The March 13–21, 2025 Dominican Republic trip report from Birding Ecotours records 135 species: 132 seen and three heard only. The nine-day route moved from Santo Domingo to wetlands, coastal salt pans, lowland forest, the Sierra de Bahoruco mountains, and Lake Enriquillo, combining island endemics with migrants and widespread Caribbean birds.
This is a report of one guided group’s experience, not a national bird survey or a guarantee of what every departure will produce. Its most useful lessons are the breadth of habitat covered, the concentration of Hispaniola specialties, and the physical demands of early starts, long transfers, and a rough approach road to Zapotén.

The checklist is identified as following IOC taxonomy. Heard-only records are marked “(H),” while the report says its CE, EN, VU, and NT conservation-status marks follow BirdLife International categories. Those labels describe the categories used in the checklist; the narrative does not provide an independently audited population study or a quantified trend for any species.

The total is best read as a trip-list result: what this group recorded during this itinerary and these field conditions. It is not a measure of all birds in the Dominican Republic, and it should not be treated as a guaranteed total for a future tour.

Why this itinerary produces a varied list
The route’s strength is habitat contrast rather than a single famous hotspot. Garden habitat around the capital supplied familiar urban and woodland birds. Los Haitises added lowland forest and wetland species. Salinas de Baní offered open, salty shorebird habitat. The southern coast, Cachote, and the Sierra de Bahoruco then shifted the search into mountain environments before the group finished around a saline lake and Barahona.
Moving through those settings matters on an island where elevation and vegetation change quickly. A birder can seek waterbirds at one stop, forest endemics at the next, and montane specialists after a long transfer. The report therefore reads as a circuit designed to sample several ecological zones, not as repeated visits to one locality.

Santo Domingo’s National Botanical Garden
The group began in the National Botanical Garden with several emblematic Hispaniolan birds. Palmchat, the island’s distinctive endemic, appeared alongside Antillean Palm Swift, Hispaniolan Parakeet, Hispaniolan Woodpecker, hummingbirds, and West Indian Whistling Duck. Starting in a city garden gave the tour an immediate introduction to endemic and Caribbean birdlife without waiting for the mountain legs of the itinerary.
Because the report is a narrative of one visit, it does not state how common each of these birds was, how many individuals were present, or whether the same mix occurs on every visit. The value of the record is that it shows what the group encountered at this particular stop.

- An ideal choice magnification: A 10x magnification strikes the balance between zooming in on your target and maintaining a steady image, making it an ideal choice for everyday use.
- Equipped with Bak-4 prisms: These prisms deliver images with 3D depth and rich detail. Even under low-light conditions, you’ll still enjoy bright, sharp views.
- Compact design: About the size of your palm and weighing only 0.6 pounds - makes it easy to carry around wherever you go. With these features, your binoculars become a reliable companion for everyday adventures rather than a tool reserved only for special occasions.

Wherever your imagination takes you, Hontry binoculars are ready to follow.
Los Haitises National Park
The headline sighting at Los Haitises was a Ridgway’s Hawk rising above the forest. The report says the group waited with help from a local contact before the hawk came into view. That detail is important: the encounter depended on time, positioning, and local knowledge rather than a guaranteed roadside sighting.
Other observations there included Broad-billed Tody, Antillean Piculet, White-necked Crow, and several waterbirds. Together they show why the park served two purposes on the route: forest birding and wetland watching. The narrative does not attach a count or frequency to any of these species.

At Salinas de Baní, the group changed emphasis to shorebirds and waterbirds. Snowy Plover, Stilt Sandpiper, White-cheeked Pintail, and American Flamingo are specifically named in the report. Salt-pan habitat can make distant or low birds difficult to identify, so this part of the trip complemented the forest work at Los Haitises and later in Bahoruco.
The report does not provide tide times, water levels, or a site-specific viewing schedule. Those variables can affect what is visible, which is another reason to treat the checklist as a record of this tour rather than a fixed promise.
Cachote and the mountain transition
Cachote introduced montane birding before the route reached the higher Sierra de Bahoruco sites. The report highlights Eastern Chat-Tanager and Hispaniolan Euphonia there. These observations demonstrate the practical value of including more than one mountain stop: habitat and elevation changes can reveal different specialists even within the same broad range.

Zapotén and Rabo de Gato in the Sierra de Bahoruco
The Sierra de Bahoruco section delivered several of the report’s most difficult targets. Near an Antillean Siskin, the group encountered Hispaniolan Crossbill. At Zapotén, the narrative highlights La Selle Thrush, White-winged Warbler, Hispaniolan Trogon, and Golden Swallow.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Zapotén also illustrates the trip’s physical reality. The approach road was described as rough, and reaching the site involved the kind of transfer and field effort that should be discussed before booking a mountain-focused itinerary. The report does not specify a vehicle model, road length, or journey time, so those details should be confirmed with the operator for a particular departure rather than inferred from this account.
Lake Enriquillo and Barahona
The final field section covered Lake Enriquillo and Barahona. The report describes birding around the saline lake and records a Sabine’s Gull at Barahona. These stops broadened the route again, taking it from mountain forest back to saline and coastal environments before the return to Santo Domingo.
Endemic and distinctive birds to understand before going
Hispaniola’s endemic birds are the central reason this route is more than a general Caribbean birding holiday. The report specifically features Palmchat, Hispaniolan Parakeet, Hispaniolan Woodpecker, Hispaniolan Crossbill, Hispaniolan Trogon, Hispaniolan Euphonia, Broad-billed Tody, and other island specialties.
Several targets are tied to particular parts of the route. Palmchat, parakeets, and woodpeckers appeared at the botanical garden. Broad-billed Tody and Antillean Piculet were reported at Los Haitises. Hispaniolan Euphonia and Eastern Chat-Tanager were associated with Cachote, while Crossbill, La Selle Thrush, Trogon, and Golden Swallow were among the Bahoruco highlights. Treating these as site-linked objectives helps a traveler understand why the itinerary includes long transfers instead of staying near Santo Domingo.

