and summer noise

Fireworks can burn or traumatize a dog, and the noise can trigger panic, escape attempts, disorientation or getting lost. Keep dogs away from lit fireworks and from spent or unused devices, which may contain hazardous materials.

A safer fireworks plan

  • Before displays begin, place the dog in a quiet, sheltered, escape-proof indoor area.
  • Close windows and doors, secure gates and check identification details and microchip registration.
  • Use familiar bedding, background sound and enrichment that help the dog settle.
  • Do not take a dog to a fireworks display or leave it outside during neighborhood fireworks.
  • Ask your veterinarian in advance about a plan for a dog with severe noise anxiety; do not give medication unless it has been prescribed and explained for that dog.

If a dog escapes, search immediately and contact local shelters, animal control and nearby veterinary hospitals. A frightened dog may run farther and behave differently from normal.

Food, chemicals and plants that become hazards in summer

Warm-weather gatherings put tempting but dangerous items within reach. Keep alcoholic drinks, hazardous foods, fertilizers, insecticides, citronella products and potentially harmful plants inaccessible. Store lawn and garden chemicals in closed containers, clean spills promptly and keep dogs away from treated areas according to the product label and veterinary advice.

Do not wait for dramatic symptoms after suspected ingestion. Contact your veterinarian or ASPCA Animal Poison Control promptly, describe the substance, estimated amount, time of exposure and the dog’s weight, and keep the packaging or plant sample available. Do not induce vomiting or give a home remedy unless a veterinary professional specifically directs you to do so.

Match precautions to the situation

Situation Main danger Safer control
Dog left in a parked vehicle Rapid, uncontrolled heat buildup Leave the dog at home; never rely on shade, cracked windows or a short stop
Outdoor exercise in heat or humidity Overheating and heatstroke Use cooler hours, reduce intensity, provide water and shade, and take breaks
Walking on sun-heated pavement Paw-pad burns Choose grass or shade, shorten the walk and inspect paws afterward
Pool, lake or ocean access Drowning, exhaustion or harmful water ingestion Supervise continuously, introduce water gradually, provide fresh water and rinse after swimming
Boat trip Falling overboard or fatigue Use a fitted flotation device and maintain close supervision
Fireworks Burns, panic, escape and disorientation Use a quiet, sheltered, escape-proof indoor area and keep fireworks remnants away
Backyard or picnic area Toxic foods, drinks, chemicals or plants Secure hazardous items and contact a veterinarian promptly after suspected ingestion

A practical summer safety checklist

  • Fresh water is available wherever the dog spends time.
  • Shade or a cool indoor retreat is accessible, with no plan to leave the dog in a parked car.
  • Exercise is scheduled for cooler conditions and includes breaks.
  • Walking routes avoid hot pavement whenever possible.
  • A collapsible bowl and fresh water are packed for outings.
  • Pool and open-water access is supervised; a flotation device is ready for boat trips.
  • The dog is rinsed after chlorine or salt-water swimming.
  • Fireworks are secured, and the dog has an indoor refuge before displays start.
  • Alcohol, dangerous foods, lawn chemicals, insecticides, citronella products and unsafe plants are out of reach.
  • Your veterinarian’s contact information and the nearest emergency clinic are easy to find.

General guidance from the AVMA, Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and ASPCA cannot replace an examination. Dogs differ in health, breed, age and heat tolerance. When a dog has heatstroke signs, breathing trouble, collapse, seizures, repeated vomiting or another sudden serious change, contact an emergency veterinarian without delay.
