A dojo loach, weather loach or pond loach is usually Misgurnus anguillicaudatus, a freshwater bottom-dweller that buries itself and can become a substantial fish. Long-term success depends on planning for its adult size, providing a broad tank floor with soft substrate, keeping the water cool to moderate, and preventing escapes.

What is a dojo loach?
The common names dojo loach, weather loach and pond loach are used for Misgurnus anguillicaudatus. FishBase describes it as a demersal (bottom-associated) freshwater species. In nature it uses muddy bottoms in rivers, lakes, ponds, swamps and rice fields, rather than living as an open-water schooling fish.
FishBase records a maximum standard length of 28 cm. Standard length is the conventional fish-measuring method that ends at the base of the tail, so the total length of a large adult can appear greater. The practical message is the same: a fish sold as a small juvenile needs an adult-sized home planned from the beginning.

That history makes responsible disposal essential; an unwanted loach, its eggs or aquarium water must never be released into a natural waterway.
How much aquarium space does an adult need?
Plan around floor area, not just the number printed as a tank’s nominal volume. Seriously Fish’s profile for M. anguillicaudatus, revised in 2026, recommends a base of at least 120 × 45 cm for long-term care and gives an example volume of about 243 L (64 US gal). This is a specialist husbandry recommendation, not a universal legal standard, but it is a useful minimum planning point for an adult fish.
Why footprint matters
Dojo loaches spend much of their time on or under the bottom. A tall aquarium with a small base does not provide the same usable area as a longer, deeper model. Measure the internal floor space after accounting for trim and equipment, and leave room for a sand bed, hiding places and unobstructed swimming along the front.
Use the adult, not the shop size, as your test
Before purchase, check four conditions:
- The aquarium has at least the recommended 120 × 45 cm base or a larger footprint.
- The stand can safely support a filled aquarium, substrate and decor.
- Your filter, heater or cooling equipment can maintain stable conditions in that volume.
- You can cover the entire top and still access the tank for maintenance.
If the available aquarium is smaller, postponing the purchase is safer than relying on a temporary setup. A juvenile does not remain a nano-sized fish.
Temperature and water parameters
Seriously Fish recommends approximately 17.8–23.3°C (64–74°F) for general care. The profile lists pH 6.0–8.0 and hardness of 1–12 dGH, and notes that the species may tolerate roughly 5–25°C. Tolerance is not a target: continuous operation at the warm end, especially tropical temperatures above the recommended range, is discouraged.

The recommended range comes from a specialist aquarium profile rather than a controlled temperature trial. Use it as practical husbandry guidance, then monitor the fish and water quality. When changing water, match the replacement water’s temperature and chemistry as closely as possible to reduce shock.
Signs your temperature plan is wrong
- If the tank normally runs hotter than 23.3°C, reduce the heat gradually and improve room ventilation or cooling rather than making a sudden change.
- If the temperature drops toward the lower tolerance edge, check the thermometer against another instrument and prevent rapid fluctuations.
- If the room cannot stay in the recommended range, select equipment and a location that can before acquiring the fish.
Build a safe bottom-oriented aquascape
Choose sand or fine gravel
The loach buries itself. Use soft aquarium sand or fine, smooth gravel that allows digging without sharp edges. Coarse or jagged material can cause stress or injury and can interfere with the fish’s ability to search for food. Rinse new substrate according to its packaging, but do not use soaps or household cleaners.

Arrange rocks, wood and other heavy structures so they cannot collapse when the fish excavates beneath them. Place heavy decor directly on the aquarium base before adding the substrate, or otherwise support it so digging cannot undermine it. Leave shaded retreats and open bottom areas; the loach needs both cover and room to forage.
Keep the current moderate
Avoid a strong, continuous jet across the floor. Provide oxygenation and circulation, but direct the outlet toward the surface or a wall so the fish can rest without fighting the current. The Seriously Fish example suggests filter turnover of around four to five aquarium volumes per hour; treat that as an example for its setup, not a universal pump prescription. Actual sizing depends on aquarium volume, filter design and the other inhabitants.
Cover, intake protection and biological maturity
Fit a tight lid
Dojo loaches can jump, particularly when startled or when water conditions deteriorate. Use a tight-fitting cover with openings sealed or screened around cables and hoses. Check the lid after every maintenance session; a small gap can become an escape route.

Guard filter intakes
Protect every intake with an appropriate guard or sponge, especially when the aquarium contains small fish or juvenile loaches. The guard must not clog, so inspect it during routine maintenance and clean it in removed aquarium water when flow falls.
Wait for a mature aquarium

- Equalize conditions carefully. Match the transport water and aquarium temperature, then move the fish without adding unnecessary store water to the display.
- Offer immediate cover. Allow the loach to retreat and settle; digging or hiding is normal for a bottom-dwelling fish.
- Observe without constant disturbance. Check breathing, posture, ability to remain on the bottom and interest in sinking food.
- Maintain the environment. Test water regularly, perform consistent partial water changes appropriate to your system, keep the substrate free of decaying waste and inspect the intake guard and lid.

Choosing compatible tankmates
No direct species-versus-species comparison is established here, so compatibility should be assessed from the actual aquarium rather than from a ranked list of “best” companions. Do not assume a nearby pond is isolated; waterways connect, and a species that survives in ponds and rice fields can establish where conditions permit.

Digging causes injuries or collapsed decor
Replace abrasive substrate, secure heavy structures on the aquarium base and rebuild the layout so excavation cannot bring rocks down. Do not trap the fish under unstable ornaments.