The report also records birds that make the trip valuable beyond endemics: shorebirds at Baní, waterbirds at Los Haitises, American Flamingo, West Indian Whistling Duck, a Sabine’s Gull, and other species described in the checklist. It is the combination of island specialties and habitat-driven variety that gives the route its character.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Time, transport, and field conditions
The account repeatedly emphasizes very early departures and substantial transfers. This is not a relaxed, single-base garden tour. Participants should expect mornings organized around reaching a site at a productive time, followed by drives between widely separated regions.
The rough road to Zapotén is the clearest caution. Anyone with mobility, motion-sickness, or vehicle-comfort concerns should ask the operator about current road conditions, vehicle arrangements, estimated travel times, and alternatives before departure. The March 2025 conditions belong to that trip; roads, access rules, accommodations, and guides can change.
Local guides and site contacts were important in the report, especially for waiting at Los Haitises for Ridgway’s Hawk. Their contribution illustrates why a guided itinerary can be useful in unfamiliar terrain, but it does not mean a particular guide, contact, or sighting will be available on a later departure.

How to use the checklist without overinterpreting it
- Separate seen from heard. The report’s headline total includes 132 birds seen and three heard only. Heard-only records are marked “(H)” in the checklist.
- Keep the date attached to the number. The total belongs to March 13–21, 2025, under this group’s route and conditions.
- Read status marks as categories, not population measurements. The report says its CE, EN, VU, and NT designations follow BirdLife International, but it does not present a new census or numerical trend.
- Do not turn a trip total into a national total. The Dominican Republic supports more birdlife than any one itinerary can record, and the report did not attempt a complete inventory.
- Expect variation. Weather, access, timing, local conditions, and guide decisions can alter which sites are visited and which birds are detected.
Practical preparation for a similar birding trip
Set expectations about effort
Plan for early starts, long days, and transfers. The route covers Santo Domingo, the northeast, the southwest, mountain sites, a saline lake, and the coast. Comfortable clothing, hydration, sun protection, and patience for vehicle time are sensible basics, while the exact packing list should come from the operator’s current instructions.

Bring observation essentials
“Birding binoculars” is the appropriate general category for watching birds across gardens, wetlands, salt pans, forest, and open coast. The report does not name, test, or recommend a binocular model, so choose equipment based on your own fit, weight, optical needs, and budget rather than attributing a product choice to this group.
Prepare for changing access
Ask for the current itinerary, road notes, accommodation plan, and meeting times. The operator’s related tour description characterizes the program as a nine-day guided itinerary and says the schedule is a rough guide subject to changes caused by accommodation, roads, sites, guides, and other conditions. Those terms make confirmation before departure especially important for Zapotén and any other remote stop.
Use target lists intelligently
Prioritize the birds the report associates with each habitat, but keep the list flexible. Ridgway’s Hawk required a wait at Los Haitises; montane targets such as Crossbill, La Selle Thrush, Trogon, and Golden Swallow were linked to Sierra de Bahoruco sites; shorebirds and flamingos were tied to Baní. A target list is most useful as a way to focus attention, not as a promise of sightings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat this report can—and cannot—tell a future traveler
It can show the scope of a Dominican Republic birding circuit, the kinds of habitat reached in nine days, and the practical demands reported by one group. It can also identify a set of realistic objectives: island endemics, Ridgway’s Hawk, montane specialties, shorebirds, and coastal or saline-lake birds.
It cannot guarantee the same species total, reproduce the same road conditions, establish national abundance, or validate every conservation category independently. Future departures may change route order, sites, guides, accommodations, or access. Read the March 2025 narrative as a detailed example of one successful trip, then obtain current logistics before relying on it for booking or packing decisions.
Bottom line from the March 2025 account
Birding Ecotours’ Dominican Republic report presents a demanding but habitat-rich circuit. The route’s appeal lies in moving from city gardens and wetlands to coastal salt pans, lowland forest, high mountains, and a saline lake while pursuing Hispaniola’s distinctive birds. The principal trade-off is effort: very early departures, long transfers, and a rough road to Zapotén are part of the experience described.
In the author’s closing words, Luis Gles wrote: “We truly enjoyed this successful Birding Ecotours tour in the Dominican Republic.” That assessment belongs to the March 2025 group; future travelers should use it as context, not as a guarantee.
